ASHAs envisaged to be community health volunteers, says health ministry

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday said that the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) are envisaged to be community health volunteers and the support for them is primarily the responsibility of State and Union Territory governments. The health ministry said the primary responsibility of strengthening public healthcare system, including support for ASHA workers lies with the respective State and Union Territories. (Representational image) The ministry was responding to a question raised by John Brittas of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The ministry said that central financial and technical assistance is provided based on Programme Implementation Plans submitted by the states, within the limits of available resources. The ministry also noted that ASHAs currently receive a fixed monthly incentive of ₹3,500, revised from ₹2,000 in March 2025 during the 9th meeting of the Mission Steering Group. They are also eligible for additional performance-based payments and team-based incentives of up to ₹1,000 per month under the Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative. Non-monetary entitlements include uniforms, identity cards, cycles, mobile phones, drug kits, and access to rest rooms. ASHAs who have served for at least 10 years are eligible for a one-time recognition amount of ₹50,000, revised from ₹20,000 in March 2025, along with a formal certificate. The Ministry further stated that ASHAs are covered under centrally funded insurance schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Beema Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Beema Yojana. Pension benefits of ₹3,000 per month after the age of 60 are available through the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan Dhan Yojana, with contributions shared equally by the government and the beneficiaries. Health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year is also provided under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. In response to a specific reference to Kerala's 'highest' monthly honorarium of ₹7,000 plus incentives and the state's demand to reclassify ASHAs as 'health workers', the Ministry did not indicate any plans to change the current policy. It stated that the incentive structure is revised periodically in line with programme requirements.

Delhi's Ayushman Arogya Mandir Rollout Picks Up Pace, 34 Centres To Be Inaugurated Soon

The Delhi government is ramping up its Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative, with 34 new centres expected to be inaugurated by July 24 as part of the second phase. Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh chaired a high-level meeting at the Secretariat earlier today to review the progress. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Health Department, Public Works Department, among others. "In a determined push towards building a 'healthy and empowered Delhi', the government is fast-tracking efforts to develop world-class healthcare infrastructure across the Capital," Dr Singh said during the meeting. Another 75 centres are expected to be opened by the end of August. Officials said the government is identifying available spaces in community centres, banquet halls, market shops, polyclinics, and even unused residential plots to house the new facilities. "A feasibility study is currently being conducted to identify and establish Ayushman Arogya Mandirs at over 950 locations in Delhi," Dr Singh said. So far, 429 sites have been identified, and 98 have received the required No Objection Certificates. The Mandirs are designed to serve as neighbourhood health centres offering free primary care, diagnostics, and medicines. The larger goal is to set up 1,139 such centres across the city in a phased manner. The meeting also saw Dr Singh criticising the pace of hospital infrastructure upgrades. He reprimanded PWD officials for delays, stating, "Any negligence in health-related projects will not be tolerated under any circumstances." "From Ayushman Arogya Mandirs to medical colleges and government hospitals, the Delhi Government will ensure that there is no shortage of funds in delivering world-class healthcare services," he added. With the next round of inaugurations just days away, the bigger question now is whether the government can keep up the momentum and meet its ambitious targets in time.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta flag off Ayushman Bharat registration vans in New Delhi

New Delhi: Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off Ayushman Bharat registration vans in Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Sunday. Addressing the event, the BJP chief slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for not using Rs 1700 crore under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme for public welfare. He said, "Under PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, we had given Rs 1700 crore to Delhi between 2021 to February 2025, but not one penny was spent, and now the responsibility of the expenditure of this fund for the public welfare has fallen on the shoulders of (Delhi CM) Rekha ji." Continuing his attack against AAP, he added, "We were ready to quench Delhi's thirst with water, but you kept the vessel upside down, so what could be done? On February 20, you turned up the vessel, so you got Ayushman Bharat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was ready to provide Rs 5 lakh for the poor's healthcare since September 2, 2017. Their pride came in between. They did injustice to the poor." Lauding Ayushman Arogya Mandir , Nadda targeted Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinic and called AAP shortsighted. "A wise man is farsighted and thinks of Ayushman Arogya Mandir, and shortsighted ones bring Mohalla Clinics. From the time a mother conceives a child to the time the child turns two, Ayushman Arogya Mandir takes care of all the vaccinations. India is playing a lead role in reproductive and child health care," JP Nadda said. Last month, on June 17, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Ministers Parvesh Verma and Manjinder Singh Sirsa inaugurated Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in the national capital. After the inauguration, Manjinder Singh Sirsa informed that 33 Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs were inaugurated with excellent infrastructure and facilities. "A total of 33 Arogya Mandirs have been inaugurated today, and they have excellent infrastructure", Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. Meanwhile on May 18, in a major boost to healthcare under the Pradhan Mantri Vay Vandana Yojana , Delhi Minister Ashish Sood distributed Ayushman Bharat cards to senior citizens aged 70 and above in Janakpuri, West Delhi.
