Sarawak government donates life-saving AED unit to PGA Brigade
Dr Sim (front row, third left) hands over the AED unit to Rosdi. KUCHING (July 21): Deputy Premier of Sarawak Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian yesterday presented an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) unit to the General Operations Force (PGA) Sarawak Brigade at the brigade headquarters' health clinic. Receiving the unit on behalf of the force was Deputy Commander of Sarawak PGA Brigade, ACP Rosdi Inai. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dr Sim said the contribution reflected the Sarawak government's continued commitment to supporting the logistical and welfare needs of security personnel. 'We want our security forces, such as the PGA, to not only safeguard public security but also to be capable of responding swiftly to medical emergencies,' he said. He noted that the AED donation is a symbol of the government's support and appreciation for the service and sacrifices of the secutiry forces. 'This highlights the importance of regular AED training to ensure the device can be used effectively during real emergencies,' he added. Dr Sim explained that the AED is a vital device that delivers life-saving electric shocks to the heart in the event of cardiac emergencies, thereby increasing the chances of survival before medical responders arrive. The AED handover is expected to boost the PGA Sarawak Brigade's preparedness in handling medical emergencies during operations, training exercises, or within base camps. Meanwhile, Rosdi, speaking on behalf of PGA Sarawak, expressed gratitude to the Sarawak government for its concern for the health and safety of security personnel, particularly those often deployed in the field. The event was attended by senior police officers, including the Commanding Officer of the 11th Battalion PGA, Supt Ku Majidi Che Ku Jusoh, and Sarawak Health Department representatives. PH Red Cross CPR caravan targets 1M Filipinos on first response
The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) will hold a caravan to train one million Filipinos on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first response. During the Department of Health's (DOH) CPR Day event at Mandaluyong City on Thursday, PRC secretary general Dr. Gwendolyn Pang said the caravan will visit various areas in the country starting July 17 up to October 16, or World CPR Day. "We have 100 chapters all over the country. In the morning, we will train students in schools, then in the afternoon, we will train workers. During weekends, we will go to the malls and other populated places where we can share our knowledge on CPR, " Pang said. 'CPR should be as basic as reading and writing,' she added. SAGIP Meanwhile, the DOH held CPR demonstrations for representatives of local government units, aiming to spread the skills in localities nationwide. 'The power to save lives does not rest solely in the hands of health professionals. This is the responsibility of all," DOH Assistant Secretary Dr. Gloria Balboa said. The Health official recommended the following steps under the DOH's CPR framework SAGIP: ·S – Survey the scene and check the situation ·A – Assess the victim ·G – Get help and call 911 ·I – Initiate compression ·P – Place the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) pads, if available The DOH said at least one family member should have CPR skills for sudden moments of cardiac arrest. 'It can happen anywhere, anytime, even within the when it happens, every second counts," Balboa said. CPR law The Philippine Heart Association (PHA) called on local government units and the national government to enforce Republic Act 10871 or the Basic Life Support Training in Schools Act. The law mandates that public and private schools incorporate basic life support training for high school students. PHA Council on CPR chairperson Dr. Don Robespierrre Reyes pointed out that only one out of 10 cardiac arrest cases survive globally due to several factors, including a lack of emergency response and an absent emergency medical system. 'Dito sa Pilipinas, walang marunong mag-CPR. Yung response rate natin ng mga bystanders, mababa… Ang gusto natin, pataasin kahit papaano. Kapag tumaas yung response rate ng nasa tabi-tabi lang, mga bystanders, nataas din yung chance na makabuhay tayo ng isang cardiac arrest patient,' said Reyes. (Here in the Philippines, no one knows how to do CPR. The response rate of bystanders is low… What we want is to raise it somehow. If the response rate of the bystanders gets high, there is also a big chance that we can help a cardiac arrest patient survive.) Reyes said that nine years after the law was passed, basic life support is still not part of the Philippine curriculum. 'They (teachers) need to be educated on a new topic. Hindi naman ito kasama sa course nila noon. So, you have to train the teachers to teach this one, and probably, dun siguro nagkakaroon ng konting problema,' Reyes noted. (They need to be educated on a new topic. This wasn't included in their previous courses. So, you have to train the teachers to teach this one, and probably that may also be where they encounter a bit of a problem.)—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Home improvement employees perform lifesaving efforts during medical emergency
The Mount Dora Fire Department highlights the Mount Dora Lowe's employees who were honored at a City Council meeting for their lifesaving actions during a recent medical emergency. On Monday, April 7, 2025, at around 5:00 p.m., the Mount Dora Fire Department jumped into action for a cardiac arrest emergency at Lowe's Home Improvement on US Highway 441. Thanks to the quick and courageous actions of the Lowe's employees, a life was saved before our brave first responders had a chance to arrive on the scene. Store staff reported that the patient was alert and conversing with a cashier just before suddenly collapsing and becoming unresponsive without a pulse. Robyn McDonald, a Lowe's employee, quickly fetched the store's Automated External Defibrillator (AED), while Jimmy Givens and Rafael Valdez began administering CPR. The team successfully delivered four AED shocks, resuscitating the patient before the arrival of emergency personnel. When they arrived, the dedicated paramedics from the Mount Dora Fire Department and Lake County Fire Rescue offered compassionate advanced post-cardiac arrest care and swiftly took the patient to a nearby hospital. At last night's May 20 City Council meeting, the Mount Dora City Council, in partnership with the Mount Dora Fire Department, recognized McDonald, Givens, and Valdez with Community Hero Awards for their decisive and life-saving actions. 'Had these individuals not acted so quickly and effectively, the outcome would have likely been much different,' said Fire Chief Hightower. 'This incident is a powerful reminder of the critical importance of community education programs, including CPR, AED usage, and emergency response training.' This result clearly illustrates that bystanders, like the Lowe's Mount Dora team, are trained and ready to respond. The Mount Dora Fire Department continues to advocate for public training in CPR, AED use and Stop the Bleed, reinforcing the impact everyday citizens can have during medical emergencies. Ltd., focusing on innovation and strategic partnerships to expand their global explore the valuable insights in the Automated External Defibrillators Market report, you can easily download a sample PDF of the report - Overview of Report Findings 1. Market Growth: The automated external defibrillators market is expected to reach a value of US$ 2.20 billion by 2030 from US$ 1.55 billion in 2023 at a CAGR of 4.5%. Growth in the automated external defibrillators market is mainly driven by the increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which are responsible for more than one-third of all deaths across the world. Immediate defibrillation within a few minutes of cardiac arrest saves thousands of lives, leading to the growth in adoption of AEDs in public places as well as private spaces. Government campaigns and public access defibrillation (PAD) schemes have also picked up the pace of AED installation, assisted by legislation enforcing their presence at crowded locations. 2. Rising Cardiovascular Disease Incidence: The worldwide upsurge of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is the key driver fueling the rise of the automated external defibrillators (AED) market. CVDs such as heart attacks, arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) are the prime cause of fatality worldwide. As per estimates by the World Heart Federation, over half billion people around the world continue to be affected by cardiovascular diseases, which accounted for 20.5 million deaths in 2021. This expanding health burden has increased the necessity for timely, accessible, and effective emergency treatment such as AEDs. Sudden cardiac arrest, a life-threatening expression of CVD, may strike at any moment and needs to be treated immediately by defibrillation to re-establish normal heart rhythm. AEDs are created to be easy, portable, and accessible to non-medical staff, hence an essential instrument for first-responder treatment. With decreasing survival rates by about 10% per minute without defibrillation, the presence of AEDs can greatly enhance patient outcomes. With increasing CVD cases, the risk of SCA occurrences in public places, workplaces, and homes also increases. 3. Government Support and Public Access Programs: Many governments and health agencies are actively promoting the installation and use of AEDs through public access defibrillation (PAD) programs. These programs provide for greater accessibility of AEDs in areas of high public traffic and the education of laypersons in basic life support and device operation. Regulatory agencies also require AED installations in specific facilities, and in some jurisdictions, provide financial incentives or subsidies to promote compliance. In addition, legislative improvements to Good Samaritan laws are diminishing liability issues, encouraging people to act during emergencies. Combined, these drivers are not only growing the AED market but also making a more responsive and health-aware community, one where early action can significantly enhance cardiac arrest survival. 4. Geographical Insights: In 2023, North America led the market with a substantial revenue share, followed by Europe and APAC, respectively. Asia Pacific is expected to register the highest CAGR in the automated external defibrillators market during the forecast period.
