Therefore, it's crucial to nourish it with the right types of food and drink to keep your gut microbiome as healthy and diverse as possible. ‌ You've likely spotted various 'health shots' on supermarket shelves - small bottles of juice that claim to aid digestion and maintain gut health. ‌ But instead of spending a fortune on these, which can be quite expensive, you can actually whip up your own at home using just a few ingredients, reports the Express. Nutritionist Jordan Haworth aka @mrguthealth, who has been documenting his journey on the Mediterranean diet for several years now, says there's a simple way to create energy shots at home that are far cheaper than store-bought ones. And if you're in need of a pre-workout boost or simply want to kick-start your day on a high note, then you'll want to try these out. All you have to do is take 100g of ginger, peel them and slice them very thinly. According to the experts at BBC Good Food, ginger is packed with anti-inflammatory properties, and studies indicate that it may help lower blood pressure as well. ‌ Ginger not only acts as a way to eliminate gas from your digestive system, but also soothes the intestinal tract. For a healthy boost, toss some ginger into a blender followed by 300ml of beetroot juice. The expert suggests that this juice is packed with nitrates which can enhance blood flow and stamina. ‌ Next, squeeze in the juice of one lemon, brimming with vitamin C that's crucial for cell health, radiant skin, strong bones, and healing wounds, according to the NHS. Blitz it all together to make six invigorating shots of this juice. The expert added: "We're not straining because we want to keep that prebiotic fibre." If you're looking for another energising drink post-exercise, the gut health guru shared a recipe for turmeric shots, noting: "Turmeric contains curcumin, which is anti-inflammatory, so it's great to take post-workout." ‌ To whip up this recipe, start with 100g of fresh turmeric, peeled and prepped for the blender. Grab 100g of peeled chopped ginger and 300ml of pineapple juice as well. The expert explained that pineapple juice is full of digestive enzymes and essential vitamin C. Jordan added: "Don't forget to add black pepper to activate the curcumin." Blending everything, he raved: "These will save your gut, your immune system and your bank account."

She claims it's the simplest thing you could possibly whip up. The brains behind "Life Without Diabetes, The Cookbook" assures that this snack is a breeze to make and perfect for those managing diabetes or insulin resistance. Emma Porter, known on TikTok as @emmaporterskitchen, shared her straightforward Parmesan crisps recipe. She said: "They take under 10 mins to make and if you need a super quick last-minute gift that look great and are always a conversation starter then these are always a winner." She further explains that these nibbles are a "fantastic substitute for those with diabetes or insulin resistance. Helping keep blood sugars stable!". BBC Good Food confirms that hard cheese, like Parmesan, is one of the healthiest options out there. Made from unpasteurised cow's milk and aged for at least 12 months, Parmigiano Reggiano, as it's also known, is packed with "mineral-binding compounds that make it an especially useful source of bone-building minerals such as calcium and phosphorus.", reports Surrey Live. "It also contains proteins that may modulate the immune system as well as having blood pressure-lowering effects. Thanks to its long ageing process, parmesan has very low levels of lactose, making it a potential option for those with lactose intolerance. However, since it contains cow's rennet, it's not suitable for those following a vegetarian diet." One Ingredient Parmesan Crisps - full recipe Ingredients block of Parmesan (hard cheaper cheeses don't work as well and don't have the same snap/crunch) One baking sheet with a silicone/non-stick baking sheet Method Set oven to 190C Grate cheese Pop into measuring tbsp piles (a good pinch). Lay spaced out and not close to the edge as they met and spread out Bake 7 minutes approx (keep an eye on them!) until golden / browned around edges Remove from oven and slide sheet off baking sheet. Pop on side to cool for a minute before sliding crisps onto a cooling rack. Poppy O'Toole, 31, tips and tricks ensure that each chip comes out crispy and delicious every time. The best-selling cookbook author shared her recipe on TikTok to her 4.8 million fans. She claims this is "one of the easiest recipes to do in an air fryer" and the method only involves three ingredients - potatoes, oil and then salt. Firstly, peel your potatoes and slice them into batons - go thicker for chips and much thinner for fries. ‌ Then, add them into a bowl as Poppy suggests it's easier to season them this way. Seasoning is key to transforming your spuds into tasty chips that will pair perfectly as a side with most meals or simply enjoyed on their own as a snack. ‌ In Poppy's recipe, she uses a tablespoon of vegetable oil and "a good sprinkling of salt" for some classic chips, but you could use anything to create different flavours. There are dozens of combinations that can bring different flavours to your chips. Add some Chinese Five Spice to create a salt and pepper fakeaway, try Italian herbs for a fresh and aromatic side dish, or combine multiple herbs and spices to create your own signature blend. Adding a thin layer of oil to chips before seasoning or cooking, particularly when using an air fryer, helps the seasoning stick better and produces a crunchier texture. The oil serves as a carrier, enabling the seasoning to adhere to the chips' surface, reports the Express. Moreover, oil can facilitate a more uniform cooking process, resulting in a crisper exterior. Returning to Poppy's thicker chips, the chef places the entire batch directly into the air fryer at 180C for 15 minutes. After that, she shakes the basket and puts the chips back in for an additional 15 minutes. She remarks, "It's half an hour, all in, for golden, crispy, delicious, fresh potato chips or fries." What are the benefits of using an air fryer to cook chips? These widely used kitchen appliances employ hot air circulation, requiring little to no oil, which leads to lower fat and calorie consumption compared to deep-fried chips. A 2015 study found that food cooked with an air fryer contained significantly less fat. According to BBC Good Food, this "healthier approach" is more beneficial for our bodies compared to traditional frying methods, which have been linked to weight gain and heart disease. Plums, with their delightfully sweet and soft texture, are a favourite among many Brits. They can be enjoyed solo on a sunny day or incorporated into a variety of desserts and even salads. To maintain their freshness, there's a unique trick that sets them apart from other fruits typically found in your kitchen. One key aspect of storing supermarket-bought plums is knowing when to leave them out of the fridge and when to refrigerate them to maximise their lifespan. ‌ Plums need to ripen outside of the fridge. Only once they've fully ripened should they be placed inside the fridge. ‌ While plums remain fresh and edible at room temperature, refrigerating them post-ripening is the optimal strategy for prolonging their freshness. "Once ripe, plums will keep at room temperature for around three to four days," according to BBC Good Food. "Or, store them in the fridge in a perforated bag for up to five days." You can stash your plums in a bag in your fridge or in the crisper drawer alongside other fruits and vegetables. If you're keen to extend their shelf life even further, freezing plums is a viable option. However, you'll need to halve them and remove the stone from the middle. They can be stored in the freezer for approximately six months, allowing you to reserve them for future recipes that require plums. To ripen your plums before refrigerating them, simply place them in a paper bag to hasten the process. You'll know they're ripe when they feel slightly soft to the touch. Refrigerating plums too soon can hinder their ripening process. If you prefer to let them ripen naturally and aren't pressed for time, you can store them in a bowl instead of a paper bag before refrigerating them. Ripe plums can be identified by their aromatic scent and slightly softened texture, reports the Express. Additionally, as the plum ripens, its skin starts to take on a slightly dusty appearance, signalling that it might be ready for refrigeration.
