Nicole and Papa from Renault Clio ad unrecognisable three decades later
In the 1990s, the stars of Renault Clio's TV adverts were more famous than the Prime Minister, and their names might not mean much, but their catchphrase definitely will Back in the day, they were household names. It seems unbelievable now, but the stars of the 1990s Renault Clio adverts were once more familiar to Brits than then-Prime Minister John Major and the legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Evans. And even if the actors Estelle Skornik and Max Douchin aren't instantly recognisable by name, their iconic catchphrase certainly is. Their on-screen father-daughter relationship struck a chord across the nation. "Nicole?" the debonair Frenchman would enquire, full of anticipation. "Papa!" she'd respond, with a simplicity that captured hearts. In the debut advert, Nicole would slip away while her father seemed to nap in the garden of their chateau, dashing off to secretly meet with her dashing beau in her trusty Clio. But, unbeknown to Nicole, her dad was also on a clandestine mission, whizzing off in his car to surprise a mysterious lady with flowers. Upon Nicole's return, she'd discover her father seemingly-still snoozing in the garden, culminating in their trademark two-word dialogue. The charming ads aired for seven years starting in 1991, playing a part in the whopping sales of 300,000 Renault Clios. But what became of the duo? Estelle, who brought Nicole to life, has since graced other TV projects, including From Hell, The Days That Made History and Les Lyonnais. Now 53, she starred opposite Ioan Gruffudd, portraying a romantic interest for his character Horatio Hornblower in the epic naval drama set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. But Estelle has reportedly taken a step back from the limelight, favouring family life over fame. Tying the knot with Laurent Bismuth in 1996, the couple have since had three children. Her final acting gig on record was back in 2011. Reflecting on her character in a 1998 interview with the Independent, she reminisced: "Nicole is very spontanee and I'm very spontanee. She's open to life, she's French. Nicole is part of me." Max Douchin, fondly remembered as 'Papa' and now aged 87, found his acting niche later in life. He featured in an episode of the French-Italian TV show Les Héritiers De Patmos in 2017 and graced the Paris premiere. Currently enjoying retirement in Burgundy, France, surrounded by his partner and family, he hasn't given up performing entirely – he participates in a local choir. Chatting with Mail Online, he recalled the iconic Clio adverts with a sense of nostalgia. "When I meet English people, who happen to be in Burgundy, and I speak with them, every English person I meet remembers Papa," he shared. "I have a lot of good souvenirs from that programme for the Renault Clios."

I drove the Renault 5 E-Tech. This chic French EV has one silly feature you'll never find on a Tesla.
The Renault 5 E-Tech is an electric reincarnation of a legendary, hugely popular French car. It's the European car of the year and has proved popular with buyers on the continent. I loved its quirky touches — it's the only car I've ever driven that comes with a baguette holder. It's the accessory you didn't know you needed: a baguette holder. Yes, the Renault 5 E-Tech has just such a feature in the passenger footwell — a gimmick, of course, but a brilliantly quirky touch nonetheless that reminds you you're driving a French voiture. I was going to include a picture of an empty baguette holder, but then I found this one from the car's launch showing Olympic gold medal-winning British diver Tom Daley with an actual baguette in the holder instead. You could also use the holder for a bunch of flowers, should you be so inclined. As you might have guessed from the E, the revived 5 is indeed electric, and there is no gas equivalent. It came about after now-departing CEO Luca de Meo rashly promised in a speech that Renault could make a new car in just 24 months — a very tight timeline in the auto world — and managed to do so only a few weeks past that target. The 5 made its debut way back in 1972 and was an instant hit, becoming the best-selling car in France for 14 years, with about 5.5 million vehicles sold during that period. While it was available in the US in the late 1970s, as Le Car, it didn't exactly bewitch American drivers. Souped-up versions appealed to boy racers, and a turbo model won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1981. The new 5 is Europe's car of the year 2025, beating the Alfa Romeo Junior, Citroën C3-ëC3, Cupra Terramar, Dacia Duster, Hyundai Inster and Kia EV3. It was back-to-back wins for Renault, after the Scenic — a small MPV — took the crown last year. To find out why the 5 won, I took a train on a very warm Friday afternoon earlier this month to the northern edge of London to pick up an R5. It had a 52kWh battery, 150 HP engine, and came in vibrant "Pop! Green." Buying this car would set you back a shade under £27,000 ($36,300), and has a decent WLTP range of 251 miles. This configuration represents the best value for money, according to What Car? The range starts at about £23,000. I hit the M40 motorway bound for the picturesque town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. I was able to do the speed limit of 70 miles an hour for most of the journey and got there in about two hours. As I failed to connect my iPhone to the audio system before setting off, I tuned into the top 40 singles countdown on BBC Radio 1 — Sabrina Carpenter ended Alex Warren's 12-week run at the top of the chart, by the way. The audio system sounds superb — and was apparently created by Jean-Michel Jarre, the legendary French electronic music artist. For a small-ish EV, the 5 packs a punch, doing the speed limit effortlessly with plenty in reserve, had I wanted to risk a speeding fine. I can't say it's the quietest car I've ever driven, but I can't fault the ride and handling. As well as the baguette holder, there are plenty of charming/weird touches, such as the "5" battery indicator on the hood that lights up. It's part of the car's "modern lighting signature with cheeky welcome and goodbye sequences," as Renault puts it. The 5 is a lot of fun to drive — more than the quite boring MG I tested earlier this year. Not everyone may love its many quirks, such as the fabric on the dashboard and ceiling, and I found the four—yes, four—control stalks plus controls on the steering wheel to be quite bewildering. Maybe I'm just easily confused, but I still failed to master the automatic transmission before having to give the car back. And I still have no idea what the "Multi-Sense" button does. I had about 50% left and didn't want to risk running out of charge on the trip back to London, so I found a charging station in a fairly dismal retail park in Banbury. This was actually the first time I've charged an EV, and it took me a minute to work out the right plug (yes, I am a slow learner). Fortunately I didn't have to create an account to use the charger and could just tap my credit card to release the power. Getting the charge up to about 80% took about 15 minutes and cost just over £15 (about $20). Public chargers are not that cheap in the UK, and had the car been close to flat, it would've set me back about £50 (almost $70) to reach 100% — not too much less than a tank of gas. If you don't have a garage or driveway, the economics of an EV become considerably more complicated, which is one reason hybrids are becoming increasingly popular. In April, the 5 E-Tech was the UK's best-selling EV for retail buyers. In both April and May, it helped Renault take the top spot for private registrations of pure EVs. According to Renault, the car also leads its segment in Europe. Car Dealer magazine also made the 5 its car of the year, calling it the "right car at the right time." "The Renault 5 has both added some much-needed excitement to the lower end of the electric car market, and given Renault dealers some fire in their bellies. This small car is delivering a huge impact," says editor in chief James Baggott. I'm inclined to agree. And you know what's coming now, don't you, American readers? It appears Renault has no plans to bring the 5 E-Tech to the US. Désolé.

Lewis Capaldi's most memorable moments as star set to make huge comeback at Glastonbury
The Scots singer is rumoured to be taking part in a surprise Glastonbury set tonight so we take a look back on his most memorable appearances. Rumours have been swirling that Lewis Capaldi is set to play a surprise set tonight at Glastonbury which has got so many fans excited. The Scots singer has been taking a break from performing and writing since his last appearance at the festival. His Glastonbury 2023 performance saw him visibly struggling with his Tourette's Syndrome to the point fans had to finish his songs for him. After his set, the 28-year-old announced a break from music and cancelled all of his upcoming gigs to focus on his mental and physical health. Lewis is now rumoured to be making a major return to the Pyramid Stage today at 4.45pm and what better way to do it then to return to give the Glastonbury performance of his dreams that he sadly couldn't manage last time. We take a look back at his most memorable moments in the past that really put a smile on our faces... Mocking Noel Gallagher It all began in 2019 when Noel was being interviewed on Radio X and went on an expletive-filled rant about the state of modern music. During the interview he asked: "Who is this Capaldi fella? Who the f**k is that idiot?" Scottish radio show host Gordon Smart, from Edinburgh, comes to the Someone You Loved star's defence, telling Noel: "I'm going to stand up for him, I think he's funny as f**k. He's a good lad - you'd like him as well." Noel then controversially accused the host of only sticking up for the singer "because you're Scottish." He then goes on to say: "You f****n' Scottish. If they found out Hitler was Scottish they'd go 'aw the wee man was just a wee bit misunderstood'.' The feud between the pair then went on social media before Lewis took to the stage at Glastonbury Festival. Wearing a parka, bucket hat and stylish sunglasses, he swaggered onto the stage poking fun at Noel Gallagher to the sound of "here comes the money". He used the sound to Noel's 'who is this Capaldi fella' interview before strolling around stage dressed as Gallagher himself then stripping down to reveal a T-shirt with his face in a love heart, before launching into his much-anticipated Other Stage set with his hit Grace. And just hours after mocking Noel in front of thousands, Capaldi was pictured posing with Liam backstage. Buckfast moment At the 2020 BRIT Awards, Lewis scooped Best New Artist, the night's first award and left fans in stitches. Hilarious video footage shows the then 23-year-old sauntering up to the stage at London's O2 Arena to accept the gong with a bottle of Red Stripe beer in hand. After embracing BBC Radio 1 DJ, Clara Amfo and music industry pal Niall Horan, a dumbstruck Lewis pointed out to droves of cheering fans before having another gulp of beer. Lewis's chart-topper Someone You Loved then won Song of the Year and this time he took to the stage drinking from a bottle of Buckfast. This time his acceptance speech wasn't muted and he said: "Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend who you can now see every night on Love Island. "It was actually about my grandmother who has sadly passed away a few years ago. I hope to God that ITV don't contact her to be on a reality dating TV show." He added: "Thank you so much, this has been the best year of my life. Thanks to my mum and dad for, I don't know, making love, and thanks to my grandmother for eh, dying? I'll see you later." Chewbacca One month after his 2019 Glastonbury entrance which saw him take a swipe at Noel Gallagher, Lewis hilariously trolled Noel again by swaggering onto the stage at TRNSMT dressed as Chewbacca. In a second legendary festival entrance, the Bathgate singer used his slot to mock the Oasis star after he branded Capaldi "'f****** Chewbacca' and told him to 'enjoy his 15 minutes'. He strutted onto the stage draped in a Scotland flag wearing the Star Wars mask. In an explicit rant to Variety magazine, Noel said: " 'F****** Chewbacca should enjoy his 15 minutes. The greatest day of his life that I slagged him off or called him an idiot. 'It's the greatest day of his f***** life so far. He's just thinking, 'Wow!' Well, I know you're Scottish and all that, but f***** hell! It is like a third world country, but for f***'s sake, man, you must have had a better day than this. Surely!' Scottish Beyonce When he released his debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent in 2019, Lewis' billboard got everyone talking. The picture of the billboard, posted on his Instagram, features a picture of Lewis with a bath towel on his head while he wears red glasses and gives the peace sign. There is also a quote from Capaldi where brands himself the Scottish Beyonce. The quote says: "The Scottish Beyonce on a London Underground billboard. Finally famous." THAT tracksuit video One of our favourite Lewis Capaldi moments of all time is the video he shared in his new designer tracksuit Lewis explained on his Instagram that he was given the tracksuit at a recent video shoot and couldn't wait to get home and try it on. He then films himself in a mirror telling his fans how much he loves the 80s-style shell suit. The singer said: 'Spoiler alert: It looks f******* amazing. Send my regards to your genitals. I mean, I look f****** hard as f****** nails'. He adds that the teal, navy and white trackie flatters his midriff as he sticks his stomach out before telling fans what he plans to do with his newfound confidence. Lewis said he would step into the pub and go 'Hello ladies! Do you like pop music, do you? Do you like pop music?' He hilariously acts out a scene at a pub where he is noticed by a group of women before approaching them and asking: 'Ladies! How ye doin'? Can I buy you a drink please?'

'Best response ever': Royal Family's very surprising comment on viral parody of Meghan and Harry's cringey 'Baby Momma' dance video
The Royal Family's official Instagram account has stunned followers by leaving a tongue-in-cheek comment on a video parodying Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's viral "Baby Momma" dance. British reality stars Jamie Laing, 36, and his pregnant wife Sophie Habboo, 30, filmed themselves recreating the now-infamous clip on the Grand Staircase of Buckingham Palace during an event hosted by King Charles III. The couple, who rose to fame on Made in Chelsea and now cohost a BBC Radio 1 show, were attending a reception on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate winners of the King's Trust Awards, an event recognising young people who have overcome adversity and made positive contributions to their communities. Also in attendance were high-profile ambassadors of the King's charity, including George and Amal Clooney, Dame Joanna Lumley, Charlotte Tilbury, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. "They said we couldn't film in Buckingham Palace," the father-to-be cheekily captioned the video on Instagram. But to the surprise of his 1.6 million followers, and likely the couple themselves, the Royal Family's official Instagram account commented: "We see you" with an open eyes and wink face emoji. The King's Trust account also chimed in, writing: "All of our attendees are very well behaved." The unexpected exchange quickly attracted thousands of likes and widespread praise from royal watchers, with many calling it "the best response ever". "@theroyalfamily best response ever! This really made me laugh," one user wrote, while another added: "This is brilliant!" A third chimed in: "@theroyalfamily in a world at times worrying and serious, this comment was so needed." British broadcaster Fearne Cotton, who also attended the palace reception, joined in on the banter, writing: "You also had your pap camera out with a flash. Think of what the flash has done to those priceless paintings." Even Formula One star Lando Norris reacted to the video, dropping a laughing emoji in the comments. While the Royal Family's social media account is run by staffers, it's understood that such comments are unlikely to be posted without senior approval. It comes as Prince Harry, 40, recently admitted his father "won't speak" to him, as tensions between the Sussexes and the monarchy continue to simmer. Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and now live in Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four. Earlier this month, Meghan posted a throwback clip celebrating Lilibet's birthday, showing her and Harry dancing in hospital to the "Baby Momma Dance Song" ahead of her giving birth. Meghan spoke about the now-viral moment during a recent interview on entrepreneur Emma Grede's Aspire podcast. "You have to be authentic," Meghan told Grede. "Did you see my Baby Momma dance?" Later in the interview, she reflected on how public perception of her has shifted over time. Grede asked: "If you could rewrite your public narrative from scratch, is there anything that you would do differently?" Meghan replied without hesitation: "Yes, I would ask people to tell the truth."
