The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) head Mohsin Naqvi announced that the 2025 Asia Cup will take place, quashing rumours that the tournament might not be held this year owing to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. While India are the hosts for this edition, the tournament will be played from September 9 to 28 in the UAE. India and Pakistan have been clubbed in the same group, and might even face each other as many as three times in the space of 20 days if both reach the final. It is likely that India's squad will be announced in the coming days. Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah 's availability might not be a sureshot thing. "Bumrah, once again, availability will be a question. However, if he is available, because if he doesn't play the fifth Test as well, then he should be playing the Asia Cup, is what I am thinking. It will be interesting to see what sort of team is picked, but it cannot be too dissimilar to the one that was picked last time," Chopra said on his YouTube channel. Chopra also suggested Bumrah's fellow pacer Mohammed Shami might not be picked for the tournament owing to his fitness issues. "I can almost guarantee that Mohammad Shami won't be there in that because Shami was only being played to test his fitness and prepare him for the Champions Trophy. Now that the bus has sailed, and if he is not part of Tests, I don't see him playing T20 cricket at this point in time," he added. Group A in the Asia Cup features India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong make up Group B. Meanwhile, the tournament opener is placed between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9. India will kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for the 14th. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. The final is scheduled on September 28.

India shouldn't play Pakistan at the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, feels former captain Mohammad Azharuddin who has cited the diplomatic tensions between the two countries following the Pahalgam terror attack as the reason why the marquee clash cannot be held. Azharuddin is the latest to join the chorus of voices expressing their displeasure at the prospect of India and Pakistan squaring off on the cricket field. Earlier this year, India conducted Operation Sindoor which involved precision attacks on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Asian Cricket Council announced the Asia Cup schedule earlier this month which will see India and Pakistan play each other at least once and a maximum three times during the continental tournament slated to be held in the UAE. 'I don't think this should happen because we are playing against Pakistan in ICC and ACC tournaments only," Azharuddin told Aajtak. 'But if you look at the situation, I don't think it should. But at the end of the day, the Government of India and the BCCI will decide, but I feel the situation is bad and I don't think we should play." Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary is also against the two countries playing each other. ANI. 'The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match? A contentious call was made by cricket's governing bodies to schedule an Asia Cup tournament in the wake of the violence along the India-Pakistan border. The upcoming tournament, slated to take place between September 9 and September 28, will be held in the UAE, with the official release of the schedule marking September 14 as the date for the India-Pakistan clash. The cricketing boards and the Asian Cricket Council have come under further criticism for scheduling this match given the friction behind it. Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary, who now serves as a minister of state in West Bengal, came out in open criticism of the decision to hold this match. In an interview with ANI, the former batter made clear that the cricket match shouldn't go ahead. "I am against it. The India-Pakistan match should not be held. Especially after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which civilians have been killed. After that, Operation Sindoor has taken place,' said Tiwary, citing India's military response to the attacks which included aerial targeting of military and terrorist camps inside Pakistan. 'Our Prime Minister is saying…' "The situation was so bad, how can we think of an India-Pakistan match. I feel that it should be considered again and the India-Pakistan match should not happen in such an environment,' continued the former Bengal batter. "Our Prime Minister is saying that the Operation Sindoor is still going on… How can we play a match with Pakistan?' Tiwary's comments follow from a last-minute cancellation of the match between legends from India and Pakistan in the ongoing World Championship of Legends taking place in the UK, which was called off after players such as Harbhajan Singh and the Pathan brothers made themselves unavailable, citing their unwillingness to play against Pakistan in the wake of pressure from fans at home. While the fate of this match and the Asia Cup as a whole remains uncertain and to be decided, India's desire to be accommodating and following the Olympic charter ahead of the planned bid for the 2036 Olympic Games is reportedly the reason for BCCI's agreement for the tournament to go ahead.

The incident was followed by a military showdown between the nations, during which India conducted Operation Sindoor. In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, the BCCI had stalled the confirmation of their participation in the Asia Cup, leaving the tournament on the verge of being cancelled as the Indian cricket board awaited the government's approval. The anticipation ended last week when the ACC head and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, announced the schedule for the Asia Cup. "As of now, the BCCI does not come under the purview of the sports ministry as the National Sports Governance Bill is still to be passed. So, the ministry doesn't have a say, but we will wait and see how the BCCI responds to public sentiment," a sports ministry source told PTI. What happens if India refuse to play against Pakistan in Asia Cup? According to a report in NDTV, India do have the right to forfeit the game against Pakistan, but it will be a loss for the Suryakumar Yadav-led side as the organisers, based on the rules, will consider it as a walkover and hence hand Pakistan the designated points. "This is not a bilateral contest but a match in a multi-nation tournament. If India does not play or forfeit the match, it will give Pakistan a huge advantage. This will be like giving them a walkover, which is not desirable," sources told the channel, confirming that the match is unlikely to be cancelled. Earlier this month, the Yuvraj Singh-led India Champions side refused to play against Pakistan in the second season of the World Championship of Legends in Birmingham for the same reason, following a backlash from fans. The decision forced WCL organisers to call off the game, and they later apologised to the Indian players for "unintentionally causing discomfort."

The Hyderabad Member of Parliament was speaking during a heated debate in parliament over Operation Sindoor on Monday. 'Does your conscience allow you to ask the family members of the people who were killed in Baisaran to watch India's cricket match with Pakistan?... We are stopping 80% of Pakistan's water, saying that water and blood will not flow together. Will you play a cricket match? My conscience does not allow me to watch that match.' Posing a question directly to the government, he asked, "Does this government have the courage to call the 25 dead people and say we have taken revenge in Operation Sindoor, now you watch the match with Pakistan?" Owaisi's remarks came after the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced that the Men's Asia Cup 2025 will be hosted in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28. Group A features India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong make up Group B. Owaisi also questioned how the perpetrators of the Baisaran incident managed to infiltrate India territory. "Who did Pahalgam? We have 7.5 lakh army and central paramilitary force. Earlier, former Indian skipper and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also weighed in on the upcoming India-Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2025, stressing that while sports must continue, terrorism must be firmly dealt with. "I am okay. The sport must go on. At the same time, Pahalgam should not happen, but the sport must go on. Terrorism must not happen; it needs to be stopped. India took a strong stance towards terrorism... Sport needs to be played," Ganguly told ANI.
