How Honda's hybrid can save you time and money

On that topic, according to the latest census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) taken in 2021, more than half (53.1%) of working Australians drive a vehicle to work every day. This, however, is likely to be an anomaly as the ABS recognised the 2021 data is the lowest figure in 40 years, and significantly less than the highest 63 per cent result from the previous 2016 census, most likely due to the dramatic rise in stay-at-home work that was in place during the COVID crisis at the time. Either way, it's clear that the majority of Australians use a vehicle to get to work every day, with twice as many (6.4 million) vehicles on our roads in 2021 than there were in 1981 (3.2 million). According to the same census data, the national average commute from home to work is 16.5km each way, with drivers spending a total of 48 minutes behind the wheel every weekday. With all of that in mind, we set up a daily schedule to complete a consistent loop during peak-hour traffic between 4:30pm and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, which included a broad range of urban driving conditions. The route measured a total of 32.1km – replicating that average daily commuting figure – starting from the suburbs before heading into the CBD and back, taking in arterial roads with an 80km/h speed, suburban streets with 60km/h and 50km/h limits, and dense urban streets with a maximum speed of 40km/h. Across that distance, there was a total of 49 traffic lights, seven roundabouts and four stop-sign intersections. So, there were plenty of stop-start events. As for the car itself, the Honda Civic is now exclusively available as hybrid model, with two variant choices: the entry-level L we're using for this test, which costs $47,990 drive-away, and the flagship LX that commands a $6000 premium in exchange for extra features. Both model grades share the same high-tech hybrid powertrain, which links a lean-burning 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder engine with a CVT automatic transmission that incorporates a pair of electric motors; one that is primarily used a generator to recharge the 1.0kWh lithium-ion battery mounted under the rear seats, and a more powerful traction motor that assists the petrol engine when driving. The engine alone generates 105kW of power and 186Nm of torque, and while Honda does not quote separate outputs for the electric motors like other automakers, its says the powertrain has a combined maximum power output of 135kW and 315Nm of torque. In most situations, the powertrain acts like a regular series-parallel hybrid with the primary electric motor used to get things moving away from a standstill, before the petrol engine chimes in and they work together. The generator unit is used to recharge the battery pack through regenerative braking and under deceleration, but it can also reverse its flow and provide additional power under heavy acceleration. However, unlike some other systems, the Honda can also decouple the petrol engine at cruising speeds and run entirely on electricity. Now, because the battery capacity is reasonably small, it can't do this for long durations like a plug-in hybrid would. But it does make a significant improvement to its fuel consumption, as Honda claims an average fuel consumption of just 4.2L/100km. With a 40-litre fuel tank, that should deliver a theoretical driving distance of around 950km between refills, which means it would take almost six weeks of Monday-to-Friday commuting before we needed to visit a petrol station again. Sounds too good to be true. However, when filling the Civic for the first time, and resetting the trip computer, its digital dashboard indicated I could travel 752km on a single tank, which seems a little more realistic. And we still had more than 50km of driving range available before it was completely empty. In total, it took 21 days, and 13.5 hours, of driving at an average speed of just under 50km/h to achieve a final fuel consumption figure of 4.4L/100km, which is pretty close to Honda's claimed figure. So, that equals a full month between visits to the petrol station for the average Australian if you just drive to work and back. It would be even longer if you live closer or had less congested traffic. If you calculate that out, with the current price of standard unleaded petrol, it costs around $800 a year for fuel to run the Civic Hybrid, which is peanuts. And considering Honda only charges $199 for each annual service, that makes it even more attractive. And we still had more than 50km of driving range available before it was completely empty. In total, it took 21 days, and 13.5 hours, of driving at an average speed of just under 50km/h to achieve a final fuel consumption figure of 4.4L/100km, which is pretty close to Honda's claimed figure. So, that equals a full month between visits to the petrol station for the average Australian if you just drive to work and back. It would be even longer if you live closer or had less congested traffic. If you calculate that out, with the current price of standard unleaded petrol, it costs around $800 a year for fuel to run the Civic Hybrid, which is peanuts. And considering Honda only charges $199 for each annual service, that makes it even more attractive. So, if you want to steer clear of petrol stations more often, the latest petrol-electric powertrains like the one in the Honda Civic e:HEV are proof that fuel-saving technology also saves you time and money. Traders, economists and mortgage holders will be locked into the Australian Bureau of Statistics website this week for a piece of data that could determine whether the Reserve Bank cuts interest rates next month. Minutes from the RBA board's last meeting confirmed the central bank was holding out for more signs inflation was on track before cutting again, highlighting the importance of Wednesday's quarterly consumer price index. AMP chief economist Shane Oliver believes an annualised result of 2.8 per cent or below for the RBA's preferred trimmed mean measure would clear the way for another rate cut in its August 11-12 meeting. But anything higher and we could be in for another hold. Dr Oliver predicts the trimmed mean will come in at 2.6 per cent year-on-year, down from the 2.9 per cent figure in the March quarter and close to the midpoint of the RBA's 2-3 per cent target range. "Expect solid increases in prices for clothing, health and travel with a modest rise in new dwelling costs offset by softness in transport and petrol prices, communication, education and insurance," he wrote in a research note. "However, as the RBA has noted, some of the components in the recent monthly CPI suggest upside risk to the trimmed mean inflation." The market consensus is for a rise of 2.7 per cent, which would be higher than the RBA's forecast of 2.6 per cent. Even higher than that and it could cause the market to rethink its near certain odds of an August rate cut. "The money market sees a 98 per cent chance of an August rate cut, which is probably a bit too high," Dr Oliver said. "We would put it at around 80 per cent." On Thursday, economists will gorge on a feast of data as the ABS releases retail trade, building approvals and international trade price figures. The retail print is the last the bureau will produce before it switches over to a more comprehensive measure of consumption, the monthly household spending indicator. "Appropriately, monthly sales look set for one 'last hurrah' with the June update expected to see a robust one per cent gain - the best monthly result since Jan 2024," said economists from Westpac. But the gain mainly reflects a bounce back from soft sales in previous months, they said, as consumers struggle to gain momentum following the loss of purchasing power during the post-pandemic inflation spike. On that topic, according to the latest census data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) taken in 2021, more than half (53.1%) of working Australians drive a vehicle to work every day. This, however, is likely to be an anomaly as the ABS recognised the 2021 data is the lowest figure in 40 years, and significantly less than the highest 63 per cent result from the previous 2016 census, most likely due to the dramatic rise in stay-at-home work that was in place during the COVID crisis at the time. Either way, it's clear that the majority of Australians use a vehicle to get to work every day, with twice as many (6.4 million) vehicles on our roads in 2021 than there were in 1981 (3.2 million). According to the same census data, the national average commute from home to work is 16.5km each way, with drivers spending a total of 48 minutes behind the wheel every weekday. With all of that in mind, we set up a daily schedule to complete a consistent loop during peak-hour traffic between 4:30pm and 6:00pm Monday to Friday, which included a broad range of urban driving conditions. The route measured a total of 32.1km – replicating that average daily commuting figure – starting from the suburbs before heading into the CBD and back, taking in arterial roads with an 80km/h speed, suburban streets with 60km/h and 50km/h limits, and dense urban streets with a maximum speed of 40km/h. Across that distance, there was a total of 49 traffic lights, seven roundabouts and four stop-sign intersections. So, there were plenty of stop-start events. As for the car itself, the Honda Civic is now exclusively available as hybrid model, with two variant choices: the entry-level L we're using for this test, which costs $47,990 drive-away, and the flagship LX that commands a $6000 premium in exchange for extra features. Both model grades share the same high-tech hybrid powertrain, which links a lean-burning 2.0-litre petrol four-cylinder engine with a CVT automatic transmission that incorporates a pair of electric motors; one that is primarily used a generator to recharge the 1.0kWh lithium-ion battery mounted under the rear seats, and a more powerful traction motor that assists the petrol engine when driving. The engine alone generates 105kW of power and 186Nm of torque, and while Honda does not quote separate outputs for the electric motors like other automakers, its says the powertrain has a combined maximum power output of 135kW and 315Nm of torque. In most situations, the powertrain acts like a regular series-parallel hybrid with the primary electric motor used to get things moving away from a standstill, before the petrol engine chimes in and they work together. The generator unit is used to recharge the battery pack through regenerative braking and under deceleration, but it can also reverse its flow and provide additional power under heavy acceleration. Medical couriers provide fresh model as volunteer numbers plunge across the sector
Volunteers and organisations are calling on the Queensland government to overhaul the sector amid declining participation numbers. The State of Volunteering in Queensland 2024 report — conducted by Volunteering Australia using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and other organisations — found participation in the state down more than ten per cent in 2023, compared with 2020. CEO of Volunteering Queensland Jane Hedger said Australia's strong volunteering tradition was under threat. "In Queensland we have around 2.8 million volunteers … but over the last three years we have seen about a ten per cent decline," she said. Those 2.8 million volunteers make up 64 per cent of people aged 15 and over, but it's a sharp drop compared with the 75 per cent who said they took part in volunteer work in 2020. The report found Queensland saved $31 billion in potential wages through volunteer work in the 2022-23 financial year. "If [that declines] by ten per cent … in any other industry, that's a $3 billion decline," Ms Hedger said. It's not all doom and gloom. Bloodbikes Australia is a volunteer organisation which provides urgent courier transport for medical materials, like blood and test results, between health facilities. Since forming in 2019, Bloodbikes has grown from one volunteer to more than 360 — all qualified and accredited by national bodies — and has completed almost 10,000 deliveries for 72 healthcare providers, free of charge. The organisation has not had trouble finding and retaining volunteers, which founder Peter Davis attributed to the organisation's implementation of "the world's first volunteer franchise" system. "They're basically an independent volunteer. We don't have a bank account. We're not incorporated, we're not a charity," he said. Bloodbikes volunteers aren't told what to do or where to go, and can work when and where they want to. Those rules include observing the road rules, paying their own costs, and holding a valid certificate in blood transportation. Orders are coordinated through a shared document where riders post their availability and health providers locate nearby riders. Mr Davis said the "no bullsh*t" system's lack of fuss, and flexibility for volunteers were central to Bloodbikes' success. "Our volunteers are keen and enjoying the process of volunteering and I can't help but think that it's a model that can at least be part of the formula for volunteering in Australia," he said. "The way that we've structured volunteering [in Australia] … is its own worst enemy." The declining number of people volunteering has sparked a Queensland parliamentary inquiry into the sector, launched in December last year. Public submissions closed in March, with hundreds of organisations and individuals describing their experiences and outlining the issues facing the sector. Mr Davis urged the parliamentary inquiry to focus on creating better communication networks between volunteer organisations and clients, and removing systemic barriers to recruiting and retaining volunteers. "I would hope that Volunteering Australia and in Queensland itself they create some sort of way in which volunteering groups can communicate their service to [the community]," he said. "Up to now there's no informed way of doing that other than for me and our volunteers to go and knock on doors. Ms Hedger said the volunteer sector needed better investment to help organise and manage its people and systems. "That includes things like making the administrative side of volunteering easier, signing up, getting orientated, getting trained, we need to make that easier and standardised across the system," she said. "So there's a lot of things that are both systemic and behavioural that we need to do to encourage people to volunteer more and keep people volunteering." The inquiry committee is due to report to parliament on September 18. In the meantime, Bloodbikes will continue to deliver blood for the most vulnerable in the community. "By our very nature, we rather like the wind in our hair and a bit of freedom," Mr Davis said.
