The 27-year-old shortstop was drafted by Houston in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft and stepped into the role vacated by Carlos Correa's departure in free agency. Peña played an integral part in the Astros' 2022 run to the World Series, earning ALCS MVP and World Series MVP honors and becoming a fan favorite.
Peña is set to reach unrestricted free agency in 2028, and Houston has made clear its intention to keep their homegrown star long-term.

Last Friday against the Chicago Cubs, pitcher Cade Horton drilled Peña in the left ribcage and he was removed from the contest a few innings later.
Initial X-rays were negative, but MRI and CT scans later confirmed a fracture, and the team announced he was placed on the 10-day injured list.
Astros fans responded to the disappointing announcement on X.

A fan said, "What a disaster. These injuries are way too many for any team to overcome."
"You can't make this stuff up," added another.
"Rest up Peña," another fan said.
One fan wrote, "I hate everything."
"This team is badly in need of the all star break lol," one more added.
Before the injury, Peña was enjoying the best full season of his career, batting .322 with 11 home runs and 15 stolen bases over 82 games. His performance ranked among the National League leaders in batting average and stolen bases, reinforcing his status as one of baseball's rising stars.
Houston has surged lately, going 50–34 and opening a 6½-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West, with Peña playing a pivotal role in their success.
