Glastonbury's Welsh language pop star who is playing alongside Charli XCX and The 1975 after catching the eye

Glastonbury's Welsh language pop star who is playing alongside Charli XCX and The 1975 after catching the eye Cardiff's Mali Haf will play the BBC Introducing Stage Mali was a runner up in the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition 2025, earning her a place on the coveted line up. (Image: Bea Young ) She describes her music as electronic fairycore of Welsh witch pop, but who exactly is Mali Haf who will be performing Welsh language music at Glastonbury 2025. The singer will appear at one of the most prestigious festivals in the world alongside the likes of The 1975, Neil Young and Charli XCX to name a few. So, how did a girl from Cardiff find herself on this prestigious line up of acts? Well, she entered a competition on a whim. ‌ Mali entered the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition 2025, not optimistic that she would progress, let alone win a spot to perform during the weekend. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here . ‌ It is an annual contest that provides a platform for new and unsigned UK/ Ireland-based musicians to showcase their talents and potentially win a coveted spot on the main stage at Glastonbury. The judges include Michael and Emily Eavis, Glastonbury stage bookers and music business professionals. Despite not winning the competition, they decided on two runners-up. This includes Ghana-born, Gloucester-raised neo-soul / hip hop act Nat Oaks and Cardiff's own Welsh language singer-songwriter Mali Hâf. Both of the acts received a £2,500 Talent Development prize from the PRS Foundation as well as a slot at this year's Glastonbury Festival. Content cannot be displayed without consent Article continues below To enter the competition you must submit a short application form and put forward your favourite representation of your music. Mali decided to submit her song Esgusodion, the Welsh word for excuses. She said about the song: "It's quite broad really, what I'm singing about, but like excuses. I guess I sort of realised that they're everywhere and it was at the time of the election. I was like, they are literally, they're everywhere. From yourselves, from politicians, from maybe partners. So I guess the song was like noticing that and shooing them away in a fun way." ‌ She then found out she had reached the top 90 out of 7,500 applicants, before then making the top 8 and then finally the top 3. She said: "Each step that happened it was like 'oh my god'. I had to process each step so the final one where I'm actually going to the festival you know it took a while to be like 'oh my god I'm going'. "If you asked me a few years ago, is that where you want to play and I'd be like of course that's every musician's dream. But, you know, I'm a realistic, maybe I'm too realistic sometimes, you know, just so I don't get my heart broken. But I was like, you know, if it doesn't happen, whatever and then it does happen. And it's like, you know I at least thought it would be something even more in the future. But the fact that it's come now, it's crazy." When asked what can the crowds of Glastonbury expect from a Mali Haf performance she said: "Well, if you follow me you know that I love my witchiness and magic spells and folklore, but like I also love modern music too so it's like combining that. My folky roots with with the modern elements, just being Mali Haf who's playful and doesn't take life too seriously." ‌ The weekend will boast numerous acts from across a spectrum of musical genres, as well as a variety of different acts including comedy, culture and educational talks. The singer has said that she is most looking forward to seeing the powerful women performing across the weekend, including Doechii and Amyl and the Sniffers. She said: "Festivals in general are like the happiest place in the world to me. Like you are just living in the outside world and you see music every two seconds. Really like it's just like a dream life for a weekend isn't it. Of course it's a dream like every other musician." The musician had previously worked at Glastonbury a few year ago on a coffee stall, however this time she'll be returning to do what she does best, performing her music on stage. ‌ Mali who has already started packing is looking forward to showing what Wales has to offer, whether that is in the way of her Welsh language songs or in her outfits. She has two outfits made by Welsh fashion designers, including Rosie Evans and Joseph Thomas of the Haus of Androgyny. She said: "Obviously, there's more to my identity than just being Welsh, but being raised in the Welsh culture and having music and the arts being so important, you almost feel like I've got to give back because like it's a big part of my journey like would I would be the singer I am now if it wasn't for my culture telling me how important and amazing singing and the arts are." The majority of her set will be done through the medium of Welsh, following in the footsteps of the Welsh band Adwaith who have also performed on the BBC Introducing Stage. ‌ The singer will be following in the footsteps of the Welsh language band Adwaith as she performs on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury. (Image: Adam Houghton ) She said: "I'm hoping that it's just becoming more normal to be heard, rather than like, 'oh, it's the first time we're hearing Welsh', because it shouldn't be, you know. It shouldn't like be unusual. We're literally next door to England and our language has been around longer. So why is it unusual? "I'm glad to be part of that wave that's just bringing its normality and showing every aspect of it, as there's not just one way of showing Welsh." Article continues below Mali will be performing on the Thursday, Saturday and Sunday of the festival across three different stages. You can find more information here.

Glastonbury fans complain over Rizzle Kicks snub after Jordan Stephens' message

Jordan Stephens and Harley Alexander-Sule, known as the duo Rizzle Kicks, performed on the Other Stage at Glastonbury today with Jade Thirlwall among those in the crowd Fans of duo Rizzle Kicks shared their disappointment with the BBC earlier over their set at Glastonbury Festival. The reaction came after bandmate Jordan Stephens had himself issued a message about filming at the festival. Jordan and his bandmate Harley Alexander-Sule, both 33, performed together as Rizzle Kicks on the Other Stage at Worthy Farm in Somerset this afternoon. It marked the duo's return to the festival after making their Glastonbury debut on the BBC Introducing Stage back in 2013. ‌ Prior to their latest set, Jordan announced yesterday that the BBC, the "exclusive broadcast partner" of Glastonbury, would not be filming it. He shared the news in a statement issued to fans on Instagram ahead of their return today. ‌ Jordan wrote: "The BBC are not filming our Glastonbury set. If you're not there you will not be able to watch it back. It might well be once in a lifetime. Who knows." He added at the time: "The set is [fire emoji] and we're buzzin for it." His partner Jade Thirlwall, 32, later expressed disappointment over the situation. The Little Mix member, who is set to play the Woodsies Stage tomorrow, referenced the news on her Instagram Story whilst sharing her excitement over getting to see him perform at Glastonbury. Alongside a selfie, she wrote this afternoon: "What du mean I'm about to watch my bf at glasto when we were dreaming about it this time last year. Rizzle Kicks set isn't televised (booo) so get into it and get here to the other stage lol." Jade isn't alone in her disappointment, with a number of fans having expressed frustration over Rizzle Kicks' set not being available on BBC iPlayer. Several other acts who performed on the Other Stage today, like Franz Ferdinand and Gracie Abrams, were livestreamed. The livestream for that stage however began at 2.15pm, which was after Rizzle Kicks' set. ‌ One fan wrote on X: "Rizzle Kicks not being broadcast at Glastonbury is a travesty, especially compared to some of the s**t that they are showing." Another wrote: "@BBCiPlayer why can't I found Rizzle Kicks. I'm really disappointed." A third person, who had previously requested a livestream be available for the set, later posted: "Thanks guys missed Rizzle Kicks great job." Another said shortly after the duo's set began: "No Rizzle Kicks on iPlayer, sort it out lads." Approached for comment, a spokesperson for the BBC told the Mirror tonight that the broadcaster will be providing more than 90 hours of performances. They said: "The BBC, Glastonbury's exclusive broadcast partner, brings audiences a two-month celebration of the festival this June and July. "Our BBC iPlayer coverage provides over 90 hours of performances, with live streams of the five main stages, in addition to The Glastonbury Channel and over 90 sets to watch on demand throughout July. There is also extensive coverage on TV, radio and BBC Sounds - including over 30 performances and DJ sets that will be available to hear on demand on BBC Sounds throughout July."

Glasgow TRNSMT Festival to celebrate city's 850th birthday

Rockstar Energy Presents TRNSMT has joined forces with the Glasgow 850 Festival Fund to honour the city's rich cultural history and vibrant music scene. The BBC Introducing Stage at this year's TRNSMT will display Glasgow 850 branding, celebrating the city's status as a UNESCO City of Music. Read more: Former Rangers chairman 'do not screw it up' warning after US takeover Free football camps to take place across Glasgow this summer Legendary rapper Betty Boo names THIS Glasgow band as dream collaboration Complementing the music, the BBC Introducing area will feature a photography gallery wall, curated by Glasgow-based photographer Euan Robertson. This gallery will highlight iconic moments and emerging talent from TRNSMT's history, paying tribute to the artists and audiences who have helped shape the city's sound. Mr Robertson said: "As well as playing host to some of the world's most exciting musical artists, TRNSMT has also brought together a team of some of the country's best music photographers to document the festival. "There has been an immense amount of stunning visuals created at TRNSMT over the years, so I was delighted to curate some of my favourite work by this talented group to exhibit during the Glasgow 850 celebrations." For the anniversary, an interactive art installation will also be unveiled. Commissioned especially for the event, it is the creation of Glasgow-based visual artist and designer, Nicola Beedie. This installation, inspired by the city's grid street layout, evolving skyline, and architectural heritage, consists of sustainable plinths that festivalgoers can move through and interact with, becoming part of the artwork. The monochrome plinths, representing Glasgow's diversity of musical styles, will be decorated by festivalgoers, artists, staff, and crew with paint pens over the weekend, creating a living, evolving artwork. Ms Beedie said: "When I think about Glasgow, I think about the music, the creativity and the communities, so it was really important for me to create something that could combine all of those aspects. "It didn't feel right to create a piece for the 850th anniversary of the city without involving the people."

Glastonbury Surprise Set Odds 2025: Here are the 11 artists tipped to play secret gigs at Worthy Farm - from Lewis Capaldi to Radiohead

It's nearly time for one of the biggest musical events of the year - as 135,000 people pack into Worthy Farm for the Glastonbury Festival . They'll see headliners The 1975, Olivia Rodrigo and Neil Young, along with hundreds of other acts across over 100 stages. But looking at the schedule on the official website, music fans will see numerous timeslots with 'TBA' next to them - with no indication of who will be playing. It could be a global megastar, or some busker from down the road on an acoustic guitar. Such is the joy of the festival. There are some big gaps to be filled - on Friday there's 11.30am on the Woodsies Stage, 4.55pm on the Pyramid Stage, and 8.30pm on the BBC Introducing Stage. On Saturday, expect plenty of interest about who exactly 'Patchwork' are - third on the Pyramid Stage bill. Meanwhile there will be surprises for prime spots on the Park Stage at 7.30pm and the Shangri-la Stage at midnight. On Sunday, those opting to go to the BBC Introducing Stage at 8.30pm could be in for a treat (or not). The bookies reckon they have a fair idea of who will be playing the secret slots - here are their 11 favourites. 1 . Haim - 1/5 The three sisters of Haim have a new album out and are in the UK with free time on Glastonbury weekend. The fact that there's a book called 'Patchwork' written by a German author called Sylvia HAIM means some people reckon they've solved the riddle of the mysterious band of the same name appearing third on the bill on the Saturday. They are red hot 1/5 favourites to appear. | Getty Images for Prime Video Photo Sales 2 . Pulp - 1/2 Another band with an acclaimed new album out and who are currently touring (but have a gap at Glastonbury-time) are Sheffield indie stars Pulp. They've headlined twice in the past, including stepping in at short notice when The Stone Roses pulled out, and would be a popular booking. They are priced at 1/2 second favourites. | Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Lewis Capaldi - 1/2 Scotland's own Lewis Capaldi is a big favourite to play a surprise set before Alanis Morissette on the Friday on the Pyramid Stage at 4.55pm - his odds are a narrow 1/2. Two years ago he famously needed the crowd's help to finish a song due to his much-publicised health problems, which led to him taking a career break. He has unfinished business. | Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Mumford & Sons - 2/1 Mumford & Sons released fifth studio album 'Rushmore' earlier this year and are getting back to playing live - recently headlining Radio 1's Big Weekend. They topped the bill on the Pyramid Stage in 2013. It would seem to be a good time for them to return - ahead of a fallow year in 2026. They are priced at 2/1. | Getty Images for the American Mu Photo Sales
