PSBs explore joint ventures after success of common auction portal

State-run banks are examining the feasibility of setting up more joint ventures among themselves for business and operational efficiency, encouraged by the success of the common property listing and e-auction portal through which more than 100,000 seized properties have been auctioned in the past 11 months. A four-member committee comprising senior executives from public sector banks (PSBs), including Bank of India , Union Bank and Central Bank of India, has been set up to look at the capital requirement for these joint ventures, said two bank executives aware of the development. The panel was set up in June. These initiatives are a part of state-run banks' 'Enhanced Access & Service Excellence (EASE)' reforms agenda. "The committee will also look at specific approaches such as the Re-KYC project (for periodic and re-verification of customer information) developed by Bank of Maharashtra and examine the feasibility of scaling such initiatives and pursuing them through joint ventures," said one of the executives. Another bank executive said some of the collaborative initiatives, including a common collection firm to recover retail and MSME loans below ₹5 crore, are already being worked out. "While some of these will be pursued through PSB Alliance , we can also look at setting up other ventures, depending on the requirement," he said. Doorstep banking and a cloud infrastructure for PSBs are also being pursued, he added. The Bank Asset Auction Network (BAANKNET), through which properties are auctioned, is powered by PSB Alliance, which is set up by all PSBs to offer customer-oriented services jointly. After a review meeting of PSBs in June 2025, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had asked banks to proactively identify emerging commercial growth areas for the next decade and deepen corporate lending in productive sectors with a strong focus on maintaining robust underwriting and risk-management standards. Earlier this month, Indian Banks' Association (IBA) chief executive Atul Goel said that through Ease 7.0 in FY24-25, PSBs had accelerated generative artificial intelligence readiness and implemented pilot use cases, strengthened data governance and analytics, adopted cloud for scalable operations, and enabled digital operating models for cost efficiency and quality. As per an IBA report, under EASErise, the reform agenda for FY26, banks' core focus will be on fortifying the risk-management systems of PSBs, enhancing their capacity to absorb economic shocks and upholding financial stability.

Bengaluru Stampede: RCB Owner Discussing Sale Of IPL Franchise

According to Bloomberg, the alcohol company may seek a valuation of USD 2 billion and is currently in discussions with advisers. However, no final decision has been made, and it is possible that they may not sell the team. Currently, RCB is embroiled in a major controversy after an event organised by them to celebrate the franchise's IPL triumph turned tragic. A large crowd gathered outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to catch a glimpse of the RCB cricketers, with the franchise having announced a victory parade and felicitation. A stampede ensued outside the cricket stadium, resulting in the deaths of eleven people and injuries to several others. The incident sparked nationwide outrage, leading to the filing of an FIR against RCB, the event organiser DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association. Furthermore, before the start of IPL 2025, the Indian Ministry of Health issued an advisory urging the organisers of the popular cricket tournament to ban all tobacco and alcohol advertising, including surrogate promotions, during matches and broadcasts, citing public health concerns. The Director General of Health Services, Atul Goel, wrote in a letter to IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal, 'IPL should strictly implement the regulations banning all forms of tobacco/alcohol advertising, including surrogate advertisements, within the stadium premises where the games and related IPL events are held, as well as during telecast sessions on national television." RCB won the IPL championship for the first time in their history after defeating Punjab Kings in a thrilling final held in Ahmedabad last week.

After 33 years, Centre holds review meeting; long working hours for resident docs discussed

NEW DELHI: After 33 years, the centre held a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review and update the Central Residency Scheme, 1992. The meeting, chaired by the newly appointed Additional Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Dr Sunita Sharma, discussed issues such as hostel facilities, long working hours, and salaries of resident doctors - both junior and senior resident doctors - who form the backbone of government hospitals. 'We held the first meeting today and discussed various issues. We will meet again,' Dr Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), told this paper. He said no final decision was made on the issues that were taken up and that the ministry would give its final approval. However, various resident doctor associations claimed that their top demand of a fixed 48-hour per week working hours for resident doctors had been accepted. In the meeting, attended by directors of all major Delhi-based government hospitals, members of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and various representatives of all major resident doctors' associations, including FAIMA, FORDA, UDF, and IMA-JDN, various issues like hostel facilities, thesis grants, assistant professor salaries, and health benefits for postgraduate and senior resident doctors were discussed. Welcoming the move to hold the first meeting in three decades, Dr Rohan Krishnan, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) 's chief patron, said all their points were taken up. 'One of the crucial issues was the long working hours of senior and junior resident doctors. We had proposed that it should not exceed 48 hours a week with at least one off every week on a rotation basis. The ministry accepted this,' he said. 'The central residency scheme has not been revised since 1992. We feel resident doctors will be more comfortable in the safe working environment, leading to better patient care. If the basic needs of the resident doctors are met, then I think there would be better care for the patients,' he told this paper. He said FAIMA had made the demand with the central government to review the Central Residency Scheme during the RG Kar incident in which a postgraduate doctor was brutally raped and murdered in a government hospital in Kolkata last year. Dr Lakshya Mittal, National President of United Doctors' Front (UDF) on X, said it was a big win for resident doctors. "After today's DGHS meeting, it is confirmed 48 hours/week fixed duty hours will replace the vague term 'reasonable.' He also said the allowance revision was approved. Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson, Indian Medical Association (IMA)-Junior Doctors Network (IMA-JDN), said, 'It was a fruitful meeting, and they have taken note of all the concerns we raised, including ensuring 48 hours/week fixed duty hours for all resident doctors." "Allowances revision for doctors and fixed amount for thesis and books also approved in the meeting and taken further for implementation,' he told this paper.

India Asks Richest Cricket League to Ban Liquor, Tobacco Brands

India's health ministry wants to ban promotion of tobacco and alcohol brands in the world's most lucrative cricket tournament to curb the growing influence of sin goods makers, barely three weeks before the first match of this season. Indian Premier League, or IPL, should 'strictly' stop all forms of tobacco and alcohol advertising, including surrogate ads in the stadium premises as well as on television, Atul Goel, the Director General of Health Services, told Arun Singh Dhumal, the tournament's chair in a March 5 letter seen by Bloomberg News.
