‘I Paid $127:' Texas Woman Takes 2022 Audi Q3 to Jiffy Lube for Oil Change. Her Engine Was Busted Within the Hour
You go in for a basic oil change. Less than an hour later, your dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree, smoke pours from the hood, and your dream car's engine is toast. That's the nightmare one Audi Q3 owner says she lived through after a routine stop at Jiffy Lube. Texas-based creator Derrilynn (@purposeful_plans) shares all the details of her recent visit to an oil change shop in Spring, Texas, that she claims is at the root of $31,000 in damage to her vehicle. According to her video and written statement, the incident unfolded as follows: July 11, 2025: Derrilynn brings her Audi Q3 to a Jiffy Lube for a routine oil change. It's her first time visiting this shop. The service cost is $127 . After paying and leaving the location, she drives to a nearby CVS on Tidwell Road , where she shops briefly. 5:05 p.m.: Upon restarting the vehicle, multiple dashboard warning lights appear. She immediately calls the Jiffy Lube to report the issue. Jiffy Lube staff instruct her to return before it closes at 6 p.m. As she drives back, the car begins to smoke , prompting her to pull over at a nearby gas station. An hour later, a Jiffy Lube technician arrives and reportedly admits the oil dipstick was inserted backwards , making it difficult to remove. Derrilynn records the conversation on video. The vehicle is towed to Audi North Houston , where a diagnosis confirms catastrophic engine failure . The repair estimate is over $31,000 , according to Derrilynn. She also shares an image of her receipt , which lists the incorrect vehicle make , model, and oil quantity —reportedly 7 quarts, although a 2022 Audi Q3 typically holds only 5.5 quarts with filter, per Audi USA's service specifications. 'I am completely devastated right now,' she said in the clip. 'I had my dream car, my 2022 Audi Q3 that I worked so hard for. And I took it into Jiffy Lube for a routine oil change. It was my first time ever going there and within an hour of leaving the shop, my [expletive] engine was completely blown.' How Did the Mistakes Bust Her Engine? While dipstick design varies across engines, the 2022 Audi Q3, which is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, uses a shaped dipstick guide tube that is designed to prevent incorrect insertion. However, non-original equipment manufacturer (OEM) dipsticks or improper force could allow it to be inserted incorrectly . A backwards or jammed dipstick can disrupt oil flow or pressure readings, but that alone is unlikely to cause catastrophic failure unless paired with other errors, such as oil overfill, underfill, or contamination. Overfilling an engine with oil, especially by more than a quart, can increase internal pressure, cause foaming, oil aeration, or damage to seals and gaskets. In turbocharged engines like the Audi Q3's, excess oil can enter the intake system or clog the catalytic converter, potentially triggering engine knock, misfires, or worse. The correct oil quantity for the Q3's engine is approximately 5.5 quarts . If Derrilynn's receipt stating 7 quarts is accurate, the engine may have been overfilled by nearly 30%. If an engine is significantly overfilled or run without proper oil circulation (e.g., clogged filter, missing oil, or foamed oil), warning lights can appear within minutes. Continued driving in that state can lead to loss of lubrication, overheating, or hydrolock, especially in high-compression or turbocharged setups. Dealership vs. Quick-Lube Chains For many drivers, getting an oil change is a routine errand, often squeezed in during a lunch break or between weekend errands. That convenience is exactly why quick-lube chains like Jiffy Lube, Valvoline Instant Oil Change, and Take 5 are so popular. These businesses are designed for speed: Pull in, stay in your car, and drive out 20 minutes later with fresh oil. But convenience can come with trade-offs, especially for owners of modern, turbocharged, or luxury vehicles like the Audi Q3. Quick-lube shops often staff entry-level technicians , some of whom may be new to the job or lack brand-specific training. Procedures are typically generalized to accommodate a wide variety of vehicles, and while technicians may follow checklists, they may not be familiar with vehicle-specific torque specs, service bulletins, or OEM oil formulations. In contrast, dealership service departments and certified independent Euro shops: Use OEM filters and fluids tailored to your vehicle's make and model. Have access to technical service bulletins (TSBs) and software updates. Employ factory-trained techs who know what can go wrong and how to prevent it. Are often held to more stringent quality and liability standards. For vehicles with tight tolerances, advanced sensors, or turbocharging systems, minor service mistakes like overfilling oil, under-torquing a drain plug, or using the wrong viscosity can quickly lead to drivability issues or engine damage. Jiffy Lube, like many national chains, operates under a franchise model . This means each location is independently owned and operated, so the quality of service can vary widely. Some franchises maintain rigorous quality control, while others may cut corners or rely on inexperienced staff. How to Choose Wisely If you're deciding between a quick-lube shop and a dealership or a trusted independent mechanic, here are a few tips to minimize risk: Know Your Car's Needs: Some vehicles require specific oil types (e.g., VW 508 00 for newer Audis), filter designs, or reset procedures. Review your owner's manual or check with your dealer. Check Reviews by Location: Don't rely solely on brand reputation. Look up Google, Yelp, or Better Business Bureau (BBB) reviews for the specific shop you plan to visit. Search for complaints about improper service, missing caps, or engine issues. Ask Questions Before Service: A reputable shop should be able to confirm your vehicle's required oil type and quantity, and answer basic questions about your engine. If it can't—or gives vague answers—that's a red flag. Keep Records: Always save your service receipt. Make sure it includes the correct year, make, model, VIN, and service details. Inaccurate receipts can complicate any warranty or insurance claims. Consider the Cost of Mistakes: Dealership oil changes may cost more upfront ($150+ vs. $70–$100), but for high-performance or luxury vehicles, the peace of mind and lower long-term risk can be worth it. Visteon Q2 net income falls amid slowed EV production and decrease in China demand
Visteon Corp., a global supplier of electronics and vehicle connectivity parts, said second-quarter net income fell 8.45 percent to $65 million because of lower electric vehicle production and a decrease in demand from China customers. Revenue fell to $969 million, down $45 million from the second quarter of last year. 'Net sales of $969 million came in higher than we had anticipated at the beginning of the quarter, driven by strong demand for our digital content products, particularly in North America and Europe,' CEO Sachin Lawande said during the company's call with analysts July 24. 'Despite the robust sales performance, lower [battery management systems] sales in the U.S. and the ongoing market dynamics in China resulted in sales slightly underperforming customer vehicle production.' Sign up for Automotive News breaking news alerts and be the first to know when big news happens. Lawande said future sales will depend on how automakers react to the elimination of the U.S. EV tax credit, set to take effect Sept. 30. Visteon was able to emerge relatively unscathed by tariff costs that have affected other companies, as the vast majority of its products are compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement currently not subject to tariffs. The company secured $2 billion in new business in the second quarter, bringing the year-to-date total to $3.9 billion. Visteon launched 21 products across eight automakers, with key products including a 25-inch display for the Audi Q3 platform in Europe and SmartCore domain controller programs for the Volvo EX30 electric crossover, Volvo construction vehicles and the Polestar 5. Visteon shares closed up 0.83 percent on July 24. Visteon, of Van Buren Township, Mich., ranks No. 59 on Automotive News' list of top 100 global suppliers, with $3.9 billion in parts sales to automakers in 2024. Used luxury car sales jump 30% in tier 2 cities; 80% buys now digital
Used luxury car demand rose by over 30 per cent in cities like Jaipur, Coimbatore, and Kochi, showed data released by used-car platform Spinny. According to Spinny's April-June quarter report, Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes GLA were the top luxury models sold. Metro-based repeat buyers continued to lead overall luxury sales, but non-metro demand showed a faster rate of growth this quarter. Moreover,a significant portion of customers are now purchasing vehicles online. Spinny reported that 80 per cent of its car sales in Q2 were made through online bookings, compared to 77 per cent in Q1. However, 80 per cent of deliveries took place at Spinny hubs rather than through home drop-offs, indicating that while buyers are transacting digitally, many still prefer to inspect vehicles in person before final handover. First-time buyers comprised 70 per cent of total customers, down from 74 per cent in the previous quarter. The average buyer age increased from 32 to 34 years. This points to a marginal rise in more experienced, returning customers opting for upgrades. On the seller side, hatchbacks made up 55 per cent of the total inventory, led by Maruti Suzuki's WagonR, Baleno, and Swift. SUVs accounted for 21 per cent, with higher share in Chennai. Sedans contributed 18 per cent with Chandigarh leading in this segment. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai retained the top two brand positions. Tata Motors replaced Honda in third place. Petrol vehicles accounted for 82 per cent of all sales. Automatic transmissions formed 30 per cent of Q2 purchases, marginally up from Q1. Diesel saw a higher share in Bengaluru around 28 per cent while early interest in EVs and hybrids was observed in Pune and Bengaluru. Women accounted for 26 per cent of total buyers in Q2, down from 28 per cent in Q1. Chandigarh reported the highest female buyer share at over 30 per cent. Most women opted for automatic hatchbacks, and Spinny highlighted the role of financing schemes in supporting this segment. Around 58 per cent of customers chose loan financing, up slightly from Q1. Coimbatore recorded the highest loan adoption at over 65 per cent. Demand for extended warranty coverage also rose, with a 30 per cent attach rate for the Assured+ program by June. Cars under three years of age made up 25 per cent of all vehicles sold in June, rising from 18 per cent in April. The trend was linked to warranty-backed offerings in Spinny's portfolio. Spinny's data also showed that Bengaluru recorded the fastest overall market growth. Chandigarh had the highest share of women buyers, while Kochi led in home deliveries, with over 40 per cent of customers opting for doorstep handovers. Jaipur had the youngest average buyer age at 31 years. Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad continued to be the top markets by overall sales volume. Spinny expects demand to rise further during Onam and Diwali. The company forecasts increased reliance on financing, a steady rise in digital transactions, and more activity in the EV and hybrid segments. Spinny is a used car retail platform operating in 22 cities with 57 delivery hubs. It offers a mix of online and offline services, including 200-point vehicle inspections, return policies, and warranty plans.

Outgoing Audi Q3 a sensational drive; the new generation will bring better features
Audi expanded its popular Q3 range in September 2024 to include diesel variants that have two-litre turbocharged diesel engines and some mild upgrades. The German manufacturer also revealed the new generation Q3 in June, which will go on sale in Europe later this year and in South Africa in 2026. The Mail & Guardian had the outgoing Audi Q3 35TDI Sportback Black Edition on test for a week and it was the perfect appetiser to get us ready for the new Q3. The Q3 Black Edition is an attractive car from the outside. We had it in pulse orange, which might not work on other vehicles but really allows the external features of the Q3 to burst into life. The black exterior mirror housing and blacked out badges also make the vehicle pop a little bit more than the regular TDI and TFSI variants. The drive It's difficult to fight German engineering when it comes to drivetrains. The Audi Q3 35TDI variants are no different. The two litre turbocharged engine is tied to Audi's seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and pushes out 110kW of power and 340Nm of torque. The Q3 features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a four-link rear axle with separate spring and damper arrangement. Audi drive select also allows the driver to adjust the suspension for different driving modes. The engine, gearbox and the suspension make the drive capable and comfortable. It also feels extremely smooth and the high torque figure makes overtaking very easy. Travelling along various highways in Gauteng, and as comfortable as I was driving this vehicle, it was also a lot of fun to drive. Because of the compact nature of the Q3, the bendy highways were a breeze and allowed me to express myself. Audi claims a fuel figure of 4.9 litres/100km. I managed 5.5 litres/100km, but also had to endure some terrible traffic on the N1 which didn't help that figure at all. I was really impressed. I was even more impressed when I saw that the new Q3 will feature an improved suspension and a diesel plug-in hybrid that will provide 119km full electric driving range. The new Q3 will also be available in an all-wheel-drive variant. Interior and safety The interior had the sporty feel that you would expect from the Audi Q3 Black Edition, but there were certain aspects that I felt needed work. For starters, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were only available on a wired connection, so I had to make sure that I dragged my USB into the vehicle at all times. The only other complaint I had is the vehicle lacked atmosphere on the inside. For such a sporty and compact looking vehicle, the interior felt plain. But I will give Audi props for keeping buttons below the infotainment system and making it simple for the driver. The sport steering wheel and sport seats make the interior extremely comfortable as well. After seeing the interior of the new Q3 that is coming next year, I have no worries that Audi has intentions to make that interior more exciting and with nicer dash and door materials, even more drivercentric and more technologically advanced. The old gear shift will also be updated to make the cabin more pleasing to the eye. In terms of safety, the Audi Q3 has an array of features such as a rear-view camera, parking aid plus and six airbags. Verdict and looking forward The outgoing Q3 was really about a seamless driving experience that also included fun dynamics, but I felt the interior of the vehicle did not keep up with the vibrant exterior. The incoming Q3 looks like it does a much better job at matching the interior and exterior and is likely to be an exciting prospect for South Africans. The current Audi Q3 is priced from R740 100 and the 35TDI Sportback Black Edition that was tested comes in at R934 050.
