Flyers add scoring, size in first round of NHL Draft with Porter Martone, Jack Nesbitt picks

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Headed into Friday's first round of the 2025 NHL draft, the Philadelphia Flyers system had two discernible needs: more size and snarl, particularly considering the way the league is trending lately, and another potentially high-end center. They may have addressed both with Porter Martone, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound agitating winger taken with the sixth-overall pick, and Jack Nesbitt, a 6-4, 183-pound pivot that they traded up to acquire 12th overall. Advertisement Regarding Martone, GM Daniel Briere stuck to his word from earlier this month when he suggested the plan was to select the best player available with the Flyers' highest pick. After there was a run on centers with Michael Misa, Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers and Brady Martin going second through fifth, the Flyers snagged Martone, who posted 37 goals and 98 points in 57 games as a right wing for OHL Brampton this past season. 'We would have preferred a center, but we felt we couldn't pass up on a chance to bring a difference-maker like Porter Martone to the team,' Briere said. A legendary moment. Charles Barkley welcomes Porter Martone to the City of Brotherly Love. #NHLDraft — Philadelphia Flyers (@NHLFlyers) June 28, 2025 Martone is viewed not only as a scorer but someone who can play an aggressive, physical style when necessary. That was overtly reflected in a trio of players Martone said he looks at as comparables: Corey Perry, Matthew Tkachuk and Wayne Simmonds. He also may be the most NHL-ready player of the draft. For one thing, wingers are typically better able to acclimate to the league more quickly than any other position, and Martone was the only winger selected among the first dozen picks. He also got a brief taste playing with and against NHL players after he earned an invite to the IIHF World Championships in May to skate for Team Canada at the conclusion of his junior season. Martone expressed a high level of confidence that his path to the NHL will be an abbreviated one, and Briere didn't necessarily disagree. 'At the World Championships (playing) against NHL players — I think I proved that I can do that. I think I proved that I fit in,' Martone said. 'But, I'm going to continue to get better every single day.' Said Briere: 'His body, the way he's built, is a little bigger, thicker guy. … He's a really good player already. He's pretty close to being ready. I don't know that it's going to be the right thing to play him this year in the upcoming season, but we'll see. If there's one thing I would say in this draft, he's pretty close to being the most ready out of that group.' Advertisement Martone is also familiar with three current Flyers from his experience at the World Championships: Travis Konecny, Travis Sanheim and Tyson Foerster, who also skated for Team Canada. Briere said that he received texts from Sanheim and Konecny joyfully approving of the pick, while Foerster 'couldn't say more good things about Porter in trying to convince me to take him.' 'All three of those guys were tremendous to me,' said Martone, who was scoreless in two games in the tournament. 'One thing I noticed over there is how much they loved being a Flyer, and how much they take pride in being a Flyer. … I can't wait to be their teammate.' Nesbitt is more of a project than Martone. While his size and scoring are intriguing — he posted 64 points in 65 games with OHL Windsor this season — his skating is a distinct area of concern. Nesbitt knows it's something he needs to work on, while concurrently adding more bulk. 'I play a very physical game. As a bigger guy, I need to improve my skating and I'm looking to put on a little weight, so that's going to come, as well,' Nesbitt said. 'But, yeah, I'm going to be working a lot of my skating, quick feet. As a centerman, I have to get into the small areas pretty quick, and be able to forecheck.' That's clearly something that the Flyers figure Nesbitt, who was voted the most improved player in the OHL coaches poll, will be able to overcome, considering they paid a fairly hefty price to move up to take him in surrendering the 22nd and 31st overall picks to the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to a Flyers team source, the club was under the impression that Nesbitt, who was 15th in Corey Pronman's final mock draft, would be taken 'in the next pick or two,' which forced them into action. Why did they target Nesbitt so aggressively? 'The package,' Briere said. 'The combination of the size, the grit, the playmaking abilities, the goal scoring already. Second half of the season, he took a big step on a really good Windsor team.' Advertisement Regarding his skating, Briere compared Nesbitt with Foerster, who dropped to 23rd in the 2020 draft due to perceived skating issues, but has since become a key cog in the Flyers' future. 'If (Nesbitt) hits as a second-line center, it's going to be a huge asset for us,' Briere said. As for Martone and Nesbitt both having decent size, that's something that, if you believe Briere, was more of a coincidence than anything else. 'It's a nice bonus that they're both tall and will bring us size, as well,' he said. 'But it just kind of worked out that way. It wasn't a plan that we had in mind going into the draft that we wanted to get bigger. It just happened that way.' The Flyers have seven picks on Saturday when the draft resumes, including three in the top half of the second round (36, 40 and 48 overall). Briere said there were opportunities to move up again late in the first round, but after trading a second-round pick to Anaheim as part of the deal for Trevor Zegras, and losing the 31st overall pick in the move to grab Nesbitt, they will likely use at least their three second-rounders on Saturday. Inside look at how New Jersey Air National Guard pilots defend restricted airspace as violations spike

How Air National Guard pilots in New Jersey protect the airspace — and the president How Air national Guard pilots in New Jersey protect the airspace — and the president How Air national Guard pilots in New Jersey protect the airspace — and the president Sirens blare at the New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing base in Atlantic City. The pilots suit up, sprint to their jets and in minutes are off the ground. "One minute you're sitting in a chair watching TV. The next minute, you're in the sky flying," said Lt. Col. Tom Still, the alert force commander for the 177th Fighter Wing. This is what officials say it looks like when these pilots get a call from NORAD to contact planes that have violated restricted airspace. On Thursday, CBS News Philadelphia got an inside look at the response as federal numbers show a rise in violations, particularly in one nearby area. These Temporary Flight Restrictions, known as TFRs, are put in place by the FAA and enforced by NORAD in areas where high-profile world leaders may be. Leaders in Atlantic City are putting out the word to local pilots: Expect to see them in our area over the summer. "The TFRs haven't been around all year. They're starting to get activated a lot more up North," Still said. That "North" that Still is referring to is Bedminster, New Jersey, home to one of President Trump's golf clubs and a spot he often frequents during the summer months. Federal officials say they've seen a spike in violations of the TFRs in just the last week. According to a NORAD spokesperson, the agency has responded to 12 TFR violations in the Bedminster area since Mr. Trump assumed office on Jan. 20. Eight of those have happened within the last week. On June 20, NORAD reported five violations, with another three coming the next day, including one that needed to be intercepted by a fighter jet. Still says, in his experience, almost all violators don't know they're in a TFR when they're contacted. "They're surprised. They don't understand why there's an armed military aircraft next to them," Still said. "We're always assuming the best, but prepared for the worst." Leaders say they go through a process of trying to make contact with violators. That starts with a radio call, according to officials. If that doesn't work, fighter jets can pull up beside violators and rock their wings back and forth to try and signal them. After that, things can get more drastic. "We do a move called a headbutt where we fly across their nose, popping out flares to get their attention," Still said. Officials say the message is before you take off this summer, make sure you know where you can and can't fly, as federal penalties can be stiff. According to the FAA, violators face anything from a warning to a fine, and even have their flight certificates revoked. According to Still, Atlantic City is one of several bases along the East Coast that NORAD can call upon to help enforce TFRs. Generally, he says, they can be called to help anywhere from Massachusetts to Washington, D.C., and can be over major cities like Philadelphia and New York in a matter of minutes. Still says pilots at the base can also be called in to help commercial airlines with reports of unruly passengers, and these pilots serve as a first line of defense over our skies. "We're trained to protect America against multiple threats," Still said.

Brutal Temperatures Expected for Many on Wednesday, but Relief Is Near

Relief is in sight, but hot temperatures are expected for another day — at least — across much of the Eastern United States, forecasters said, with a break in the heat possible in many areas on Thursday. That would signal an end to a dangerous and unrelenting heat wave that has gripped large swaths of the central and eastern parts of the country, sending temperatures and humidity levels soaring. On Tuesday, more than 20 locations across the East recorded temperatures in the triple digits. One of the highest readings was in Baltimore, where the temperature reached 105 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the city's hottest June 24 in 15 years. Not far behind was Newark, where a high of 103 surpassed its previous record for the day of 97 degrees, set in 1966, and matched its record high for the month, set in 2021. At the airport in Atlantic City, N.J., the temperature rose to 102 degrees, the highest there since July 2011. Four locations in and near New York City recorded temperatures of 100 degrees or more, including Kennedy International Airport, which reached 102 degrees. That broke the airport's longstanding record for the month of June of 99 degrees, set in 1964. Central Park, home to the city's official climate station, hit 99 degrees, breaking a June 24 record that had stood since 1888. Tuesday also was New York City's hottest day since 2012. Heat advisories remained in effect on Wednesday across much of the central and eastern United States, with extreme heat warnings in place through the evening along a wide stretch of the East Coast, from central and eastern North Carolina to New Jersey. Portions of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio were also under extreme heat warnings. Heat index values — a measure of how hot it feels when relative humidity is combined with air temperature — were expected to reach as high as 110 degrees in parts of New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Bob Oravec, a meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center, said that although Wednesday's temperatures would generally fall short of Tuesday's extremes, dangerous heat was still expected for many areas, with triple-digit readings still possible. Forecast risk of unhealthy heat for Wednesday Some Moderate High 'There will probably be some 100 degree temperatures,' he said on Wednesday. 'But across the East, after today, it doesn't look like anymore 100 degree temperatures for a while.' The high-pressure system that has lingered over the East is forecast to weaken starting midweek, with a cold front also expected to push southward. That should bring some relief, particularly in the Northeast, where even below-average temperatures are likely. 'For Saturday in Boston, it's forecast to be 68 degrees Fahrenheit,' Mr. Oravec said. 'That's, like, some 30-plus degrees cooler than it was a few days ago.' Still, he noted that not all regions would escape the heat. Areas from the Great Lakes into the Mid-Atlantic will most likely remain warm into the weekend. 'There's still going to be an area of 85- and 90-degree temperatures,' he said. 'Still warmer than average, but no records.'

EXCLUSIVE Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poke fun at Meghan Markle with barbed comment about her recipes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poked fun at Meghan Markle during their stand-up comedy show over the weekend after the Duchess of Sussex was reprimanded by the queen of jams over her latest As Ever release. The Saturday Night Live alums took over Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 21, for their Restless Leg Tour where they threw shade at many stars including Prince Harry 's wife, Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum, according to an insider who spoke with Daily Mail. Tina, 55, and Amy, 53, opened the show with a monologue that was similar to them hosting a past Golden Globe award show as they took the stage wearing sparkly gowns with the 30 Rock star comparing her gold dress to ' Heidi Klum for Spirit of Halloween' and jewelry from the 'Disney Pandora menopause collection.' At first, they joked about the celebrities who were not in attendance at Ocean's Ovation Hall theatre, kicking it off with Ben Affleck. 'Ben Affleck is not here. He's home going through his contacts looking for more Jennifers to bother,' Tina said. Amy added, ' Nicole Kidman is not here tonight. She's too busy being in every single movie and TV show in her name.' The Saturday Night Live alums roasted celebrities like the Duchess of Sussex, Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum as they took the stage at Ocean's Ovation Hall on Saturday 'Leonardo DiCaprio is not here. I assume because Amy and I have combined age of 105,' Tina continued their opening speech. Then, Amy dissed Meghan Markle, 43, for not being in the crowd because she was too busy cooking, specifically baking cookies topped with edible flower petals (also known as 'flower sprinkles') - featured on her With Love, Meghan Netflix show. 'Meghan Markle is not here tonight. She's putting flower sprinkles on cookies, and Piers Morgan is furiously rage masturbating about it,' the Parks and Recreation star snided, referring to the UK journalist who mocks Prince Harry and Meghan. Continuing their celebrity roast, they told the audience that they argue with each other over how they would 'cook Channing Tatum.' Amy insisted she would 'dice him up and pan fry him over an open flame,' while Tina suggested she would 'slow braise' and top 'olive oil with lemon,' and then 'save his skin to make merkins so that no spiders get into our vaginas at night.' Although there were no celebs in the audience, Amy and Tina praised the 'white women' in the crowd as the theater lights came on and the comedians gave a sigh of relief that it was 'finally a safe place for you.' The joke was seemingly in reference to the heightened sexual assault accusations and convictions in Hollywood, including Harvey Weinstein, who is serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in 2022. They made a comment later on in the show about how they did some 'fun things' with him in 2012, but then Tina told the audience, 'Don't worry about it. Don't Google it. Tina informed all the mothers in the audience that they shouldn't waste their time making Meghan's 'fruit rainbow' for birthday parties because kids don't remember at a young age The famous friends continued the show with different segments, including a mock SNL Weekend Update with surprise guest Will Forte followed by Amy doing her own stand-up comedy bit to 'test out new material,' she said, and Tina following suit by sharing a timeline of their friendship. When Tina talked about throwing her kids' birthday parties when they were younger - she has two daughters with her husband Jeff Richmond (Alice, 19, and Penelope, 13) - she informed the audience that parents shouldn't stress about throwing parties. 'They're not going to remember their first seven birthday parties. They'll remember the feeling of being loved. They're not going to remember if the Bluey plates don't match the Paw Patrol cup,' she said. The Mean Girls actress then added in another Meghan Markle joke. This time referencing the mother-of-two's fruit platter made in the shape of a rainbow. 'So, if you're like making a Meghan Sussex fruit rainbow, just know that you're doing that for you. Okay? You're doing that to prove something to yourself and that's okay too,' Tina shared with all the mothers in the audience. Shortly after, she shaded Meghan and Harry blurring their kids' faces when sharing photos of Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, with the public. When highlighting the year 2008, Tina said that Amy gave birth to her 'beautiful son Archie,' who is now 16 (she also has a son Abel, 14, with ex Will Arnett). In the slideshow behind her, she showed a photo of Amy with Archie and blurred Archie's face - similar to the way Meghan and Harry blur photos of their Archie. 'I wanted to respect Archie's privacy so that is a picture of Amy with a baby filter on it,' Tina said. 'Still really cute.' In the past, Amy commented about Prince Harry and Meghan naming their son Archie. She told Seth Meyers back in 2019, that they 'look like a real cute couple and I love that name [Archie].' The Late Night with Seth Meyers host noted that Amy had her own 'William and Harry situation' with her two sons because her youngest, Abel, is also a redhead. She remarked, 'Now that you say it, I really feel that they're copying me. Like, "get off my jock, man!" But joking about it, she added that the royal family can get away with copying her because it's legal in England. Tina and Amy performed two sold out shows at Ocean Casino Resort on June 21st - a matinee and an evening show - along with Zarna Garg who opened for them. They closed out each event by sitting on comfy chairs in pajamas as they read questions submitted by fans. In between sets, they enjoyed cuisine from the hotel's popular seafood restaurant, Linguini By The Sea, an insider shared with Daily Mail. Their show at Ocean was part of the hotel's Summer of Sevens birthday celebration, which is a lineup of 'seven cherry-picked new experiences' offered by the resort, including promotions and sweepstakes and headline entertainment. After headlining Atlantic City, they performed their final show of their tour - which began in March in Orlando - on Sunday at the Prudential Center in Newark.
