India posted a total of 587 runs in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test and declared their second innings after scoring 427 runs in 83 overs for the loss of six wickets. Shubman Gill scored 161 runs from 162 balls on Thursday (July 5) to help India declare their second innings at 427/6 in 83 overs. India's total of 427 runs in the second innings, in addition to 587 in the first innings, helped them cross the 1000-run mark in a Test match for the first time ever. Only four teams on five occasions before India managed to score 1000 or more runs in a Test match. The overall record of scoring the most runs in a Test match is held by England. During the 1930 Kingston Test played against the West Indies team, England amassed a total of 1121 runs. In that red-ball match, England posted a total of 849 runs in the first innings and declared after scoring 272 runs for the loss of nine wickets in the second. 1000-plus team aggregates in a Test India's previous highest team total in a Test was 916 against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2004. Gill creates history Gill's super show with the bat on Saturday helped him break numerous batting records. A total of 430 runs in the second Test against England helped Gill take the No. 1 position in the list of batters with the most runs in a Test match played away from home. He broke Mark Taylor's record. During the 1998 Australia-Pakistan Test in Peshawar, Taylor amassed a total of 426 runs for the Baggy Greens. Only former England captain and star batter Graham Gooch has now scored more runs in a Test match than Gill. During the 1990 India-England Test at Lord's, Gooch scored 333 runs in the first innings and 123 runs in the second. Gill is the first Indian and overall fifth batter in the world after Gooch, Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, and Brian Lara to score 400 runs in a Test match. Gill, who was appointed as India's 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, scored 269 runs from 387 balls in the first innings. Gill is also the second captain in the world after Virat Kohli to score three centuries in two Tests. Location : Birmingham First Published: July 05, 2025, 22:05 IST

Shubman Gill Breaks World Record Of Scoring Most Runs In A Test By Visiting Batter
Last Updated: Gill scored 430 runs (1st and 2nd innings combined) for India in the second Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Shubman Gill now holds the record of scoring the most runs in a Test match by a visiting batter. The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab broke former Australian captain and star batter Mark Taylor's record of 326 runs. During the 1998 Australia-Pakistan Test in Peshawar, Taylor amassed a total of 426 runs. He remained unbeaten on 334 in the first innings and scored 92 in the second. Gill, on the other hand, scored 269 runs in the first innings of the Edgbaston Test against England and 161 runs in the second. Only Graham Gooch of England has scored more runs in a Test match than Gill. During the 1990 Lord's Test played between India and England, Gooch amassed a total of 456 runs against the Mohammad Azharuddin-led side. In that match, Gooch scored 333 runs in the first innings and 123 in the second. The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab is the fifth batter in the world after England's Graham Gooch, Australia's Mark Taylor, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, and the West Indies' Brian Lara to score 400 runs in a Test match. During his stay at the crease in the second innings, Gill faced 162 balls and hammered 13 fours and 8 sixes. He added 110 runs for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant (65) and 175 runs for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja, who has also crossed the fifty-run mark. Gill is the first batter in the world to score a double century and 150 runs in one Test match and overall the second batter after Allan Border of Australia to score at least 150 runs in both innings of a Test match. During the Australia-Pakistan Test match played in Lahore in 1980, Border remained unbeaten on 150 runs in the first innings and scored 153 in the second. Shubman Gill Becomes 1st Indian Cricketer To Score 400 Runs In A Test Match
Last Updated: Gill becomes the first Indian and overall fifth batter in the world, after Graham Gooch, Mark Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, and Brian Lara, to score 400 runs in a Test match. Shubman Gill is in the form of his life these days, and he is making the most of it. After scoring 147 runs against England in the first innings of the Leeds Test (June 20-24) and 269 runs in the first Test of the Edgbaston Test, Gill scored his third century in four innings as India Test captain on Saturday (July 5). After coming out to bat at No. 4 for India in the morning session of the fourth day's play of the second Test in Birmingham, Gill crossed the 100-run mark by taking a single on the third ball of the 67th over of India's innings bowled by Shoaib Bashir. After equalling Virat Kohli's world record of scoring three centuries in the first two Tests as captain, Gill became the first Indian batter to score 400 runs in one Test match. He achieved the feat by reaching the 131-run mark in the second innings of the 2nd Test (smacked Joe Root for a six on the first ball of 78th over when he was batting on 130). The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab is the fifth batter in the world after England's Graham Gooch, Australia's Mark Taylor, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, and the West Indies' Brian Lara to score 400 runs in a Test match. If Gill manages to score at least 188 runs in the second innings, then he will break Graham Gooch's record of scoring the most runs in a Test match. And if India's Test captain manages to score a double century in the second innings as well, then he will become the first cricketer in the world to score two double centuries in one Test match. The overall record of scoring the most runs in a Test match away from home is in the name of former Australian batter Mark Taylor. During the Australia-Pakistan Test match in Peshawar in 1998, Taylor amassed a total of 426 (334 and 92) runs. First Published:
