Lotto 6/49 prizes worth $5M, $1M won in B.C. Wednesday
Lotto 6/49 tickets are seen in a file image. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Richard Plume) Two major lottery prizes were won in B.C. on Wednesday night, on tickets bought online and in person. The lucky Lotto 6/49 ticket that scored the $5-million jackpot in the July 9 draw was purchased on the gaming website operated by the B.C. Lottery Corporation. A physical ticket purchased in the Vancouver Island community of Sooke also won the guaranteed $1-million Gold Ball Draw prize. That person will have to sign their ticket and take other steps to claim their prize, which are laid out on the BCLC website. 'Lottery winners have 52 weeks from the draw date printed on their ticket to come forward,' a BCLC spokesperson said, in an email. 'All tickets are valid for one year after the date of the draw.' No other details are available yet about either of the winners. The odds of winning the main Lotto 6/49 jackpot – which requires matching all six numbers drawn without using the bonus number – are approximately one in 14 million, according to the BCLC. The odds of winning a guaranteed prize of $1 million or more in the Gold Ball Draw depend on the number of tickets sold.

'I couldn't stop vibrating': B.C. man wins $5M Lotto 6/49 jackpot, plans to give most of it to family
When Darryl Woods saw he won $5 million in the April 23, 2025 Lotto 6/49 Classic Jackpot draw, he was so overwhelmed he couldn't stop vibrating. His first move? Wake up his brother to share the news. 'I woke him up at 7 a.m. to show him. He was a bit dazed at first but was really excited for me once I showed him I won,' said Woods. That early morning knock was just the beginning of a life-changing week. While the shock of becoming a millionaire was still setting in, Woods says his biggest excitement comes from being able to support the people he loves. He plans to give most of the prize money to his kids and siblings. 'I'm most happy about giving the money to my kids,' he said while claiming his prize at BCLC's Kamloops office. Beyond his immediate family, Woods kept the win quiet for several days. He only began to share the news more widely while driving to claim the prize, making a few phone calls to friends along the way. The winning moment happened right at home the morning after the draw. Woods scanned his ticket using BCLC's Lotto! App and was stunned when his numbers — 9, 15, 22, 24, 40, 49 — matched up. 'I thought, 'this can't be real,'' he said. 'I had to check it three times to make sure and once I realized the amount, I couldn't stop vibrating until that afternoon!' Woods purchased the winning ticket at Shah Brothers Convenience Store on Westwood Drive in Prince George. While he plans to give most of his winnings to family, he's also considering using a portion to buy a classic car or a truck. 'It feels amazing… it's life changing!' he said. So far in 2025, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $16 million in Lotto 6/49 prizes. Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million. If you're looking to take a break from gambling, self-exclusion programs can be effective tools. See here for resources that are available across Canada.

Vancouver Island woman to celebrate $1M lottery win with ‘biggest pizza' possible
Lottery winner Lee Ann Nahanee is seen in this image handed out by the BCLC. A new millionaire on Vancouver Island says her celebration plans after winning the lottery include cozying up on the couch with 'the biggest pizza' she can find. Parksville resident Lee Ann Nahanee won $1 million from the May 28 Lotto 6/49 draw, on a ticket bought at the Temple Food Store on Highway Island West. She found out while filling up at a gas station in Nanoose Bay. 'The retailer checked the ticket. She turned to me and said, 'you just won one million dollars!'' Nahanee told the B.C. Lottery Corporation. 'I don't even remember how I drove home; I was bawling. I kept saying 'just get home, just get home.'' She said she was most excited to share the news of her big win with her close friends she considers a 'second family,' and went out for breakfast with them to celebrate. 'They were so happy for me. They know how much this meant for me,' Nahanee is quoted as saying in a Thursday media release. She plans to use the windfall to retire comfortably and buy a new car. 'I feel fan-freaking-tastic,' she said of winning a cool $1 million. The BCLC says British Columbians have won more than $27 million from Lotto 6/49 in 2025. The odds of winning the guaranteed $1 million Lotto 6/49 prize depend on how many tickets were sold. The odds of winning the $5 million jackpot are roughly one in 14 million.
