BJP protests over sanitation worker recruitment turn violent at Thiruvananthapuram corporation office
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation office on Wednesday witnessed multiple protests by the BJP over the alleged irregularities and corruption in the recruitment of sanitation workers. The situation turned tense when the party dharna in front of the mayor's office turned violent. Mayor Arya Rajendran released a statement accusing BJP councillors of attempting to disrupt a crucial meeting to review preparations for Karkidaka vavu bali. Deputy mayor P K Raju, who demanded that the review meeting be held without interference, was allegedly manhandled by BJP members. He filed a formal complaint with Museum Police. However, BJP refuted the allegations. 'We were peacefully protesting in front of the mayor's office and the review meeting was held without any disturbance. They are raising baseless allegations to cover the corruption. The deputy mayor tried to provoke us and his complaint is baseless,' said M R Gopan, BJP parliamentary party leader. The march of the Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of the BJP, to the corporation office also turned violent. Around 12:30pm, the protesters reached the corporation premises, where police had set up barricades. However, protesters toppled the barricades, which forced the police to use water cannons. BJP has announced another protest march to the corporation office on Thursday.

Who Is Arya Rajendran, India's Youngest Mayor, Cited By NYC's Mamdani In Now-Viral Post?
Last Updated: Mamdani's 2020 post about CPI(M) leader Arya Rajendran, who became India's youngest mayor at the time, became viral after he won the race for New York Mayor. Zohran Mamdani, 33, stunned political circles in the United States by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as well as the Democratic establishment to win the party's primary for mayor – in what is being described as a political earthquake in the US. However, his victory put the spotlight on Kerala politician, Arya Rajendran. Mamdani, the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, is on course to become the first Muslim Mayor of New York. His campaign focused on everyday economic issues like housing, transportation, child care and food prices. Mamdani attracted the scorn of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) base over his socialist rhetoric and religion. US President Donald Trump slammed his victory, calling him a '100% Communist Rhetoric". Mamdani's views on Israel – whom he has accused of committing a 'genocide' in Gaza – did not sit well with Republicans and some Democrats. Who Is Arya Rajendran? However, attention has turned to Mamdani's 2020 post on CPI(M) leader Arya Rajendran, who at the time became the youngest Mayor in the country and took charge of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Rajendran is a prominent leader from Kerala's Nair community who created history by becoming the youngest mayor anywhere in the world in 2020 at the age of 21, breaking the records of Sabitha Beegum becoming Kollam mayor at 23 and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis becoming Nagpur mayor at 27. In the 2020 civic elections, Rajendran won from Mudavanmugal ward in the city, defeating her nearest Congress rival by a margin of 549 votes. The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front bagged 51 seats, BJP 34, UDF ten seats and others five in the election. She is married to CPI(M) MLA Sachin Dev. In 2023, Rajendran made headlines after a photo of her working from her office with her one-month-old baby went viral. She was inducted into the CPI(M)'s Thiruvananthapuram District Committee in 2024. Why Is Mamdani's Post Going Viral? Mamdani had then retweeted a post from the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s Puducherry committee congratulating Rajendran for her achievement, writing 'them: so what kind of mayor does nyc need right now? me:" them: so what kind of mayor does nyc need right now?me: — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) December 27, 2020 This post showing his early political ambitions is being highlighted now to claim that Mamdani is a communist. 'Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think Arya Rajendran would be a matter of discussion in the New York mayoral election," a user wrote on X. Several right-wing politicians and influencers also branded him as a 'communist", claiming he will destroy New York with his liberal and progressive agenda. Mamdani has also been criticised for his views on India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. First Published: June 27, 2025, 08:18 IST

Who Is Arya Rajendran? India's 'Youngest Mayor' Praised By Zohran Mamdani
When Zohran Mamdani, the son of filmmaker Mira Nair, won the Democratic primary in the race to become New York City's next mayor, one of his old posts resurfaced online. In a 2020 post on X (then Twitter), Mamdani referred to Arya Rajendran, a young Indian politician from Kerala, as the kind of leader New York might need. But who is Arya Rajendran? And why did Mamdani choose to spotlight her? Back in December 2020, Zohran Mamdani shared a post originally published by CPI(M) Puducherry, highlighting Arya Rajendran's historic election as Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram at just 21. The post read, "Comrade Arya Rajendran, age 21 new Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram , Kerala. She will be the youngest mayor of a major city in the world." Mamdani amplified the message, writing, "So what kind of mayor does NYC need right now?" - suggesting a bold, youthful and ideologically committed leader like Rajendran could be the answer. them: so what kind of mayor does nyc need right now? me: — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) December 27, 2020 As Zohran Mamdani prepares for the final leg of the mayoral race in November, his old post is gaining renewed attention. Who is Arya Rajendran? Born in 1999, Arya Rajendran made headlines in 2020 when she became the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. In doing so, set a national record as India's youngest mayor. She overtook the previous record held by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who headed Nagpur's civic body at the age of 27. Representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Rajendran was elected from the Mudavanmugal ward in the 2020 Kerala local body elections. She is a graduate in mathematics. Her early entry into politics was marked by joining Balasangham, the children's wing of the CPI(M), when she was in fifth standard. She would go on to lead the organisation as its state president. She also served in the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and became a CPI(M) area committee member in Chala, Thiruvananthapuram. In 2023, Rajendran captured national attention when a photograph of her working in her office with her one-month-old baby went viral. She is married to Sachin Dev, also a CPI(M) leader, and the youngest member of Kerala's current Legislative Assembly. In 2024, she was inducted into the CPI(M)'s Thiruvananthapuram District Committee. As mayor, Rajendran prioritised waste management and healthcare. She also launched scientific disposal drives and pushed for 24/7 health centres for the marginalised.
