Orioles announcer Ben McDonald hospitalized after fall from deer stand

Orioles announcer Ben McDonald was hospitalized after falling 25 feet from a deer stand Thursday morning, he revealed in an X post. McDonald, who said he suffered a 'severe concussion' along with two cracked vertebrae and doesn't remember anything from the scary incident, shared a video of him in a hospital bed asking what happened. He is told that the chain or the strap broke from someone else in the room. Advertisement 'I'm fine and appreciate everyone checking on me,' McDonald, 57, wrote in his post, in part. 'Very lucky … I'll be back in #Birdland soon calling @Orioles games! Thank you for all ur thoughts … and thank you to the Doctors! See yall soon!' 3 Ben McDonald missed the Orioles' broadcast July 18 after falling out of a deer stand and being hospitalized. 'I talked to him today, and he goes, 'Well I don't remember the fall,'' one broadcaster said during the segment, according to Awful Announcing. 'He said, 'I've been doing this for 35 years and I never fell.' He said a lot of the people that he was with … don't like to go up 25 feet. So I think Ben's gonna join them now. I said, 'Isn't there a parachute or something that can, you know, [help] for 25-feet falls?'' McDonald pitched in the majors from 1989-97, collecting a 3.91 career ERA across 211 appearances — including 198 starts — with the Orioles and Brewers, and he was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008 for his years at LSU. Sal Licata's WFAN warning for Craig Carton after Fox Sports cancelation

WFAN host Sal Licata issued a stern warning to former colleague Craig Carton. Carton recently had his show, 'Breakfast Ball,' canceled by Fox Sports and The Athletic reported that a WFAN return could be in the offing for the 56-year-old. 'And by the way, I'm not worried about Craigy coming back,' Licata said Wednesday on the midday show he co-hosts with Brandon Tierney, according to Awful Announcing. 'I told it to his face. This was years ago, whenever he came back the last time. You can come back all you want, you're not taking my spot.' Sal Licata isn't going down to Craig Carton wihtout a fight. Getty Images for Fanatics While it's unclear whether Fox has other plans for Carton, it makes sense that he could return to The Fan after he had spent 13 years making a name for himself at the legendary New York radio station. Carton worked with WFAN from 2007 to 2017, hosting 'Boomer and Carton' in the mornings before he spent time in prison for fraud charges that the shock jock said was a result of a gambling problem. He returned to WFAN in 2020 to host the afternoon show with Evan Roberts and departed in 2023 when he joined Fox Sports. He launched 'The Carton Show' in 2023 that aired in the early mornings and was later rebranded 'Breakfast Ball.' Craig Carton's show 'Breakfast Ball' was canceled on Fox Sports. GC Images Carton does have a show with FanDuel, which launched in March called 'The Comeback with Craig Carton,' that primarily focuses on responsible gambling and recovery. Carton, a recovering gambling addict, also goes around to colleges to speak about problem gambling, among other things.

Scott Hanson had "knock-down, drag-out" negotiation with NFL over RedZone return

In an era of strong personalities throughout sports media, Scott Hanson has managed to come off as extremely low-key, agreeable, and likable. And, of course, the NFL apparently used his good nature against him during his latest negotiation. But Hanson, who now has a contract to return as the host of RedZone, isn't bashful about discussing the sausage-making process. 'There was quite a knockdown drag-out negotiation, but I'm thrilled to be back," Hanson told Jimmy Traina of via Reice Shipley of "Thrilled that we were able to come to an agreement. To think that I would be on the show for 20 years, and have it be as successful as it has been, as it most likely will be, is extraordinary. I'm very blessed. There was a time when I thought, 'I don't know if this is going to happen.' It was not my intention to kind of go that direction, but you have to be willing for that eventuality or that possibility.' That's what happens when dealing with an entity that always drives a hard bargain. And the NFL always drives a hard bargain. With everyone. About everything. 'We started talking before last season,' Hanson said regarding his negotiations. 'Once the season hit and we hadn't reached the deal, I said, 'I got to focus on the football here. I'm confident we'll get something done.' I've been the host of the show for 16 years now. I've been with the NFL for 18 seasons. They've been good for me. I'd like to think I've been good for them. A reasonable mind should be able to come to an agreement here. However, the NFL as they [are] wont to do, they are very tough negotiators." That's the nicest way anyone could ever put it. The best news is that Hanson will be back in the job that he loves, quarterbacking the RedZone product for those who are very comfortable with Hanson in the chair. And who would have had a hard time imagining, or accepting, anyone else in that role. 'I love my job," Hanson told Traina. "I love hosting RedZone, and I hope that comes across. I love serving the football public, and that's why I look at myself as a servant. I'm not doing it to glorify myself. I'm not doing it to try and make my platform greater. That is a byproduct of plenty of millions of people on NFL Sundays. I'm trying to serve the viewer as I want to be served." It's good for NFL fans, and thus good for the NFL, that Hanson will be back. And his negotiations are a reminder that, no matter how much money the NFL makes, it will never pay a penny more than it thinks it has to. For anything.

Gilbert Arenas interested in hiring Joy Taylor for 'Gil's Arena' after FOX ouster

Joy Taylor has one suitor on the record vying for her hosting services. In the wake of Fox Sports 1 and Taylor parting this week – along with the show she co-hosted, "Speak," and two others in the network's daily lineup being canceled – former NBA-All-Star-turned-podcaster-and-streamer Gilbert Arenas has voiced his desire to hire Taylor. 'Joy's a great host,' Arenas said on a recent "No Chill Gil" Summer League stream, according to Awful Announcing. 'I know we're looking at her for the football side. We've been behind the scenes talking to her for the last year.' Arenas' show, "Gil's Arena," exists under the Underdog Fantasy umbrella and has 1.1 million subscribers on YouTube. Taylor has not commented since the news broke of her show's cancellation.

MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta: Dave Roberts ducks question on controversy

Sports media personality Pat McAfee was the event's MC and seemed taken aback by the inquiry, doing his best to shield Roberts and others on stage from the pointed question. "I believe the question was a political question about laws that are on the books," McAfee said. "I don't know if any of us are experts or the ones that should be getting asked about that." The reporter cited Roberts' own words from a 2021 MLB Network AAPI special for the need to be "relentless with our voices." Roberts followed up: "I think Pat answered it perfectly and honestly, I appreciate the question, I appreciate your thoughts. ... I do feel that everyone has the right to voice thoughts, but right now, I really choose to just focus on the players in the game and I'm excited to be here. ... For me, to be able to manage these guys, I'm honored. So I don't want to get into the policy, but thank you." Pat McAfee, Dave Roberts went full company men when faced with a tough question about why the MLB All-Star Game was back in Atlanta despite no change to Georgia's disenfranchising voting laws. — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) July 14, 2025 Commissioner Rob Manfred has been similarly avoidant explaining the decision to give the game to Georgia again. "I've said it before, we wanted to bring an All-Star Game back to Atlanta," Manfred said at the 2023 owners' meetings in Arlington, Texas. "I made a decision in 2021 to move the event and I understand, believe me, that people had then and probably still have different views as to the merits of that decision. "What's most important is that the Atlanta Braves are a great organization. Truist Park and The Battery are gems in terms of the facilities, and Atlanta and Georgia have been great markets for us for a very, very long time." Dave Roberts was once an advocate Roberts, who was also set to manage that 2021 game, was extremely vocal in his support of MLB pulling the festivities at the time - a decision that came days after then-President Joe Biden said he was in favor of moving the game. "For the commissioner to kind of do his due diligence in baseball, outside of baseball, players, front office, and ultimately make a decision to remove the All-Star Game and the draft out of the state of Georgia, I support," Roberts said in 2021. He added: "It's very impactful, because I think in a world now where people want and need to be heard - in this particular case, people of color - for Major League Baseball to listen and do something about it and be proactive, I think it sets a tone from Major League Baseball to the players, and we have to be in it together." Despite his past advocacy, the longtime Dodgers skipper has faced criticism in recent months for his silence on social issues. Roberts went on the team's April visit to Donald Trump in the White House, celebrating the 2024 World Series championship. The manager gushed about taking an Oval Office photo in front of the Declaration of Independence, a "picture I'm going to cherish for a long time." For what it's worth, Trump had previously ripped Roberts' bullpen management during the Dodgers' 2018 World Series. When ICE raids began in Los Angeles in June sparking massive protests, fans and local leaders were calling on the Dodgers to stand with the community and denounce the Trump administration's tactics. But Roberts didn't have much to say when the Dodgers returned from a road trip to a city in turmoil. "I know that when you're having to bring people in and, you know, deport people and just kind of all the unrest, it's certainly unsettling for everyone," Roberts said, adding that he doesn't "know enough" and "can't speak intelligently on (the situation)."
