England complete unbeaten tour with 40-5 rout of USA
Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore, Cadan Murley, Jack van Poortvliet, Harry Randall and Gabriel Oghre -- one of six players to earn his first cap in the match -- scored the tries as England backed up their two-Test series win over Argentina with a comfortable victory. Lightning delayed the match kickoff by about an hour and interrupted the contest in the 29th minute for a delay of about 40 minutes at Washington's Audi Field, home of MLS side DC United. "A lot of hard work," England captain George Ford said. "Conditions were difficult. I'm proud of the boys. It's the last day of a four-week tour for us. We won all three games. We had six new caps today. We're really proud of what they did and I'm proud of the group effort as a whole." England's win was their seventh straight international victory following their defeat to Ireland in February in their Six Nations opener. The English improved to 8-0 against the USA Eagles by winning only their second match on US soil. "It's always tough to face a tier one team," US captain Ben Bonasso said. "The boys, we still trust the process. We got a try at the end. We hope to keep on going." The Eagles defeated Belgium but lost to Spain in prior summer matches. "Facing this type of speed and collisions will make you better," Bonasso said. "We still have to qualify for the World Cup so this will help us down the road." The starting lineup featured previously uncapped Arthur Clark, Max Ojomoh and Joe Carpenter while substitutes Oghre, Charlie Atkinson and Oscar Beard also made England debuts. "It's massive. They have been huge all tour," Ford said. "They got their opportunities tonight but the way they have applied themselves and trained and prepared the team for the two games in Argentina was unbelievable. They deserved that. It's a proud moment for them." Also in England's lineup was Exeter Chiefs wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, who served a red-card ban for the two matches in South America but made his return against the Eagles. Fast start Chris Hilsenbeck of the Eagles was shown a yellow card in the ninth minute and England capitalized in the 11th minute, Langdon scoring the try from the back of a rolling maul. Northmore touched the ball down between the uprights off a pass from debutant Ojomoh in the 18th minute. Alex Dombrandt had what seemed to be a try in the 28th minute overturned on TMO review just before lightning halted the match in the 29th minute. After the resumption, Carpenter lost a try in his England debut on TMO review in the 37th minute but Murley scored a try on a cutback run on the final play of the first half to give England a 19-0 half-time lead. England scored again in the first minute of the second half as Van Poortvliet finished and Ford added another conversion. Harry Randall added a try in the 62nd minute following an impressive offload by Feyi-Waboso and Oghre added another try in the 74th minute with an Atkinson conversion making it 40-0. Shilo Klein grabbed a late consolation for the home side with a try in the final moments of the game.

England storm past USA after lightning delays
England shrugged off two lengthy delays caused by lightning in Washington DC to end their summer tour with a comprehensive 40-5 victory over the United States. After beating Argentina 2-0 in South America, the third game of England's tour at Audi Field kicked off an hour late due to an electrical storm in the American capital. Play was then halted near the half-hour mark, with both sets of players spending 40 minutes in the dressing room before the action resumed. England eventually ran out comfortable winners with six tries shared by Curtis Langdon, Luke Northmore, Cadan Murley, Jack van Poortvliet, Harry Randall and Gabriel Oghre. George Ford added four conversions and Charlie Atkinson one in a dominant display in which Harlequins flanker Chandler Cunningham-South was outstanding. The US had never beaten England in seven previous attempts, but began on the front foot and engineered some promising field positions. But the Eagles were reduced to 14 by a deliberate knock-on from outside-half Chris Hilsenbeck and England took instant advantage of their extra numbers with an 11th-minute try. Ford kicked to the corner and Langdon was the beneficiary of a driving line-out that the fly-half, winning his 102nd cap, converted. England soon worked another opening and new boy Max Ojomoh slipped in fellow centre Northmore for a simple score with Ford again adding the extras. Alex Dombrandt thought he had extended the lead from the back of a maul, but his effort was ruled out for obstruction and the players were then taken off the field after 29 minutes due to further lightning concerns. When they returned, lightning – this time in the metaphorical sense – struck twice for England as full-back Jack Carpenter was denied a debut try by a Murley knock-on. But England's patience was rewarded in the final play of the first half as Murley spotted a gap to race over. Van Poortvliet, showing his sound positional sense, went over straight after the restart for Ford to convert, and England were camped in the Americans' 22 for most of the second period. The hosts held out until Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, making his first appearance after six months out with a shoulder injury and a two-match ban for a high tackle that saw him miss the Argentina games, sliced through. The Exeter wing showed fine awareness to send Randall over, and Ford's final act before making way for Atkinson was to add another two points. England turned heavily to their bench in the final quarter, but there was no easing off and Bristol hooker Oghre celebrated his first cap with a burst to the line that Atkinson added to. The US were finally on the scoreboard in the final seconds as a well-worked ploy at the front of a line-out saw Chris Poidevin put Shilo Klein over for a consolation score.

I think he's on five or six caps now and so I'm massively proud of him."We lived in academy houses together, and then moved into town together before eventually splitting off to live with our partners. He's definitely my best mate in terms of rugby."To have someone that close to you doing it, it just pushes you to be better and get there with him."Unfortunately, he's not playing this weekend. It would have been cool to share the field with him in an England shirt."But, I'm hoping that time will come at some point." Carpenter faces considerable competition for the 15 Freddie Steward started both wins over Argentina earlier in the tour, while, in addition to Furbank and Smith, injured Lion Elliot Daly and Henry Arundell, back in England contention after moving to Bath, can also play the 23-year-old believes he is well suited to the attacking, opportunistic style that England want to play."For me there's a lot on kick return and beating the first man, which is a big focus here - getting the boys on the front foot," he said."That's massive. And also being that edge connection that gets the ball to the wingers. We have got Cadan [Murley] and Manny [Immanuel Feyi-Waboso] this weekend who are absolutely flying. I want those boys to get the ball."I get on with Freddie really well. It's great when that's the case because you can compete together, learn together and get better together."Freddie is an aerial beast, isn't he? That has been an area of my game over the past three years that I've been trying to match to his because obviously that's one of one of his USPs."And also how he carries the ball and his defensive work in the backfield - his positioning is always spot on." Even with Roebuck rested, Sale are the best-represented club in England's XV in Washington with fly-half George Ford and props Bevan Rodd and Asher Opoku-Fordjour alongside Curry is on the bench and, behind the scenes, Sale's defence coach Byron McGuigan and physio Nav Sandhu have been seconded to England's staff this lost to Steward's Leicester in the Premiership semi-finals in June, the fourth time in the past five seasons that they have reached the play-offs."I think that representation kind of reflects the last few seasons at Sale really," Carpenter added."All the lads and all the coaches have been fantastic here, but it is really good that we've got such a good crew of Sale boys here."Next year for us it is about how we can keep that consistency throughout the year and I think it will show with the boys here and the boys we have signed."Sale pair Tom Curry and Luke Cowan-Dickie are touring with the Lions this summer, while Raffi Quirke and Rekeiti Ma'asi-White are on England's fringes and second row Ben Bamber and hooker Nathan Jibulu have been involved with England A.
