Smith set to return in the Grenada Test
St. George's(Greneda), July 3, (UNI) Australia batsman Steve Smith has recovered from his finger injury an will return to the side's playing XI for the second Test against the West indies in Grenada. Skipper Pat Cummins revealed the return of Smith less than 24 hours out from the clash at the National Cricket Stadium, with Josh Inglis the player to make way for the Australian veteran. Smith batted without pain while wearing a splint on Tuesday and Cummins said there was no reason to leave the 36-year-old out of the playing XI. "He's ready to go, the finger held up well," Cummins said of Smith. "He was really happy, particularly batting. "Fielding we still potentially need to manage it a little bit, so he might not be in the slips too often – maybe for spin he'll be OK, but (for the) quicks he might need to wait another week. "So you might see him running around a bit more … probably some variation of mid-off and fine leg, (but) we'll see if he lasts a few days down at fine leg, I reckon he'll be itching to get up in the circle pretty quick." The return of Smith is the only change to the Australian team that defeated the West Indies by 159 runs in the opening Test of the series, while the Caribbean side confirmed they will wait until the toss before locking in their final XI. The West Indies are deciding whether to include an extra seamer in their line-up, with left-armer Anderson Phillip a chance to play make his third Test appearance in Grenada in place of spinner and vice-captain Jomel Warrican. One player certain to feature for the West Indies in the clash is experienced opener Kraigg Brathwaite, who will become just the 10th player from the Caribbean side to make 100 Test appearances. Brathwaite has been a mainstay in the West Indies' red-ball setup since he made his Test debut back in 2011 and skipper Roston Chase paid tribute to the longevity of the 32-year-old. "It's an amazing feat, he's the third Bajan player to do it so that's tremendous in itself," Chase said. "The last guy to do it (for West Indies) was Chris Gayle in 2014, so it says a lot for Kraigg. "He's a modern-day legend and someone I look up to – I've played with him from under-11s. "He stated before starting his career that he wanted to play 100 Tests so that's an amazing achievement that someone can set a goal from so early and achieve it after so many years." Australia XI for second Test: Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood West Indies squad: Roston Chase (c), Jomel Warrican (vc), Kevlon Anderson, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Mikyle Louis, Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales UNI RKM

Smith return confirmed as Aussies reveal XI for Grenada Test ICC World Test Championship

West Indies, Australia lock in playing XIs for first Test
That means there is no spot in the XI for back-up spinner Matt Kuhnemann, with Cummins instead deciding to stick with the three-pronged pace attack that has served the side so well during the last World Test Championship cycle. "Coming over here with a few unknowns, that's fine, you have to think on your feet. We feel like the three quicks are better suited for this wicket." Cummins said. Cummins said he wanted to give Green an extended run at No.3 to provide a bit more stability to the batting line-up. "I always like to not have too many moving parts," Cummins added. "We see that (Green at No. 3) as a long-term option. I think going into last week he's hitting the ball really well, he's moving really well. "He had a Test match where it obviously didn't go to plan. Think he only faced three or four balls, so the message is not to look into that too much. We're really happy with where his game's placed and I dare say we'll get a decent run of number three." West Indies XI: 1. Kraigg Brathwaite, 2. John Campbell, 3. Keacy Carty, 4. Brandon King, 5. Roston Chase (c), 6. Shai Hope (wk), 7. Justin Greaves, 8. Jomel Warrican, 9. Alzarri Joseph, 10. Shamar Joseph, 11. Jayden Seales Australia XI: 1. Usman Khawaja, 2. Sam Konstas, 3. Cameron Green, 4. Australia win-loss record in ICC finals: Can South Africa inflict rare defeat in WTC 2025?
Pat Cummins' Australia are on the brink of enduring a feeling that has not been experienced by a bunch of serial winners for over a decade. The senior core of Australia's ICC World Test Championship 2025 final playing XI against South Africa at Lord's have not suffered a defeat in an ICC tournament final, across formats. For Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Steve Smith have won every final Australia have contested in the last decade, including the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cups, the 2021 T20 World Cup, and the last ICC World Test Championship final against India in 2023. For cricket's most successful international team, losing finals or ICC finals for that matter has been a rarefied event that their former captain Smith might be the first and only Australian player thus far to be part of two ICC finals defeats. Starting as a leg-spinning all-rounder, Smith was part of Australia's last finals defeat during the T20 World Cup 2010 against England in Barbados. Batting first, Australia could only gather 147 runs in 20 overs before England romped to a seven-wicket victory to mark their first ICC title triumph under the leadership of Paul Collingwood. Smith is the only member from that Australia XI to be part of the WTC 2025 final, staring at the possibility of defeat to South Africa while attempting to defend 281 runs. South Africa are 69 runs away from victory and inflicting a rare defeat to the Aussies in the ICC finals, one that has only occurred once since 2001 and twice in the previous century. Having won 10 ICC titles across formats, Australia's first defeat came in their maiden ICC final appearance, taking on the mighty West Indies in the first men's World Cup final in 1975. A Mark Taylor-led unit also missed out on winning the 1996 World Cup, losing to a belligerent Sri Lankan side, led by Aravinda de Silva's century in the final in Lahore. A defeat to South Africa will spell the end to a 15-year spotless record and only a fourth loss across 14 ICC finals in 50 years.
