Rory brings back Asian Championships snooker title
PETALING JAYA: Rory Thor Chuan Leong has etched his name into the history books after claiming his maiden Asian 6-Red Snooker Championship title at the Moors Sports Club in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In the final on Wednesday evening, the Malaysian cueist put up a clinical performance to overpower India's Paris Gupta 6-2 (50-5, 44-2, 8-62, 42-12, 47-40, 1-51, 36-24, 48-2). Chuan Leong's triumph surpassed the previous Malaysian best of a runner-up finish achieved by Moh Keen Ho in 2016. The Penang-born cueist was in sublime form throughout the knockout rounds, brushing aside Singapore's Jaden Ong (5-1), Hong Kong's Man Ming Wa (5-0), and three-time world champion Mohd Asif of Pakistan (5-2) en route to the final. Asif had earlier beaten another Malaysian player Lim Kok Leong 5-3 in the quarter-finals. His success in Colombo comes as a welcome boost after a challenging year, having recently lost his place on the World Snooker Tour following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season. Chuan Leong, who earned a two-year tour card through the Asia-Oceania Q-School in 2023, was unable to reclaim it in either of the two qualifying legs in Bangkok last month. The Asian 6-Red crown marks a timely resurgence for Chuan Leong, who had only previously made the quarter-finals of the same tournament in 2023.

Muhammad Asif reaches Asian 6-Red Snooker Championship semi-finals
Listen to article Pakistan's veteran cueist and three-time world champion Muhammad Asif has confirmed a medal for his country after storming into the semi-finals of the Asian 6-Red Snooker Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka. On the third day of the competition, Asif overcame a tough challenge from Malaysia's Kim Ko Leong during the quarter-finals, registering a hard-fought 5-3 victory to book his place in the last four. Earlier in the pre-quarterfinals, Asif comfortably defeated Cambodia's Nyang Tola 5-1, conceding just one frame en route to the quarterfinals and ensuring at least a bronze medal finish. However, it was disappointment for the other two Pakistani cueists. Defending champion Awais Munir and former Asian champion Mohammad Sajjad were both knocked out in the pre-quarterfinals. Munir, who was hoping to retain his title, was eliminated by Hong Kong's Ming Wa Man in a closely contested 5-3 encounter. Meanwhile, Sajjad was handed a straight 5-0 defeat by Singapore's Sng Eain Yow in a one-sided affair. Asif will now face Malaysia's Thor Chuan Leong in the semi-final on Wednesday (today).

City's Kamal brings adept break-building skills to the snooker table at Asian c'ship
Bhopal: The Asian 6-Red Snooker Championship witnessed an impressive start as Bhopal's Kamal Chawla showcased his expertise at the international level. Bhopal's Kamal Chawla, the reigning IBSF World 6-Red snooker champion, was the most impressive of the three Indians in the fray, scoring a lopsided 4-1 win over Wai Ip Lam of Macao, China, in Group 'C'. Playing at the championship venue in Colombo, Chawla's strategic approach and precise shots dominated the match from the beginning. In the opening frame, Chawla established his authority with calculated moves, securing a 42-5 win. His confidence grew notably in the second frame, where he executed a brilliant 66 clearance, leaving his opponent scoreless. The third frame further demonstrated Chawla's superior form with a spectacular 67 clearance. Though the fourth frame presented a brief challenge when Lam capitalised on Chawla's missed long red pot to score a break of 40, it proved to be a temporary setback. Chawla regained his rhythm in the final frame, securing a convincing 49-7 victory to wrap up the match. This victory holds particular significance as Chawla, the current IBSF World 6-Red snooker champion, aims to add the Asian title to his impressive portfolio. The match highlighted Chawla's exceptional break-building abilities and tactical acumen, skills that have earned him recognition in the international snooker circuit. His experience and composure were evident throughout the game, particularly in how he bounced back after the fourth frame setback. The championship continues to feature top players from across Asia, with Chawla's victory marking a strong start for India's campaign in the tournament.
