F2 Car Lands Upside Down in Rollover Accident at Austrian Sprint Race

There were the usual scrapes and skirmishes in Formula 2—one car even ended up upside down in the Sprint Race—and consequently cars needed recovering post-race. However, one of the recovery vehicles misjudged its height and struck a temporary advertising bridge on Sunday that was over the circuit exiting the first corner. The scary event came on the second lap at the Red Bull Ring in Austria. Sami Meguetounif of the Trident team attempted an inside move on Red Bull's Arvid Lindblad in Turn 3. The two made contact, and Meguetounif went flying over the top of Williams' Luke Browning. Meguetounif's car finished the chain of events upside down. The advertising bridge came crashing down, though fortunately no one was injured, and officials set about properly deconstructing it and removing it in double-quick time. The Porsche Supercup race was slightly delayed, but there was no impact on Formula 1's schedule.

Watch: Halo saves drivers' lives in terrifying F2 crash

A spectacular crash in the F2 sprint race delayed the start of qualifying for Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, with two Britons caught up in an accident which left one car upside-down on top of another. Thankfully, all three of Sami Meguetounif, Luke Browning and Red Bull junior driver Arvid Lindblad - hotly-tipped for an F1 seat in the near future - were able to walk away unhurt from the incident, which occurred on the second lap of the sprint race. But Browning probably had the halo safety device to thank for saving him from serious injury after Meguetounif flew over the top of both his and Lindblad's car and came to rest on his. The 23 year-old Williams academy driver, who drives for Hitech, had been battling Campos' Lindblad for 13th place when Trident's Meguetounif dived up the inside on the approach to T3. Lindblad, 17, who was recently granted an FIA Super License, allowing him to compete in Formula 1 despite being under the minimum age of 18, did not see the Trident driver and turned in. 'The guy came out of nowhere,' Lindblad said afterwards on the radio. 'I had no idea he was there.' Meguetounif, 21, was pitched into a roll and then flipped over, ending upside down on top of Browning's car. Unsurprisingly, the incident triggered red flags. 'I think he'll look back at that as one of the more optimistic moves he's made,' was the verdict of racing driver and commentator Alex Brundle on the passing attempt from Meguetounif. After a 30-minute delay, stewards got the race back underway under a rolling restart led by Joshua Durksen. But an already messy race got messier still after Dino Beganovic was left stranded following contact with Oliver Goethe, also at Turn 3. There was then a final lap incident at the same corner when fourth placed Amaury Cordeel spun, causing the three drivers behind him to run into him.

Terrifying F2 crash sends car flipping over drivers at Red Bull Ring

A chaotic three-car crash during an F2 sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix left one drive upside down after going airborne and flipping over two competitors. No drivers were injured and the race was immediately red flagged. Advertisement The incident occurred on Lap 2 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria as Trident's Sami Meguetounif tried to make an inside move on Red Bull's Arvid Lindblad in Turn 3. Meguetounif and Lindblad made contact, sending the former's car soaring over the top of Williams' Luke Browning in a terrifying scene before Meguetounif's car came to rest upside down on the track. On radio, Meguetounif was heard explaining to his team that he got squeezed on underbreaking, which closed the gap he hoped to exploit. Thankfully everyone ended up OK and all the safety procedures in place worked as planned. What an absolute scene in Austria. Arvid Lindblad will make F1 debut with practice session at British Grand Prix, could replace Max Verstappen

Image credit: Arvid Lindblad/Instagram Arvid Lindblad, the promising Red Bull Junior Team driver, is all set to make his Formula 1 debut during the free practice session at the British Grand Prix. Lindblad, who is of Swedish and Indian descent, is being considered as a potential replacement for none other than Max Verstappen — should the reigning F1 champion receive a race ban, from which he is just one penalty point away. This possibility has been confirmed by Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko. Helmut Marko praises Arvid Lindblad ahead of F1 debut The 17-year-old Lindblad has already proven his potential in Formula 2, becoming the youngest driver in F2 history to win a race after claiming victory in the Sprint Race at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. If he gets the chance to compete at the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit, he could achieve a similar milestone in Formula 1. Confirming the development, Dr. Helmut Marko told Austrian outlet Kleine Zeitung, 'He spent half a day in the car in Italy on Monday to prepare himself. And he will also be in the car for Friday practice at Silverstone. He is characterised by his mental strength and self-confidence.' Marko added, 'We are preparing ourselves in case something really happens with Max Verstappen in terms of his penalty points. We currently have two replacement drivers: Lindblad and Ayumu Iwasa, whose Formula 1 commitments overlap with his commitments in Japan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [Click Here] 2025 Best Luxury Hotel Prices Expertinspector Learn More For some races, we even had a deal with another team, and once a substitute driver was even scheduled for three teams. It is not so easy to find someone who is in good shape. And that's why Lindblad is now in the car.' Lindblad has been granted an F1 super licence by the FIA under a special exemption. He is also excelling in Formula 3, having already secured multiple wins. Notably, he trained under leading Formula E champion Oliver Rowland, who runs a karting school. Why Arvid Lindblad may have to replace Max Verstappen at British Grand Prix Meanwhile, Red Bull star Max Verstappen remains under scrutiny for his growing penalty points tally, particularly after his collision with Mercedes driver George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix. Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy Dates Confirmed

The new look format – with the championship's regular 15 races being run over four weekends instead of five – was signed off by the FIA's World Council of Motorsport recently. The championship trail will begin over the weekend of January 9-11 at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park and a week later heads further south for Round 2 at the Taupo International Motorsport Park January 16-18 as part of the Historic GP weekend at the circuit. The first two rounds in New Zealand's North Island will then be followed by two rounds in the South Island with Round 3 at Teretonga Raceway just outside of Invercargill January 23-25 and the final weekend the 70th New Zealand Grand Prix meeting, to be staged for the third successive year at the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell over the weekend of January 30-February 1st. Formats for each weekend are set to be confirmed but it is likely that the extensive mileage available to drivers taking part in the New Zealand series will remain, and therefore allowing it to retain its global appeal as the best winter training ground for serious northern hemisphere single seater prospects. 2025 championship winner Arvid Lindblad is already being touted for a seat this season in Formula One. From 2026, the FIA will introduce a Regional Trophy concept for all Formula Regional and Formula 4 categories. These new formats provide organisers and promoters with unprecedented flexibility to choose between a traditional championship format lasting over a longer period or concentrating their competitions – under the 'Trophy' title - within a shorter timeframe with fewer events. This is the framework adopted for New Zealand's premier single seater championship. 2026 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy
