Varanasi at 17th position in nat'l cleanliness rankings

Varanasi: Among all 4,589 bodies across the country, Varanasi Municipal Corporation retained its 17th position in rankings announced by ministry of urban affairs for the 2024 cleanliness survey, on Thursday. This is the highest ranking achieved since the cleanliness survey began in 2016. However, the city slipped to second from first position in the Ganga Town category, following Prayagraj. Kanpur secured the 3rd rank in this category. In the 2024 cleanliness survey, Varanasi's city card issued by Govt of India scored 98% in door-to-door waste collection, 63% in waste segregation at source, 100% in waste collection and disposal, 100% in disposal of waste at dumping grounds, 100% in cleanliness in residential areas and markets, 100% in cleanliness of water bodies and 93% in cleanliness of public and community toilets. Meanwhile, Varanasi secured second position in the Clean Ganga Town category, with Prayagraj securing first position. This year's cleanliness survey was conducted in two phases based on performance of the cities. Varanasi Municipal Corporation passes order to shut meat shops during month of Sawan

The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has passed a resolution to close all meat shops within the municipal limits during the holy Hindu month of Sawan, which began on Friday. The proposal was put forward by one of the 12 executive members during a meeting held on Friday. 'Taking into account several factors, including the large influx of Kanwariyas in Varanasi during the month of Sawan, a resolution was passed to ban the sale of meat within the municipal limits, which span around 183 square miles,' Varanasi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari said. It is estimated that around 1-1.5 lakh people visit Varanasi daily, but during the month of Sawan, the number of devotees increases to nearly four to five lakh per month, primarily due to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Teams were dispatched on Saturday morning to enforce the order to close all meat shops. Tiwari added that instructions have been issued to the authorities concerned to take necessary action, and strict legal measures will be taken against shopkeepers found violating the order. The municipal corporation's executive committee meeting was held on Friday. Several government officials were also present. Tiwari said that during the meeting, executive member Hanuman Prasad proposed a ban on meat and fish shops within the municipal limits for the month of Sawan. The proposal was passed unanimously, keeping in mind that Varanasi, as a religious city, attracts visitors with spiritual sentiments, and the aim is to ensure they leave with the same positive feelings, Tiwari said. When contacted, Varanasi Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Santosh Pal, said that as per the directive, the process of closing all meat and fish shops in the district has begun. 'Teams have been deployed to ensure complete closure of meat shops. This order does not apply to restaurants serving non-vegetarian food,' he said. He added that there are around 350 meat shops within the city's municipal limits, and all of them were operating without licences from the municipal corporation. Last year, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation had passed a resolution banning the operation of shops within a two-kilometre radius of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Despite the directive, some shops remained open, prompting the corporation to issue notices for violations. Shop owners, however, alleged harassment, claiming they were asked to shut down without any alternative arrangements. Most of the meat shops are located in areas such as Nai Sadak, Beniabagh, Sheikh Salim Phatak, and other neighbourhoods.

Varanasi: Kashi Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari recently inaugurated the third Smart Waste Management Transfer Station , constructed on approximately 15,000 square feet of land near the boundary of Jalkal at Shankuldhara Kund. It is the third such station in the state after Ghaziabad and Gorakhpur. With the collaboration of HDFC Bank under its CSR initiative, a plant with a capacity of processing 120 tons of waste per day was built at a cost of Rs 5 crore by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC). The smart transfer station is equipped with two static compactors, two hook loaders, and six capsule devices. Waste from houses and establishments in Bhelupur zone will be compacted into capsules and sent to the plant located in Karsada for disposal via hook loaders, ensuring no visible waste on the streets. HDFC Bank zonal head Manish Tandon handed over the keys of the hook loader to the Mayor. The Mayor said that two years ago, there were 23 large garbage dumps in the city, of which 187 were closed, and the remaining will be shut down in the next couple of months. Municipal commissioner Akshat Verma highlighted the contribution of the bank and the company 'Hyva' in completing the modern smart transfer station within two months, ahead of schedule.
