Why DiJonai Carrington was ruled out for Wings-Mystics game
The post Why DiJonai Carrington was ruled out for Wings-Mystics game appeared first on ClutchPoints. Dallas Wings forward DiJonai Carrington has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Washington Mystics, the team announced before tip-off. Carrington was initially listed as probable due to a rib injury. On Sunday morning, though, the Wings officially downgraded her status to out. Advertisement The probable-to-out downgrade is fairly surprising. Her probable status suggested she would likely play, but that clearly is not the case now. Nevertheless, the Wings, who have won back-to-back games, will attempt to earn a third consecutive victory on Sunday without Carrington on the floor. Carrington, a 27-year-old forward, earned the WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year Award for the 2024 season. So far in 2025, Carrington, who is in her first season with Dallas, is averaging 11.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per outing. She is shooting just 35.6 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from beyond the arc, however. The veteran forward was consistently in the starting lineup to begin the season. Aziaha James has started in her place in the last two games, though. Carrington has still impacted the Wings off the bench, but it remains to be seen what her role will be once she returns from her current injury. James will likely start once again on Sunday. Wings look to defeat Mystics despite DiJonai Carrington's injury absence The Mystics will enter Sunday's contest with a 5-8 record. Washington is in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Meanwhile, Dallas holds a 3-11 record. Although the Wings are in last place in the Western Conference, they have built some positive momentum in recent action. Advertisement Earning a win on Sunday afternoon will prove to be a challenge without DiJonai Carrington. The Wings will try to take care of business despite her injury absence against the Mystics. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 PM EST in Washington for what should be a competitive affair. Dallas Wings secure 2nd home game win of the season, topping the Atlanta Dream 68-55
The Dallas Wings secured its second home game win of the season, topping the Atlanta Dream 68-55 at a sold-out College Park Center Tuesday night. Bueckers scored 12 points and has reached double figures in all 12 games she has played. Aziaha James added 11 points and Li Yueru had 10 with a career-high 15 rebounds for the Wings (4-12), who have won three of their last four games. Ryne Howard had 23 points and surpassed 2,000 for her career for Atlanta (10-5), which had won 9 of its last 11 games. Alisha Gray added 13 points and Brionna Jones 12. The Dallas reserves outscored the Atlanta bench 21-5. The Dream went 0 for 11 from 3-point range in the first quarter and finished 7 of 34 (21%), while shooting 23% overall. Dallas closed with an 11-0 run and Atlanta shot 3 of 20 to fall behind 19-10 after one quarter. The second quarter belonged to the Dream and they used three 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 31-29. Atlanta was within 31-30 in the first minute of the second half but, aided by a technical foul on Gray, the Wings scored the next nine points, leading 40-30 on a Bueckers' jumper. Dallas led 50-40 after three quarters. The Dream never got closer than eight points in the fourth quarter.

Paige Bueckers' Wings teammate gets ‘spark' claim after huge win vs. Sun
The post Paige Bueckers' Wings teammate gets 'spark' claim after huge win vs. Sun appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Dallas Wings defeated the Connecticut Sun by a final score of 86-83 on Friday night. Dallas has now earned two consecutive victories overall. Rookie Paige Bueckers led the Wings with 21 points and seven assists. Meanwhile, Aziaha James — another rookie who started her second game of the season on Friday — scored a career-high 17 points to go along with five assists and five rebounds. Advertisement 'Just proud of our group, Aziaha… Didn't play a ton of minutes in that first half,' Wings head coach Chris Koclanes told reporters after the win. 'And then was the spark that we needed… You saw in the third quarter, in the second half, like, that's Aziaha James… It's natural, right? Rookie year, you're feeling it out, when is your opportunity coming? 'For her to be able to respond the way she did was just fantastic. I know our team has been wanting it for her, so excited for her.' James was more aggressive on Friday than in past games. 'Shying from attacking the rim in these past few games,' James told reporters. 'I just had to turn a different mode, help my teammates out.' Advertisement She added that her 'main goal' was to attack the basket and get to the free throw line. James, who was selected No. 12 overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft, has had her playing time limited for the most part this season. She has now started back-to-back games, however. It appears that James is earning the trust of Koclanes. James has started over DiJonai Carrington in recent action. The Wings still believe in Carrington, but Dallas is now 2-0 with James in the starting lineup. Bueckers, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, has received plenty of attention. However, it is becoming clear that Dallas features another reliable rookie on the roster. Advertisement 'Whenever my number is called I'm ready,' James said. The Wings' next game is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 3 PM EST. That contest represents the end of their current road trip before the Wings return home for four consecutive games in Arlington, TX. Wings look to keep momentum going in visit to Mystics
June 22 - After a demoralizing 1-11 start, the Dallas Wings have sparked hope ahead of Sunday's afternoon road game against the Washington Mystics. Dallas has tripled its win total by claiming its last two games, including a June 17 win over the Golden State Valkyries and a victory in Connecticut on Friday. Though its most recent win against a struggling Sun team doesn't seem impressive on paper, how they pulled off the win is. Arike Ogunbowale and DiJonai Carrington, the Wings' second and third-leading scorers, combined for 12 points on 4-for-18 shooting from the field. Guard Aziaha James stepped up amid the stars' offensive struggles, pouring in a season-high 17 points and a team-best 7-for-8 from the free throw line. "I've been shying from attacking the rim in these past few games, so I just had to turn (on) a different mode," James said after Friday's win. This year's first overall pick Paige Bueckers has been as advertised. The UConn standout leads the Wings in points, assists and steals per game, and has recorded consecutive 20-point games in their pair of wins. The Wings' bench pieces working in tandem with Bueckers, Ogunbowale and Carrington may be the key to continuing their win streak. Washington (5-8) has had a mixed bag of results lately. The Mystics beat the Sun by 37 points on June 8, then lost to the Atlanta Dream by 33 points just a week later. In their most recent two games, they've fallen down early and had to play from behind. They faced a 15-point deficit after the first quarter against the Chicago Sky on June 17, then held the Sky to 28 second-half points to complete the rally. Washington was down by 13 in Friday's game against the Dream and stormed back with a 31-point fourth quarter, yet fell just short in a 92-91 loss. Washington's top-two scorers, Brittney Sykes (20.6) and rookie Sonia Citron (13.6), were consistent over the two games, notching double-digit points in both. The Mystics' other pieces, however, were spotty. Shakira Austin took over the fourth quarter in the loss to the Dream, scoring 13 points on 6-for-7 from the field. But apart from Austin's 28-point performance in Atlanta, Washington hasn't seen a double-digit scoring performance from anyone outside of Sykes and Citron. Much like the Wings, depth may be the determining factor for Washington in Sunday's matchup. --Field Level Media

Paige Bueckers scores 21 points, Aziaha James posts career high as Dallas Wings beat Connecticut Sun 86-83
Paige Bueckers had 21 points and seven assists in the former UConn star's return to Connecticut, fellow rookie Aziaha James scored all of her season-high 17 points in the second half, and the Dallas Wings beat the Connecticut Sun 86-83 on Friday night. Bueckers and James are the lone rookies this season to record a 15-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist game, with Bueckers doing so three times. NaLyssa Smith scored 12 points and Li Yueru added 11 points and nine rebounds, both season highs, for the Wings. The game featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties, the last of which came when the Sun's Aneesah Morrow scored in the lane to make it 62-62 with 1:18 left in the third quarter. James answered 26 seconds later with a floater that gave Dallas the lead for good. Aziaha James posted a career-high 17 points against the Sun on June 20. Dallas Wings Morrow made a driving layup that trimmed Connecticut's deficit to 76-73 with three minutes to play, but Arike Ogunbowale hit a 3-pointer and then made two free throws before DiJonai Carrington made a layup with 45.8 seconds left that gave the Wings a 83-76 lead. The Wings shot just 36% (11 of 31) in the second half but made 21 of 26 (81%) from the free-throw line, where Connecticut made 12 of 15. The Sun (2-11) have lost five straight. Dallas (3-11), which won its first home game of the season and snapped a seven-game skid Tuesday with an 80-71 victory over Golden State, won back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Wings beat Connecticut 109-87 on May 27, the Wings' first win of the season. "It's fun coming back here every single time," Bueckers said during the post-game press conference about returning to Connecticut, where she secured an NCAA Championship with the UConn Huskies. "They've always shown so much love to me, and it's been a state that's done a lot for me. It's always amazing to come back and get another win here." Up next The Wings play Sunday, June 22, at Washington.
