‘Thunderbolts' Director Teases His Take on the ‘Complex' X-Men
While Marvel basks in the success of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, director Jake Schreier—the guiding hand behind Marvel's earlier 2025 hit, Thunderbolts—is looking ahead to the studio's most anticipated movie that doesn't have the word 'Avengers' in the title. Schreier is helming the movie designed to bring the X-Men fully into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, on the heels of Deadpool & Wolverine. As you'd expect, he's giving his approach to the oft-adapted characters a lot of thought. Speaking to the Playlist (and keeping things in Marvel-approved non-spoilery terms), Schreier said that his movie's take on the X-Men will be quite different than what fans have seen before. Of course, he couldn't elaborate more on that, but his comments suggest the departure will come not with the movie's aesthetics but with a new approach to the emotional arcs of its famously conflicted mutants. 'To be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that's like a very rare and fortunate opportunity. That's very exciting.' Schreier also called the project 'an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that's inherently interesting and complex material.' In the same Playlist piece, Marvel boss Kevin Feige was quoted as calling Schreier's X-Men a 'youth-focused reboot' in terms of both casting and 'tone and perspective.' Details about the new X-Men movie are understandably scarce at the moment; it does not have a release date set, though the MCU has its trajectory mapped out through 2026 (Spider-Man: Brand New Day; Avengers: Doomsday) and 2027 (Avengers: Secret Wars). Characters from the Fox X-Men movies, released prior to Marvel parent company Disney's acquisition of the characters in 2019, are expected to appear in those two Avengers films, with Schreier's reboot coming after. ‘One of the most entertaining Marvel movies ever' is streaming free - but not for long
As yet another Marvel blockbuster hits screens this week, one of the superhero franchise's best entries is available to watch for free BBC iPlayer is currently streaming one of the most beloved films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it won't be on the platform for very long. This small-scale action thriller from 2015 stars one of Hollywood's most beloved comedic actors taking on the role of a reformed criminal who eventually becomes one of the Avengers' most reliable heroes. 10 years on, this groundbreaking superhero film with one of the most unique characters in Marvel's extensive roster is still highly regarded by comic book fans, so it's well worth a rewatch. Unfortunately, Ant-Man, starring Paul Rudd, is only available on iPlayer for the next eight days, so viewers have a very limited window to watch this jaw-dropping movie totally free of charge. The action gets started when Scott Lang (played by Rudd) is released from prison and forms an unlikely partnership with Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), who is desperate to keep his dangerous shrinking technology from falling into the wrong hands. However, Pym's volatile former protégé, Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), has developed a shrinking suit of his own known as the Yellowjacket that could wreak untold havoc. With the latest MCU adventure, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, hitting the big screen later this week, now's the perfect time to revisit one of Marvel's smaller superhero hits. One fan raved in a five-star Google review: 'Ant-Man is BY FAR one of the most entertaining, funny, and heartwarming movies in the MCU - I'm thinking it's my favorite! 'I went into the movie not expecting much but Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was so easy to like and hilarious. 'My family had such a great time watching this underrated classic. It was fast-paced, had good character development, a simple storyline, didn't take itself too seriously but managed to HIT A HOME RUN, and did I mention funny as hell?' Another gushed: 'I love this movie with all my heart. It's funny, interesting, heroic and one of the funniest at Marvel Studios.' 'I never realized how great this movie is until now,' a third admitted. 'Top 5 MCU films for me. 'It is just so fun, fresh, and has great action too. Villain is actually pretty good. One of the more rewatchable films in Marvel.' Someone else said: 'This is probably my favorite Marvel movie. I am a huge Marvel fan and this was just amazing. It has comedy and the character development is amazing!' And a final review said: 'I recommend this movie cause it's just so darn funny! 'Paul Rudd does an amazing job as Ant-Man, and the humor is amazing. The action: 10/10. Humor: 10/10. Basically everything: 10/10.' ‘A Different Man' Offers Unexpected Look into Physical Appearances, Human Nature
About 20 years ago, 'Hito wa Mitame ga Kyuwari' (Appearances matter 90% for people) became a bestselling book in Japan. With its eye-catching title, the book discusses the importance of non-verbal communication. The author, Ichiro Takeuchi, used 'mitame,' meaning appearance, as an umbrella term not only for looks, but also various non-verbal information about someone, such as facial expressions, demeanor and tone of voice. Still, preoccupations with looks persist no matter what. But why? A Different Man, a new film written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, shakes up viewers' preconceptions through its unexpected setting. Protagonist Edward (played by Sebastian Stan of 'The Apprentice' and the 'Avengers' franchise) has severe facial disfigurements; living alone in his New York apartment, he dreams of becoming an actor, but cannot find a way forward. He spends his days unable to express himself, always concerned about how others look at him. He has a crush on a new neighbor, aspiring playwright Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), but cannot act on his feelings. One day, however, Edward's appearance undergoes a dramatic change. An experimental treatment he has undergone at the suggestion of a doctor has worked, and he starts a new life under a new name. Everything is going fine until Oswald (Adam Pearson), a man who looks exactly like Edward's former self, comes along. Can we become someone we want to be if our appearance changes? If not, why? Through Edward's story, the film depicts the tragic nature of always wanting what we cannot have. Stan skillfully portrays Edward's inner conflict with the help of special effects makeup in the film's first half, and his own face in the latter half. The ensemble, with Pearson's Oswald as the epitome of non-verbal communication and Reinsve naturally embodying a woman unbound by societal values, are also outstanding. In showing the consequences of obsession with appearance and surprising twists, the film shares some elements with 'The Substance,' starring Demi Moore. Both introduce fictitious advanced medical treatments – but as real-world cosmetic procedures pervade society at an incredible speed, the horror comes from the stories not seeming completely fantastical. Stan and Moore both won the 2025 Golden Globe awards for best performance in a motion picture in the musical and comedy category for these film roles. The fact that they won in this category may mean that people saw the inherent ludicrousness of human nature reflected in both performances. But I can't just laugh it off.
