Dog draws international sympathy, Gaza man remains forgotten

Hamed Ashour, a resident of Gaza, once shared a heartwarming story about a loyal dog that became his companion amid the hardships of life under siege. The story, which went viral last year, was featured in Arab and international magazines, reaching more than five million readers and translated into seven languages. Following the widespread attention, an animal rights organization in Dublin, Ireland, contacted Ashour to check on the dog's well-being. They requested photos of the tent where Hamed and the dog lived. When Ashour sent them, the organization expressed deep concern for the animal's condition and even explored ways to evacuate the dog from Gaza through partner organizations, offering it the promise of a cleaner home and a better life. But no one asked about Hamed. He was the one living in that torn, makeshift tent, 'a place not even suitable for a dog,' as he described. While the dog was seen as deserving rescue, Hamed, like countless other Palestinians in Gaza, remained trapped under siege, forgotten by the very same compassion that overflowed for the animal. This story comes at a time when Gazans have been starving for weeks under 'Israel's' ongoing blockade. Food is scarce, clean water is nearly nonexistent, and more than 70 children have already died from malnutrition, according to humanitarian reports. While thousands of tons of aid remain stuck at border crossings, people like Hamed continue to suffer, facing hunger, disease, and the constant threat of death. The contrast is stark: the world can rally to save a dog, but millions of human beings in Gaza are left to starve, their pleas drowned out by political indifference.

Higher Education Minister: 14 Technological Universities Linked with Industry Partnerships

universities Cairo - 18 June 2025: Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Ayman Ashour, announced that Egypt now hosts 14 technological universities actively engaged in partnerships with industrial and private-sector entities across the country . Speaking during the opening ceremony of the Second International Conference on Technological Education (SCTE2025), Dr. Ashour highlighted the strategic significance of these institutions. He emphasized that they 'offer vital academic tracks aligned with current and future job markets,' playing a key role in preparing skilled graduates to meet national development needs . These technological universities operate under the Supreme Council for Technological Education, which oversees their governance, curriculum development, and quality assurance. Plans are underway to expand the network: 17 additional such universities are expected to be launched across all governorates by the end of 2024, ensuring broader geographic coverage and deeper industry integration . Dr. Ashour also noted that each of the 14 universities maintains active collaboration with industrial partners. These partnerships provide students with hands-on training opportunities, internships, and channels to apply knowledge directly in real-world settings—effectively bridging the gap between academia and industry needs . The Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to empowering youth and advancing the country's innovation and industrial growth agenda. He described the technological universities as 'a strategic pathway to qualify cadres capable of supporting the national economy with skills that match global standards' . President Abdel Fattah El‑Sisi also addressed the rising demand for advanced technological education as part of broader efforts to expand programs in AI, digitization, computer science, and engineering. These initiatives are supporting Egypt's transformation into a regional education and technology hub .

Al-Ahly midfielder Ashour to miss remainder of Club World Cup with broken collarbone

(Reuters) - Al Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour will miss the remainder of the 2025 Club World Cup after scans confirmed he had suffered a broken collarbone, the Egyptian club announced on Sunday. Ashour left the opening match of the revamped competition against Inter Miami, which ended in a goalless draw, in tears after injuring his shoulder. "Medical examinations on Emam Ashour in a Miami hospital showed he sustained a broken collarbone, and he will miss the remaining matches in the Club World Cup," Al Ahly doctor Ahmed Gaballah said via the club's account on X. Ashour, who had previously suffered a serious shoulder injury while playing for the Egyptian national team in 2024, initially fell early in the game and received treatment on the sidelines before returning briefly and missing a one-on-one chance. However, the 27-year-old Egyptian Premier League top scorer was unable to continue and asked to be substituted in the 14th minute, being replaced by Ahmed Sayed (Zizo).
