James Gunn reinvents Superman with hopeful tone, nostalgic design, and emotionally grounded storytelling
James Gunn is reinventing Superman for a new generation, and early signs point to a heartfelt, visually rich reintroduction of the Man of Steel. With David Corenswet donning the cape and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, this reboot marks the first major step in Gunn's vision for the new DC Universe. Set in a bright, timeless version of Metropolis, Superman opens with its hero already mid-battle—a deliberate choice that reflects Gunn's desire to drop audiences into a fully realized world. Executive producer Chantal Nong describes Corenswet's Superman as a kind, selfless figure—more grounded than godlike, and deeply human in his values. Beyond the action, the film is rich in detail. Production designer Beth Mickle revealed nearly 100 Easter eggs are tucked into the film's sets, from Daily Planet nods to comic-book deep cuts. Even Superman's Fortress of Solitude takes inspiration from Avatar: The Way of Water—a blend of crystal architecture and kinetic water imagery. 'We wanted to make it a place where he lives, researches, even keeps a zoo,' Mickle said, referencing the Silver Age comics. While Superman's side brings warmth and optimism, his nemesis Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, adds a layer of calculated menace. Hoult's Luthor is a sleek, modern-day tech mogul with a public persona that hides his villainy. 'He's not just evil—he truly believes he's protecting humanity,' Hoult said. According to Brosnahan, Superman isn't just another superhero movie—it's a 'shot in the arm of hope.' Corenswet adds that playing Clark Kent is just as rewarding as being Superman: 'You always have a secret. That's always fun as an actor.' Superman lands in theaters on July 11, setting the tone for the new DCU—and possibly redefining a classic hero for years to come.

New ‘Avatar: Fire & Ash' image teases tense reunion between Sully family and Fire-Born clan
A newly released image from Avatar: Fire and Ash teases a tense moment between two of the franchise's most pivotal characters. Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), last seen surviving the events of Avatar: The Way of Water, may still have a few tricks up his sleeve as he knows the Sully family is likely to come after him for the death of Neteyam (Jamie Flatters). In the new image, Quaritch is seen alongside Spider (Jack Champion), hinting at their complicated dynamic in the upcoming film. Father and son: Complicated loyalties The relationship between Quaritch and Spider remains one of the most complex in the Avatar saga. As revealed in The Way of Water, Spider is the biological son of the original Quaritch. Though father and son are connected by blood, Spider was raised by Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his allies. By the end of the second film, Spider had returned to his adoptive family after briefly aligning with the cloned Quaritch. Will Fire and Ash give them a chance to reconnect—or will their paths continue to diverge? Audiences will find out when the film hits theaters on December 19. Grief and new beginnings for the Sully family Avatar: Fire and Ash picks up as Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) grapple with the loss of their son, Neteyam. The story will introduce a new Na'vi clan known as the Ash People, adding further depth to the richly layered world of Pandora. With secrets still lurking beneath Pandora's surface, Lo'ak (Britain Dalton), Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), and the rest of the Sully family must summon the courage to face powerful new threats. A powerhouse cast returns for Avatar: Fire and Ash James Cameron has assembled a stellar cast to bring the world of Pandora to life once again. Kate Winslet reprises her role as Ronal, a key figure in the Metkayina clan. Having previously worked with Cameron on Titanic, Winslet is poised to take on another major role in a film expected to dominate the global box office. Also joining the cast is Harry Potter alum David Thewlis, whose character Peylak remains shrouded in mystery. Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters December 19, 2025.

QuickCheck: Does Tom Cruise hold the record for holding his breath underwater the longest for a movie?
PETALING JAYA: If you haven't watched 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning' where lead actor Tom Cruise performs most of his stunts, you should see it. You have to admire his tenacity and dedication in performing these death-defying stunts, including holding his breath for six minutes during an underwater scene in 'Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation'. But is it true that Cruise is the movie star who held his breath underwater the longest for a movie? VERDICT: FALSE While Cruise's stunt in the 2015 movie was impressive, another movie star beat him to it, and that's Kate Winslet. She held her breath for seven minutes and 15 seconds while filming the 2022 movie 'Avatar: The Way of Water.' Winslet, who plays the Metkayina's Ronal in the film, learnt to freedive with the rest of the cast to film their underwater scenes. This record also landed the Titanic star in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest breath-hold on screen by a lead actor, beating Cruise's record as well. Winslet was surprised that she beat Cruise's record while filming the movie, which earned about USD2bil. "Poor Tom... I mean, I don't know Tom at all – I've never met him in my life – but I'm sure he's getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record," she told USA Today. "I loved it, though. I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better," she added. Winslet's co-stars managed to hold their breath for a significant amount of time while filming as well. Sigourney Weaver reportedly held her breath underwater for six and a half minutes, while Zoe Saldaña held as long as five minutes. Director James Cameron was proud of Winslet's performance for the role. 'Kate's a demon for prep, so she latched onto the freediving as something that she could build her character around,' he told The New York Times. Cameron added that due to the nature the character Winslet was playing, she had to be utterly calm underwater – and said that she was a natural at it. The next instalment in the sci-fi franchise, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash', is scheduled to be released by the end of 2025. 'The company sells its products to government and commercial customers for security, border patrol, surveillance, disaster response, delivery logistics support, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. 'They have made the 'jump' overseas that is critical to getting Kiwi companies to global scale.' More than 80 local and international judges contributed to deciding the awards.
