Woman's Heart Breaks as Dog Nearly Doesn't Recognize Her After a Year Apart

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A woman's heart "skipped a beat" when she returned home after a year away, due to the devastating reaction she originally received from her dog. TikTok user @queenybanez1 and her family met their dog, Aslan, in 2016. Given that they've spent nearly 10 years together, she believed the dog would be thrilled to see her again after being away for a year. However, as she shared in her July 8 video, Aslan didn't recognize her. She excitedly walked up to him, reaching out her hands. But instead of recognizing her right away, which she told Newsweek had happened when she visited previously, Aslan hesitantly backed away from her. You could see the dog processing who she was in his eyes. Then, the memories came rushing back at once. His tail started wagging rapidly. He cried with excitement, willing his body back and forth. Screenshots from a July 8 TikTok video of a dog not recognizing a woman at first when she returned home a year later. She knew he was "feeling down," likely due to his witnessing her parents arguing when they still lived together. "I wrote on that vid, on the bottom part, saying that he sounds like he's telling me, 'Where have you been? The house is so lonely now because Mama left due to their arguments with Papa,'" she said. Although the woman comes home to visit, it's not as often as she would like. While for dogs, one year can feel like a lifetime, Aslan is luckily not alone. She said he's living with her dad and has other dogs and cats to keep him company. Viewer Reactions As of Friday, the TikTok video reached over 1.7 million views, 326,200 likes and 1,330 comments. "The pain after one year. More like seven years to them," one TikTok user commented. A second user wrote: "Dogs can recognize how long you're gone by your scent disappearing little by little. Ashi must've thought you're gone and never coming back." "The way he started crying in joy when he recognized you," another commenter said. One commenter pointed out that Aslan's initial lack of recognition could be due to not being able to see her clearly: "he probably has poor eyesight but since he smelled you he recognized you right away." What's on: Viking Funeral, Just One Year, and Italian vibes are on in Darwin this weekend

WHAT'S ON THIS WEEKEND When I was writing my 'What's On' guide for We Are Locals this weekend I actually had to add an extra page – but I'll give you the quick rundown. Today, get a last minute ticket to spend the afternoon with the NT Irish Music Festival at the Darwin Ski Club – a celebration featuring live bands, traditional Irish dancing, food stalls, and a set from Irish rock legends, Aslan. Cocktail lovers can also buy a ticket for the Cocktail Club at Bar Kokomo this afternoon, or as the sun sets, head to Dinah Beach for the annual Viking Funeral, a spectacular night of Viking-themed fun and live music. Later, catch Genie and the Bottles bringing neo-soul grooves to Flora's Temper, or grab a ticket to dance into the night with Afrodisia at Bustard Town. On Sunday, back at Flora's Temper join in for a Jazz Jam Session, or – and this sounds particularly fun – buy a Single Fin beer at Hotel Darwin as your ticket to try your luck on the mechanical surfboard. If you're feeling adventurous after your surf – jump on the ferry and go bootscootin' with the Honky Tonk Disco at Cox Country Club. Then, keeping in theme – finish the weekend on a high at the Boots Club Disco at the Railway Club! SOMEWHERE YOU NEED TO EAT A lot of people on my Instagram feed are having a Euro Summer right now, but to be honest – Darwin Dry season is giving plenty. I pretty much went to Italy on the weekend anyway … have you driven down the Esplanade recently? ESP, the restaurant and terrace at the Novotel CBD has had a glow-up, and it was impossible not to stop for an Aperol on their cute green and white decorative chairs, under the umbrellas! It was also announced this week that their chef, Angleuo, is in the Top three finalists for the Gold Plate Awards Chef of the year – so now I wish we'd eaten too. An excuse to go back, it seems. LOCAL'S TIP My locals tip this week is a reminder to check out the Darwin Fringe Festival program guide – It kicked off yesterday. Programs like the Fringe nurture the local creative community and provide a vital platform for emerging artists – it's a grassroots festival – by locals, for locals – that encourages risk-taking, innovation, and connection through art. The Fringe Director Hannah used the word 'scaffolding' which I really liked: It's the platform that holds up all ideas, reinforces them, and develops them – it celebrates the Top End's unique stories, humour, politics, and talent. A couple that piqued my interest included one about living on our phones, and one about what it means to be a young person in today's society – but it was 'Just One Year' – a work by local creatives, that resonated most with me as I just marked the anniversary of another year in Darwin. Four girls are sent on a twelve-month work contract to Darwin, not knowing anyone or anything about what the next year will entail. A relatable and absurd journey of surviving the build up, wading through a shallow dating pool, debating laksa preferences, learning about new cultures, and asking and answering the question … 'how long will you stay?' Check out the program and go and see a show this week – you too can be part of the scaffolding of arts in the NT.

Aslan: 'That excitement, that's what's enabled us to keep pushing forward'

Almost four decades after their first single, Aslan guitarist Billy McGuinness says the legendary rock band is feeling the same buzz they did in 1986 as their latest single drops. The outfit's newest single, A Hand To Hold, is out now, their second release from their upcoming album and the latest to feature vocals from new singer Lee Tomkins. The single, which will be played live for the first time in Perth tonight as Aslan kick off their Australian tour, follows from their rockier hit Hear Your Call, which dropped in March. This latest track, Aslan say, 'shows a different side' to the iconic band. 'There's nervousness, we're excited,' long standing Aslan guitarist Billy McGuinness told the Star's Scene ahead of the release of their latest single, A Hand To Hold. 'And the only way, the way we test out music is, you play in front of a live audience, and that gives you so much. So there is an excitement there, we're going to be performing it in Lynott's in Perth, which is the first gig. 'I can't wait to hear how it goes down. We're very proud of the track. It's showing a different side of Aslan to Hear Your Call. 'Hear Your Call had the Aslan sound, and you kind of knew it was Aslan. With this track, a few people that I played it to, (I asked them) 'Who do you think this band is?' 'They're going, 'Geez, I haven't a clue'. And I think that's great, because it's different. And my, in my opinion, different is good'. He added: 'It's in your head, and it's catchy. I think it's showing Aslan's pop sensibilities, if that makes sense? Hear Your Call was a real rock song. But Hand To Hold is showing a poppier side of Aslan, which I think is great.' Aslan's new singer Lee Tomkins added: 'It's something Aslan hasn't done, a happy, happy poppy song, which Aslan hasn't done in a long, long time. 'So it's to show that side again, to show the fans that they can still do that type of thing, happy sing along. Enjoy yourself. Everyone clapping along. That's what it's made for. It's a sing along song'. Billy said the new single deals with life and how sometimes people can feel like nothing is going their way - like there's "A Devil in Heaven and a God in Hell." 'It's like what we say in the song,' Billy said. 'Some days it feels like there's a devil in heaven and a god in hell, because nothing is going right for you, and you get down. 'But the song is uplifting, as it's saying no matter what shit you're going through, there is someone there that can help you, that can hold your hands and make the day better, you know? There's a positivity in the song.' 'It's about bringing people together, basically, that's what the song is about,' Lee added. 'And to get people together, singing along, clapping along. It's just people enjoying themselves and taking a break from the crap that's going on in life, when they can just come to a gig, whatever it may be, for two hours, sing along, forget about life and enjoy themselves.' Billy said the excitement the band felt waiting to hear their first single, This Is, is still felt 40 years later. 'We're as excited about it,' the guitarist shared. 'Like we're over 40 years doing this and I remember back in 1986 when we released our first single This Is and the excitement of waiting to hear it on the radio or waiting to play it live, that hasn't changed. 'Fast forward 40 years, and we've still, I'm dying to hear it on the radio, and what do people think of it and dying to play it live. 'And I think that's a great thing, that we haven't lost that excitement or drive or buzz. 'When Lee came in, one thing that we didn't know at the time. We were just listening to him singing, but we didn't know that he was such a brilliant songwriter as well in his own right. 'So with him, with the guitar, and then you have Joe, who was one of the main songwriters with Aslan as well. 'So when you have Lee hooking up with Joe, it's different, it's fuzzy, it's exciting. 'And for a band that's going over 40 years, to have that excitement, I think it that's what's enabled us to keep pushing forward, because the day when we decide we don't get excited about music. Plus we're really enjoying it. I have to say, the fun we're having, the fun is back!' Aslan's iconic frontman Christy Dignam passed away just over two years ago, on June 13, 2023. Billy says the band still honour his legacy at every show. 'It happens at every gig,' Billy said. 'This Is, Lee will. Lee will always do a bit of a spiel about Christy. And if it's not This Is, it could be Crazy World, but he's mentioned at every gig. 'Look, what can you say? Do you know what I mean? He's gone. Life goes on, music goes on, and that's it. But we do mention him at every gig'. Aslan's latest single A Hand To Hold is out now on all streaming platforms. Aslan kick off their Australian tour tonight, before returning to Europe to play a string of UK and Irish dates later in the year.

Firefighters' Sweet Way of Comforting Dogs Involved in Car Crash Is Touching Hearts

Firefighters' Sweet Way of Comforting Dogs Involved in Car Crash Is Touching Hearts originally appeared on Parade Pets. Even minor car crashes can be scary for those involved in them, and I'm not just talking about humans. It's even more unfortunate when these accidents happen while a driver has their beloved dog riding along with them. For a pup who has no concept of what a car accident is or even that it's something that could possibly happen, it has to be so terrifying and confusing. But then, there are people like the ones in the TikTok video below who make all the difference. When Florida firefighters responded to a crash, they were sure to comfort the dogs who had been riding in the car with their mom. In the footage that was shared by Fox 13 Tampa Bay on TikTok on July 7, Palm Beach County firefighters can be seen snuggling two dogs and even letting them hang out in the fire truck after their mom, Gabriella Obregon, got into a car crash while driving on the Florida Turnpike. According to what Obregon told the news outlet, she lost control of her vehicle when her car slipped and spun out, hitting the barrier on the highway in the process. Her first concern was her dogs, who are named Simba and Aslan. "What scared me most was having my dogs with me," she said. "After calling 911 and my parents, I got out of the car and was waiting when a group of Palm Beach firefighters showed up." Fortunately, she and her dogs were in good hands. Once the firefighters made sure she was safe, they checked on Simba and Aslan and carried them to you can imagine, Obregon shared just how grateful she is that these firefighters took such good care of her and her pups. "Their job is dangerous and draining, and I know it's the kind of work that can harden people over time. But these men were the opposite," she said. "They were selfless, full of heart, and radiated a kind of joy that reminded me there's still so much good in this world. I'll never forget what they did for me and my dogs." This simple act of kindness has obviously gone such a long way for Obregon and her dogs at a time when they really need it. It's stories like these that really restore all my faith in humanity!Firefighters' Sweet Way of Comforting Dogs Involved in Car Crash Is Touching Hearts first appeared on Parade Pets on Jul 9, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade Pets on Jul 9, 2025, where it first appeared.
