Suvendu demands SIR in Bengal to remove illegal voters from electoral rolls

Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly , Suvendu Adhikari , on Monday demanded that special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be conducted in the state as is being done in Bihar for removing illegal voters from the list. He maintained that those Hindus who have come to India from Bangladesh due to religious persecution need not be afraid. Maintaining that the BJP stands firm with them, he said, "No Rohingya or Bangladeshi Muslim illegal immigrant, however, will be allowed to have their names in the electoral rolls in the state." Live Events The SIR of electoral rolls has triggered a major political controversy in Bihar, where elections are due later this year, with the opposition INDIA bloc alleging that it was designed to "benefit the ruling NDA", a charge denied by the EC that is carrying out the massive exercise. Adhikari alleged that there are 2.15 crore jobless people in West Bengal, while alleging the flight of industries from the state. "Why are there 60 lakh migrant labourers from the state working outside if the chief minister has provided work to all?" he asked. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the annual Trinamool Congress' Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata on Monday. Stating that the TMC supremo has asserted in the rally that her party will win more seats in the 2026 West Bengal assembly polls than the numbers it secured in 2021, Adhikari said, "I also challenge that she will be a former chief minister of the state after the next elections." Pointing to the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital and the alleged sexual assault of a student at a law college in Kolkata, he claimed that womenfolk in the state "are not safe under the present dispensation". Adhikari and other leaders participated in the programme called by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) to protest the atrocities on women and demand security for them. Alleging that north Bengal lacks modern healthcare facilities, he claimed that the state government was not providing land for an AIIMS that the central government wants to set up for the benefit of the people here. He alleged that tea garden workers in north Bengal were not getting their dues while the Mamata Banerjee government was working to sell off the land of the gardens.

Rupee weakens slightly, broad dollar softness cushions pressure

The Indian rupee logged a modest decline on Monday, pressured by dollar bids from foreign and local private banks, though broad-based weakness in the greenback helped the local currency limit further losses. The rupee closed at 86.2925 against the U.S. dollar, down about 0.2% on the day, after touching a near one-month low of 86.35 earlier in the session. The Indian rupee and the Indonesian rupiah are among the few regional currencies nursing losses on the year so far, even as their peers, such as the Taiwan dollar and the Korean won, have climbed over 11% and 6%, respectively. Muted portfolio flows, India's external investment deficit and likely FX reserve accumulation by the Reserve Bank of India are among the reasons cited by analysts for rupee's lacklustre performance this year. Live Events On the day, price action appeared to indicate modest outflows but dollar-buying pressure eased in the latter half of the session, helping the rupee trim its losses, a trader at a private bank said. India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50, closed higher by about 0.5% each on the day, while the benchmark 10-year bond yield was last quoted slightly lower at 6.2986%. In the near term, focus will be on developments on two fronts: how U.S. economic data impact expectations of rate cuts and news surrounding U.S.-India trade negotiations ahead of the August 1 deadline for higher U.S. tariffs to take effect. "We maintain our view that slower growth, profit margin compression and export price reduction will contain the impact of tariffs, and that a slower economy will justify the Fed resuming rate cuts in September," ANZ said in a Monday note.

'Problem is not talent': Startup founder explains why India lags in tech despite having world's best engineering minds

Akshat Shrivastava , founder of financial education platform Wisdom Hatch, has criticised India's slow adoption of technology-driven services. In a social media post, Shrivastava said, 'Tech supremacy leads to Economic supremacy. This is a basic fact. Right from Mesopotamia, Romans, Persians. And, in modern history: Spanish, UK, and now the US & China. Every empire has exhibited this trait.' He acknowledged India's strength in engineering talent but said that technological implementation remained weak. 'One could argue that: India has best engineering talent in the world. But, we are far away from Tech supremacy. We still look at BTC, Cryptos, blockchain with derision. Forget that: we still prefer taxi mafias over apps,' he wrote. In June, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had clarified that the newly issued Goa Transport Aggregators Guidelines 2025 do not support entry of companies like Ola and Uber. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo — Akshat_World (@Akshat_World) 'Taxi operators need not be in any sort of confusion. The guidelines do not aim to open flood gates for national cab aggregators like Ola and Uber,' Sawant said. Tourists face problems, allege monopoly Tourists and some locals have criticised Goa's taxi setup, calling it a monopoly that blocks even local app-based services. Currently, only Goa Miles and Goa Taxi are permitted, but visitors claim they often face difficulties using them due to interference from taxi unions. Live Events In April, a tourist described the situation as a 'transport mafia'. 'Here, no private taxi apps like Ola and Uber are available; you have to rely on the unions who operate on their whim,' he wrote, adding that he was charged ₹1,600 for a 10 km journey. Cultural issues and misaligned incentives Shrivastava said that the problem is not lack of talent, but a deeper cultural and policy challenge. 'Forget even that: with the rise of alt science, astrology, gambling. The scientific temper has never been this low in our country. Problem is not talent. The problem is: misaligned incentives. Politicians do regressive things to win. But economy rewards progressive things & futuristic planning, which eventually leads to tech supremacy,' he said. Crypto policy still evolving India continues to take a cautious stance on new technologies like cryptocurrency. While not legal tender, digital assets can be held and traded under strict rules, including a 30% tax on gains. The Reserve Bank of India maintains that crypto poses risks to financial stability, and a formal crypto policy or bill is expected later in 2025.
