Bay County foundations launch scholarship program for aspiring STEM students
PANAMA CITY ― The Gulf Coast State College Foundation has partnered with STEM Origins to launch a "Rising Star" scholarship program for Aspiring STEM Students. According to a news release, the Rising Star scholarship is aimed at inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators in Bay County. The scholarship was originally designed to support only three students. Early fundraising allowed the STEM Origins Foundation to expand the inaugural year of the Rising Stars program to benefit 10 students from 10 different elementary schools across the district. 'This partnership isn't just about dollars — it's about building dreams and lighting a long-term path for students who show curiosity and aptitude in STEM,' Ashlin Glatthar, executive director of the GCSC Foundation, said in the release. 'By giving students something to aim for early on, we're changing what's possible in their futures." Students are selected based on their merit, including demonstrated curiosity, aptitude and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and math. Students are also selected based upon their collaborations and work ethic. The STEM Origins Foundation and the GCSC Foundation aim to support 20 students annually, representing one from each elementary school in the Bay District. 'This is an investment in our children and in our country's future STEM talent pipeline,' Mark Bradshaw, president of the STEM Origins Foundation, said in the release. 'If we want to lead in innovation, we have to start here by making STEM education tangible and exciting from an early age.' Gulf Coast State College Foundation receives $80K grant
PANAMA CITY — The Gulf Coast State College Foundation has received an $80,000 grant from the Edward K. Roberts Community College Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. According to a press release, the grant will provide support to students in GCSC's TRIO program, which helps low-income, first-generation and disabled students. 'Gulf Coast State College's TRIO program provides comprehensive support to eligible students across Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties,' the release says. 'The program's mission is to motivate and empower students to successfully complete a college credential or degree.' The Gulf Coast State College Foundation was founded more than 55 years ago. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit aims to increase access to higher education. Since 2011, the foundation has been awarded $670,000 from the Edward K. Roberts Community College Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. The donations have supported nearly 600 GCSC students through scholarships and programming. Roberts Community College Fund of the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. According to a news release, this award will provide essential support to students served by GCSC's TRiO program, an initiative that empowers low-income, first-generation and disabled students to succeed in higher education. The GCSC Foundation has awarded $670,000 from this fund since 2011. The gifts have supported almost 600 students through direct scholarship and essential programming across campus, including TRiO, the Career Center and Veterans Affairs. 'We are honored to be entrusted with these funds to support the educational journeys of students whose paths to college haven't always been easy,' said Ashlin Glatthar, Executive Director of the GCSC Foundation.
