Aurora firefighters, 911 dispatcher help grandmother save 8-year-old girl
Emergency dispatchers are on the receiving end of the worst days of people's lives. They rarely know what happens after that call ends, let alone get to meet them. In Aurora -- a city of over 400,000 people -- one call, one voice, and one grandmother's love made all the difference. When 8-year-old Gloria collapsed, her grandmother didn't panic; she acted. Charisse Huggins immediately began CPR while on the phone with Aurora911. What unfolded over the next few minutes was nothing short of a miracle. "I started compressions right then and there," said Charisse. "I didn't think. I just did what I had to do." Gloria received her new heart just shy of her first birthday. That morning in January, she had no symptoms before collapsing. She simply sat up in bed and said, "Meemaw, my head hurts." Moments later, she fell backward. Gloria's cardiac arrest lasted nearly an hour. Against all odds, she survived. It's a call Aurora 911 dispatcher Rosie Deichsel won't forget. "Charisse was calm, unbelievably calm," Deichsel said about Huggins. "I like being on the other side of the phone, you know, that's where I belong." Charisse, who had cared for Gloria since birth, knew CPR from years of navigating her granddaughter's complex medical needs. But even for her, the weight of the moment was overwhelming. "You're never really prepared," she admitted. "But there was a soft voice on the other end of the phone. Deichsel kept me grounded. She kept me going." Deichsel says dispatchers rarely get to meet the people they help, but this reunion was unforgettable. "This is one of those calls I'll carry with me forever," she said. "We don't always get happy endings. But this one? This one was special." First responders from Aurora Fire Rescue arrived within minutes, taking over resuscitation and transporting Gloria to Children's Hospital Colorado. She lost her pulse again en route, requiring CPR to resume. Gloria was twice placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, a specialized form of life support for both the heart and lungs. Doctors estimated her chance of survival at less than 4%. She was on life support for two weeks. She fought her way back. The family was able to thank the team who helped save her life in person. Phoenix Awards are joint recognitions presented by public safety agencies to honor the team members directly involved in saving the life of a citizen who is ultimately discharged from the hospital neurologically intact. "This award is about the system," said AFR leadership during the Phoenix Award ceremony. "From the 911 call to the hospital doors, every link in the chain matters." Aurora firefighters and a 911 dispatcher pose with a family after helping a grandmother save her 8-year-old granddaughter's life. CBS Charisse now urges all parents and caregivers -- especially grandparents -- to learn CPR. "This is a great day," she said. "You didn't just save a child. You gave my granddaughter her future back."

Trinity Summer Series 2025: Stage times, set list, ticket information, how to get there and more
The Trinity Summer Series kicks off this week, with the Norwegian electropop artist Aurora headlining the first of seven nights of music in Dublin city centre. Thousands of people will descend on the Trinity College campus to attend the run of gigs, which has been in place since 2017. Read on to prepare yourself for the events. Who is playing? Sunday, June 29th: Aurora with support from Jack Kane Monday, June 30th: The Teskey Brothers with support from The Heavy Heavy Tuesday, July 1st: Simple Minds with support from KT Tunstall Wednesday, July 2nd: Weezer with support from Teen Mortgage Thursday, July 3rd: Rag'n'Bone Man with support from Simple Things Saturday, July 5th: Amble with support from David Keenan Sunday, July 6th: Marti Pellow with support from Wallis Bird What time should I arrive? Gates open at 7pm, with the show starting at 7.30pm. Organisers aim to avoid queues outside the venue, so attendees should arrive 30 minutes before the show starts. Remember to give yourself an extra two hours of travel time, as delays around traffic and entry are inevitable. How do I get to and from the gig? Trinity College Dublin is located at College Green, in the middle of the city. You can enter the campus at the Lincoln Place, on Nassau Street/Westland Row; or via the Science Gallery gate, on Westland Row/Pearse Street. READ MORE As traffic is guaranteed, you are advised to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the venue. Fortunately, the campus is highly accessible given its location. Travel by bus: Dublin Bus offer a wide range of routes that service TCD. The 11, 37, 38 (A/D), 39(A) and 70 buses all stop at Nassau Street, which is a five-minute walk from the entrance. You can plan your journey with Transport for Ireland here . Travel by Dart: The nearest Dart station to TCD is Pearse Street, which is just over a 10-minute walk from the site entrance. The latest trains should be leaving Pearse Street around 11.30pm on the night. Travel by Luas: The Luas green line stops at Dawson Street both northbound and southbound, which is only a five-minute walk from the TCD entry. The northbound Luas also stops at Trinity directly. Travel by car: There is no public parking in place for the Trinity Summer Series, and organisers advise attendees not to park illegally or in residential areas. If you must drive to the gig, utilise one of the city centre car parks and look to book a space in advance. Are there any tickets left? Tickets for the full list of concerts are available to purchase on Ticketmaster here . Several gigs are already sold out, but it is worth checking the site for resale tickets in case you get lucky. There is a box office at the concert entrance. Remember to download your tickets to your phone as there may be internet or connectivity issues at the venue, and with Ticketmaster's live barcodes, screenshots may not work on the day. What is security like? The events are strictly over-18s. Bring an official form of identification with you: a passport, Garda age card or driver's licence. Security checks will be in operation, and everyone will be subject to a search. You are advised not to bring large bags/backpacks, as you may experience delays or be refused entry. Flag poles, glass or cans, umbrellas, alcohol, e-scooters/e-bikes, flares, professional cameras and audio recording equipment will not be permitted. What does the weather look like? Met Éireann says temperatures are expected to be around average for early July, which means there should warm evenings throughout the week. There may be some rainfall, so packing a light jacket or poncho would be wise. A full forecast can be found here . Trinity is a standing, outdoor venue, so consider wearing boots or runners.

Aurora woman visits husband at ICE detention facility, learns he was sent for deportation
An Aurora wife and mother is speaking out after learning her husband could be deported in the coming days, following a visit to the Aurora ICE detention center. "His life is on the line," said Alexandria Dowell, "and we have a daughter. She cannot see her dad anymore. What does that mean for us?" Ariel Cruz Penton and Alexandria Dowell with their daughter Alexandria Dowell Dowell, 27, met her husband, 34-year-old Ariel Cruz Penton, when she was vacationing in Miami roughly four years ago. Penton had already been living and working in the U.S. after fleeing Cuba as a political refugee. "My husband came to the U.S. about seven years ago. When he came to the border, he presented himself and pleaded political asylum," said Dowell. Penton's attorney, Carlos Dantes, tells CBS Colorado that federal agents coerced the Cuban migrant into signing documents that he didn't know would end his right to humanitarian parole after entering the U.S. That parole would've given him temporary permission to stay in the U.S., which is required under the Cuban Adjustment Act, while he filed for an asylum claim. Under this act, Dantes says his client would have eventually been granted residency. Instead, he received a deportation order. CBS Dowell says they have been actively fighting to reopen his case and get him a green card. They also filed for citizenship through their marriage nearly a year and a half ago. "We had our immigration meeting about three weeks prior to him being detained, and then we even had another one scheduled in the books," she said. "So, we had every reason to believe that we were going to be okay." Their worst nightmare became a reality on June 10. On the same date, thousands took to the streets across the country in anti-ICE demonstrations, and federal agents detained Penton while working. "I don't know if they were following him, how they found him, but three unmarked cars just came up, cornered their cars in, had him get out of the car and arrested him. And it makes no sense why someone with no criminal background or even a speeding ticket would need that much force to be taken and detained," said Dowell. "He works really hard, we pay our taxes, we also own a home and we're a family. We're married, I'm U.S. born, our daughter is U.S. born, so we have everything on paper that should help us through this process, and yet the system has failed us." "We are waiting to speak to another deportation officer, and seeing if we can get a hearing as soon as possible," said Dantes. On Friday, June 27, Dowell took CBS Colorado with her on her family's visit to the detention center to meet and speak with her husband. However, she was not prepared to find out Penton was not only removed from the facility that morning, but that he was already being scheduled for deportation. Ariel Cruz Penton and his daughter Alexandria Dowell "What am I going to do? That's my husband," said Dowell. "But I can't do anything, and I have to be strong for my daughter." Neither Dowell nor Dantes were notified about his removal from the facility, and it wasn't until after calling multiple detention facilities and Penton's detention officer, they finally learned he was sent to El Paso and is already on the list to be deported. "Him being detained is a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong set of documents," said Dantes. "Even though there is a petition on her behalf for him. But what we're seeing right now is that none of this matters." All the emotions Dowell has worked to suppress over the last few weeks have now reached a tipping point. "They said he'll be out of the U.S. today or tomorrow, and I'm like, where? He's a political refugee; you can't just take him. He's waiting for his credible fear interview," said Dowell. We asked ICE numerous questions about Penton's case, including why he was detained and why loved ones were not notified about his removal from the facility on Friday. A spokesperson told us they would need more time to answer those questions. "I just wish I could see him again," said Dowell. Dowell hopes her story will show others the reality of families like hers who are being ripped apart. "It feels like no one is safe at this point, and that's the scary part," said Dowell. Dowell and Dantes are still looking for ways to prevent Penton from being deported, especially to Cuba.
