Billy Horschel to undergo hip surgery, will miss multiple months and majors
Billy Horschel will have hip surgery next week and could potentially miss this season's remaining major golf championships. Horschel, 38, announced on social media Tuesday that he will undergo right hip surgery and expects to return in late summer or early fall. 'It's an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar, but this is a preventative measure,' Horschel said in a video. 'I'm already looking forward to getting the rehab started, getting back to practicing.' Health update. After consulting with doctors and my team, I have decided to have right hip surgery early next week out in Colorado. It's an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar but this is a preventative measure. I'm already itching to start rehab,… — Billy Horschel (@BillyHo_Golf) May 6, 2025 Two weeks ago, Horschel withdrew from the Zurich Classic, where he was set to compete alongside Tom Hage, due to a lower-body injury. Horschel has 12 starts this year and two top-10 finishes at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Valspar Championship. He ranks No. 24 in the Official World Golf Rankings, No. 58 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 16 in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings. Horschel also competed in the Tomorrow's Golf League's (TGL) inaugural season and helped his team, the Atlanta Drive, win the title with a clutch 18-foot birdie putt in the final. His energy and performance on the TGL stage, along with his Ryder Cup standings, fueled speculation that he could make his Ryder Cup debut this summer as a captain's pick. But Horschel's hip surgery casts doubt on whether he'd be available for the event, which takes place on Sept. 26-28, at Bethpage Black in New York. Billy Horschel's Ryder Cup dreams likely dashed with this announcement
Billy Horschel's Ryder Cup dreams are likely dashed – for this year at least. Horschel announced Tuesday morning that he is set to undergo right hip surgery early next week in Colorado and will be sidelined multiple months, perhaps the rest of this season. Advertisement 'It's an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar, but this is a preventative measure,' Horschel said. 'I'm already itching to start rehab, get back to practicing, and I look forward to returning to the course sometime around late summer/early fall.' Horschel withdrew from the Zurich Classic, where he was set to partner with Tom Hoge, citing a lower body injury. The 38-year-old Horschel had made 12 starts this season, posting two top-10s but also missing five cuts. He currently sits No. 58 in FedExCup points, No. 24 in the Official World Golf Ranking and No. 16 in U.S. Ryder Cup points. Advertisement Horschel also competed in the inaugural season of TGL, where his Atlanta Drive GC won the title. Horschel's performance, passion and energy while playing on that team prompted many to tab him for a potential Ryder Cup debut this fall at Bethpage. The matches are scheduled for Sept. 25-28, so even if Horschel returns before then, he would need to receive a captain's pick from Keegan Bradley, and even then, he likely would not have many, if any, reps. 'Every time we're in a Ryder Cup year, I'm very well aware that I haven't been part of a Ryder Cup team," Horschel told Golf Channel on April 1. "But I can't solely focus on that. I can't have that be the driving force. At the end of the day, I've got to try and continue to get better as a player, continue to improve as a person, and hopefully through those gains and improvement, I can finally make a Ryder Cup team. I've done a lot of things in my career that I'm very grateful for and the wins I've had, and do I feel like I should be on a Ryder Cup team? Yeah, but have I done what I need to in terms of playing three, four, five months of consistent golf leading into the Ryder Cup? I haven't done that, and that's sort of been the Achilles heel a little bit; I just haven't played as well over a period of time as the other 12 guys. "I'm in the best situation that I think I've ever been in my career, at this stage, six months out from a Ryder Cup. I think if I can continue to improve and continue to play well and play consistently well, hopefully it lends itself to being a part of a Ryder Cup team. 'I would love to be a part of that zoo in New York. … It's going to be the craziest Ryder Cup ever.'

TGL contemplating expansion for next season, following successful debut
For those who think golf needs a longer offseason, TGL might be the ticket. The high-tech indoor golf league wrapped up its inaugural season last week with Billy Horschel hitting the putt heard' round the SoFi Center to lead Atlanta Drive to the title over New York. And now it goes away for nine months. Mike McCarley, the co-founder of TMRW Sports with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, began taking notes even before the season started on what can be improved for 2026, whether it's technology or having players connect with their city (San Diego native Xander Schauffele plays for New York). The average rating on ESPN platforms was just over 500,000 viewers. TMRW Sports pushes that number over 850,000 using Nielsen Big Data + Panel, which includes smart TVs along with cable boxes. The number that stood out to McCarley was a viewing audience some 12 years younger (median age 52) than traditional golf, trailing only the NBA. There also were the intangibles, such as the joy Horschel and Atlanta Drive owner Arthur Blank showed when they won. 'I was visiting the locker room of the teams that won and lost. Hearing them talk about what they should do differently next year was meaningful,' McCarley said. That indicated to him the players bought into it, even though there were times of hit-and-giggle (Woods getting the yardage wrong by 100 yards, any of Kevin Kisner's shanks). 'They started to figure out the ins and outs of competition, some of the strategy and rules, like the hammer,' he said. TMRW Sports already is working with ESPN on a schedule for 2026, though it likely will fall into the January-March window again. Expansion is a strong possibility. One group already is planning to bid for a franchise in Dallas and has put the total investment at $77 million. McCarley said the six original teams — Atlanta, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Jupiter — return with few, if any, changes to the rosters. As for more teams for 2026? 'There's been a ton of interest over the course of a season,' he said. McCarley said at least one potential expansion group has been to every match, most of them owners of franchises in sports from cricket to soccer. He also said TMRW Sports is exploring sites for a potential arena on the West Coast, which might help with travel. That's in the early stages and more than a year away if it happens. And if the team concept is supposed to work, shouldn't the Atlanta Drive club of Horschel, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover get rings?
