Russia's Sergei Lavrov arrives in Malaysia for Asean meetings, to join regional talks with key global powers
SUBANG JAYA, July 10 — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived here today to attend high-level talks in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) here, hosted by Malaysia under its 2025 Asean Chairmanship. Lavrov is leading the Russian delegation to the regional gathering, which is taking place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from July 8 to 11. The delegation landed at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base at 8.27am and was welcomed by Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Special Functions Datuk Syed Mohamad Bakri Syed Abd Rahman and Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov. Lavrov is scheduled to participate in the Asean-Russia Post-Ministerial Conference and the Asean Regional Forum (ARF), alongside other key Dialogue Partners. Lavrov is also expected to hold bilateral talks with several of his counterparts on the sidelines of the meetings. Russia established relations with Asean in 1991 and became a full-fledged Dialogue Partner in 1996. In 2018, both sides elevated the relationship to a Strategic Partnership. Meanwhile, the Turkish and Swiss Foreign Ministers, Hakan Fidan and Ignazio Daniele Giovanni Cassis, arrived early this morning to also attend high-level talks held in conjunction with the AMM. Both countries are Asean Sectoral Dialogue Partners. The aircraft carrying Fidan landed at the Bunga Raya Complex at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 2.30am, while the aircraft carrying Cassis and his wife, Paola Rodoni Cassis, landed at 12.44am. Also arriving this morning was Sri Lanka's Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, who landed at the Bunga Raya Complex at KLIA with his delegation at 6.31am. The 58th AMM and related meetings, which began on Tuesday, are being held under Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship for 2025 with the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. More than 1,500 delegates from Asean and its external partners are participating in 24 ministerial-level meetings over four days. — Bernama

Diplomatic delegations arrive in KL for Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting under Malaysia's 2025 chairmanship
SEPANG, July 7 — Diplomatic delegations have begun arriving in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, which will be held from July 8 to 11. Among the early arrivals was Laos Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Phongsavanh Sisoulath, who landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 8.05pm on Sunday. Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative Kyaw Nyun Oo and Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Eksiri Pintaruchi were also among those who arrived. Senior officials from several Asean countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei and Indonesia, also touched down on Sunday. The 58th AMM and related meetings, to be held under Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including sessions with Asean Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners. The event is expected to gather about 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from Asean member states, Timor-Leste, Asean Dialogue Partners, Asean Regional Forum (ARF) participating countries, Sectoral Dialogue Partners and senior officials from the Asean Secretariat. Malaysia is hosting the AMM as part of its fifth Asean Chairmanship, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. — Bernama

Major Klang Valley roads to be rerouted in stages for Asean meeting from July 8 to 11
KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Traffic on three highways and 15 main roads in the Klang Valley will be diverted in stages from 8 to 11 July in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Yusri Hassan Basri said the affected routes comprised roads into and out of the federal capital, as well as routes to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and hotels where delegates will be staying. He said a dry run for the motorcade, covering routes from the airport to the respective hotels in Kuala Lumpur and the KLCC, would be conducted from today until Sunday involving 391 JSPT personnel. 'Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance and are encouraged to use public transport in support of the event. 'Commercial and heavy vehicles are advised not to enter the city centre during the road diversion period, particularly during peak hours, to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of breakdowns and accidents,' he said in a statement here today. Traffic disruptions in KL from July 5 as roads near KLCC to face closures for Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Traffic flow in several locations in Kuala Lumpur are expected to face disruptions during the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (58th AMM) scheduled to take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11. The Asean Main Logistics Secretariat, Foreign Ministry said that traffic disruptions are expected to begin as early as this Friday within a one-kilometre (km) radius from the KLCC area and along major roads and highways connecting main entry points to the city. 'Additional information on affected routes and the closure of certain roads will be announced by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) soon. 'The Foreign Ministry apologises for all the inconvenience that might be caused and deeply appreciates the understanding and cooperation of the public,' the secretariat said in a statement today. As host to an important regional event, the secretariat said that the Foreign Ministry is committed to ensure the smooth and successful organising of the event without neglecting the public's welfare. Malaysia took over the Asean chair on Jan 1 this year from Laos and it is the fifth time that the country is serving as Asean Chair, with its previous terms being 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. — Bernama

Anwar: Malaysia seeks Asean-US meeting in 'spirit of centrality'
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, as Asean chair, has written to United States President Donald Trump to organise an Asean-US meeting in the spirit of centrality. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this follows the consensus achieved by the Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Langkawi earlier this year. "Following this, I have taken the liberty to write to Trump, seeking understanding to organise an Asean-US meeting. "This means that we observe our centrality spirit seriously. It does not only speak to our aspirations but our obligations," he said in his opening remarks at the Plenary Session of the 46th Asean Summit. Yesterday, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had said Asean is waiting for confirmation from the US on the date for the Asean-US Special Summit.
