Watch out for route diversions during Tazia procession

Indore: In view of the Muharram procession scheduled for Sunday, the city traffic police have issued a diversion plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety. The procession will begin at 2pm from Imambada and proceed through Subhash Chowk, Rajwada, Yeshwant Road, Macchi Bazaar, Pandrinath, Harsiddhi, Moti Tabela, and Collectorate Square before culminating at Karbala Maidan. DCP Arvind Tiwari said a heavy crowd presence is anticipated along the route and at Karbala Maidan, prompting authorities to implement traffic diversions for heavy, four-wheeler, and two-wheeler vehicles. As per the plan, heavy vehicles like trucks and transport carriers will not be allowed through central city routes and must instead travel via Transport Nagar, Choithram Mandi Square, Rajendra Nagar Bridge, and Narmada Nagar Square to access Ring Road. Public transport and other four-wheelers heading from Bhanwarkuan or Tower area towards Mhow Naka will be rerouted via Tower, Palsikar, Manikbagh Bridge, Rajiv Gandhi Square, and further through Rajendra Nagar, Utsav Hotel, Gopur, and Foothi Kothi. Likewise, heavy vehicles traveling from Gangwal or Mhow Naka towards Transport Nagar will need to take the Chandan Nagar, Foothi Kothi, and Rajiv Gandhi Square route. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Once all Tazias have entered Karbala Maidan, depending on the traffic pressure, private vehicles heading towards Mhow Naka may be directed via Hemu Colony, Harsiddhi, Macchi Bazaar, Yeshwant Road, and Rajmohalla. Additionally, vehicles from Annapurna Road or Foothi Kothi going towards Yeshwant Road will be diverted through Mhow Naka, Gangwal Square, Bada Ganpati Square, and Subhash Marg. For vehicles traveling from Bhanwarkuan or Tower area to Mhow Naka, an alternative route via RTO Road and Kesarbagh railway crossing through Choithram has been suggested. Post 11am, city buses will not be permitted to operate on Rajwada and Jawahar Marg. Buses intending to approach Jawahar Marg must use Mrignayani and Subhash Marg for movement.

Dedicated Corridor of Confusion

Indore: Despite a High Court order to dismantle Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor and convert it into a common lane, most private vehicle owners are still hesitant to use it, fearing traffic fines. Amidst videos being circulated on social media about police slapping fines on vehicles entering the now defunct BRTS lane, authorities say that traffic police were indeed stopping private vehicles attempting to use the 'dedicated lane' only to ask them to avoid it. They clarified that there was no official ban on the use of BRTS corridor but traffic violations committed while using it can still attract fines. The High Court had in Feb ordered dismantling of BRTS corridor, a decision welcomed by Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), Mayor, and local public representatives. Within days of the order, IMC began removing railings along approximately half a kilometre of the 11.5 km corridor, from GPO Square towards Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. IMC has yet to award a contract for complete dismantling of the corridor, which includes removal of remaining railings, concrete plinths, and bus stops. Currently, Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited (AICTSL) continues to operate its I-buses on BRTS corridor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Simultaneously, traffic police, assisted by volunteers, are preventing private vehicles from using this 'dedicated lane' without any explicit official order. DCP (Traffic) Arvind Tiwari clarified the situation: "We are not slapping fines on private vehicles specifically for using BRTS corridor, but for violations like jumping signals or rash driving." He said that the traffic signals for mixed-use lanes and BRTS corridor operate differently, leading to violations by private vehicles when attempting to enter or exit the dedicated lane. The senior official further asserted that there was no way for a private vehicle to enter or exit BRTS corridor without violating traffic signals. "At present, the BRTS corridor has no legal status as the court has already ordered its dismantling, while the dedicated lane was never officially notified, so it cannot be de-notified," Kishore Kodwani, one of the petitioners in the case that led to scrapping of BRTS, said. He added that no commuter can be issued a challan for driving a private vehicle through the corridor unless there was a specific order from a competent authority, like Collector, under Section 163 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS). Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava concurred with Kodwani's assessment. He acknowledged that while there was no explicit order prohibiting private vehicles from using BRTS corridor, people are currently 'discouraged' from doing so due to concerns about rash driving and other safety issues. "Following the court order, we have invited tenders to dismantle the corridor and construct the median lane (divider). The tender for the median lane construction has been awarded, and the second tender is expected to be awarded soon," Bhargava said. Collector Asheesh Singh could not be contacted for his comments on the issue.

13k challans issued in a month for traffic violations

Indore: Under the traffic awareness campaign underway in the city for the past month, a total of 13,054 challans were issued for various traffic rule violations. DCP Arvind Tiwari said that between March 27 and April 21, a comprehensive traffic awareness campaign was launched, aiming to ensure smoother, safer, and more pleasant travel for city residents. As part of this effort, officers regularly visited various intersections, providing daily instructions to on-duty personnel to improve traffic regulation. In the past few weeks, a total of 13,054 challans were issued. These include 3,490 cases of vehicles with either no number plates or stylized ones, 199 for using modified silencers, 40 for unauthorized use of sirens, 817 for wrong-side driving, 521 for triple riding on two-wheelers, 1,492 for red-light violations, and 717 for vehicles with black films on their windows. Additionally, 6 challans were issued for unauthorized emergency lights, and 5,459 for violations under other sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. During the campaign, traffic police used microphones at intersections to make public announcements, urging drivers to follow traffic rules. Volunteers, referred to as "traffic management friends," were also seen assisting on the roads. Many citizens responded positively to the campaign, adhering to the rules more responsibly. The DCP said that they also acknowledged compliant drivers with tokens of appreciation such as flowers and chocolates, encouraging a culture of road safety . The traffic police also focused on vehicles with illegal black films on their windows. This practice, which goes against the Motor Vehicles Act and Supreme Court directives, led to 535 additional challans being issued. Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from applying any such films and to strictly adhere to traffic rules for everyone's safety.
