Road repairs in Shropshire to mean overnight A49 closures

Engineering work will be carried out throughout August to repair a deteriorating road surface in Highways said it would mean the closure of a section of the A49 between the B4368, at Craven Arms, and A5, at Bayston work is due to start on 4 August and the closures will take place overnight to reduce are due to be completed by 13 September and National Highways said road users would "benefit from a safer, smoother road including clearer road markings". A Shropshire charity says it's needs to raise £240k to survive

A Shropshire support charity has said it needs to raise £240,000 by the end of the year to save it from Person Centred Advocacy and Support (PCAS) supports disabled and vulnerable adults across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and has been running for more than 30 said rising demand and limited funding had pushed it to "breaking point", and appealed to businesses and the public to help with raising money."What we do is a lifeline, it's plain and simple - people couldn't function without it," said its founder and manager, Simon Arthur. "But if we don't raise enough money by December, we'll have no choice but to shut down."That will leave many of the most vulnerable people in our community completely without support."The Oswestry-based charity said it had already had to temporarily close its doors four times in the last two years due to an increase in supports clients through issues including housing problems, safeguarding, social care access and health organisation does not recieve statutory funding and relies on fundraising, grants and are asking for donations from the public and businesses, whether that be one-off amounts or partnerships, to try and meet the target they need."We work with the people who fall through the cracks, the ones who don't meet the criteria for other services," said Mr Arthur."If we close, they will be left with no one."We've been part of this community for over three decades, we're asking Shropshire to help us keep going." Shrewsbury postman named Postie of the Year

A Shrewsbury postman has spoken of his pride after he won the "unbelievable" Postie of the Year award. Richard Kesterton collected his prize at the inaugural Heart of Royal Mail Awards, after 25 years of service. A Royal Mail spokesperson said the Shropshire postman had "consistently demonstrated Royal Mail's core values". Speaking at the awards, Mr Kesterton said: "It's really special. I'm still very shocked to be named Postie of the Year." He added: "It's unbelievable. It's been inspiring seeing everybody here today. I'm really proud." The Royal Mail said Mr Kesterton's exceptional work as a Workplace Coach had stood role included welcoming and inducting new employees, while also providing ongoing coaching and support to existing team members. The spokesperson added: "His efforts have not only delivered outstanding results but have also earned the admiration and recognition of senior leadership." An ostrich that appeared in one of the Harry Potter films has died at a Telford arrived at Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World in 2001 after some time on the set of the Chamber of Secrets, in which he appeared briefly in a classroom zoo said Jake had become ill suddenly, and despite several operations and help from keepers and vets, he was put to sleep on Tuesday."His curious nature, gentle personality, and unmistakable presence made him a highlight of many zoo visits," it said. "It was agreed that the kindest option was to let him go peacefully.""Jake was a huge character and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Thank you to everyone who loved and cared for him over the years."Dozens of people paid tribute to him on social media, sharing memories of visiting said: "This is so sad. I will miss him pecking the fence instead of the food scoop. And him being scared of the red scoop."Another added: "Will always remember how Jake made my boy giggle so hard when he use to peck at the fence after eating his feed." Plans to restore Telford Town Park amphitheatre to former glory

Grants are being pursued to restore a 400-seat amphitheatre to its former glory, according to a local and Wrekin Council said it was also committing funds to make improvements to the site in Telford Town Park. It said it hoped the initiative would complement the Telford Theatre on Tour programme of outdoor shows in the coming authority said the amphitheatre used to be a "vibrant cultural hub" which hosted live bands as well as drama and dance performances. The project aims to turn the site into an environmentally-friendly dedicated space for performances that would attract tourists and act as a venue for educational workshops and programmes, the council added."This project will be bringing cultural activity to the doorstep of many of our residents," said councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for leisure, tourism, culture and the arts."We are excited about the potential of this project to not only restore a beloved venue but also to create a dynamic cultural landmark that will benefit the community for years to come."
