Penang man and Thai girlfriend nabbed, RM25,000 worth of ganja seized in anti-drug op

North-East OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the couple, in their 20s, was arrested in Pulau Tikus road at 11.30pm by a team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division during an anti-drug operation. "Police were then led to a house in Tanjong Tokong where a search turned up 15 compressed blocks of dried leaves wrapped in transparent plastic, suspected to be marijuana, weighing 8,200g and worth RM25,420. "Police intelligence showed this syndicate has been active since the beginning of this year, but further investigations are needed to identify the syndicate's network at large," he told the media at district police headquarters here on Monday (July 14). ACP Rozak said the drugs, estimated at 16,400 doses, originated from a neighbouring country and were meant for distribution in Penang. He said the male suspect tested positive for benzodiazapene-type drugs and had four offences on his criminal record, while the woman tested negative and had no priors. – Bernama

Police helicopter crash: Wreckage to be retrieved by July 14 or 15

Commander of the Air Operations Force (PGU) under the Internal Security and Public Order Department, Deputy Comm Datuk Noor Sham Md Jani, said the retrieval operation would be carried out with assistance from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). ALSO READ: Two senior cops among five injured in helicopter crash during exercise in Johor "InsyaAllah, with assistance from external agencies in the retrieval process, the Air Accident Investigation Bureau will be able to carry out further investigations into what happened that day,' he said when met by reporters after visiting the victims at Hospital Sultanah Aminah here on Sunday (July 13). He added that the communication recording device is also believed to still be inside the wreckage. "It is believed to still be in the helicopter. It records communication between the helicopter and the ground team. Technically, it's not a black box, it's referred to as a helicopter communication device,' he said. Meanwhile, the hospital's deputy director II Dr C. Mitesh said all five victims of the crash, including two in the intensive care unit (ICU), were in stable condition. He said Konstabel RG Devendran remained sedated and required respiratory assistance, while Koperal Adeline Liu Yan Siu was under observation in the ICU. Based on current assessments, all five victims are stable,' he said. In the 10.15am incident on Thursday (July 10), an AS355N helicopter belonging to the PDRM was involved in an accident during a flypast demonstration as part of the Mitsatom 2025 exercise, which involved Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. The other individuals involved were helicopter pilot Asst comm Faizul Mohammad, co-pilot Supt Ahmad Bustamin Baharom, and Sarjan Siti Latipa Khairuddin from the Tanjung Kupang police station. All five crew members were successfully rescued by the Marine Police. – Bernama

Lenggong Valley surging in popularity as heritage tourism site

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the number of tourists rose from 24,770 in 2022 to 114,182 last year, following continuous efforts to develop the area. "Tour guides saw their income increase by 237%, while accommodation providers recorded a 145% increase in revenue over the same period," he said at a dinner event here on Saturday (July 12). "This development has had a direct impact on the local economy, especially for rural communities, including traditional villages and the Orang Asli, who are now actively involved in tourism-related activities such as handicrafts, traditional food and homestay programmes,' he added. The dinner was in conjunction with the evaluation session of the Aspiring Lenggong Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) site. "Five of these sites have been recognised for their international geological value, encompassing unique and interrelated elements of geological heritage, biodiversity, culture and archaeology. "This diversity of resources makes Lenggong Valley not only an important site for research activities but also a competitive international tourism destination,' he said. He also said the state government is actively strengthening Lenggong Valley's international standing through collaborations with various international geopark networks and participation in global conferences, including with Japan, South Korea and Turkey. "Lenggong Valley is no longer just a tourism destination, it is now a centre for human capital development based on heritage,' he added. Lenggong Valley, designated as a Unescp World Heritage Site since 2012, spans 22sq km, about 1% of the total 2,248sq km area of the Aspiring Lenggong Unesco Global Geopark. The UGGp area covers five subdistricts – Durian Pipit, Temelong, Lenggong, Kenering and Gerik – with a total population of 61,039 people. – Bernama

Express bus driver, three passengers given summonses for not wearing seatbelts
Strong compliance: Express bus passengers buckling up under the new JPJ directive that came into effect on July 1. – BERNAMApic KUALA TERENGGANU: An express bus driver and three passengers in Terengganu have been issued summonses for not wearing seatbelts during a special nationwide operation by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) since Tuesday (July 1). Terengganu JPJ director Zamri Samion said a total of 85 express and tour buses were inspected following the enforcement of a directive which makes it compulsory for the drivers and passengers of express and tour buses to wear seatbelts. ALSO READ: Buckle up: JPJ deploys undercover tactics to catch errant bus drivers, passengers "We found the level of compliance was very good, where only four summonses were issued, to a bus driver and three express bus passengers," he said during the operation in Chendering near here on Thursday (July 3) night. To increase awareness and compliance, Zamri said the department would hold a meeting with express bus and tour bus operators next week for more intensive advocacy. Public health official charged with taking RM3,000 bribe

He claimed trial to the charge. – BERNAMApic JOHOR BARU: An assistant environmental health officer has claimed trial to a charge of accepting a RM3,000 bribe last year. Mohd Azrul Nazwan A Rani, 42, entered a plea of not guilty before Sessions judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail here on Thursday (June 26). He was alleged to have received the money from a restaurant manager as an inducement not to take legal action against the premises for breach of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009. Azrul Nazwan was charged with committing the offence at a restaurant on Jalan Meldrum here between 8pm and 9pm on July 25. The charge, under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, provides for jail of up to 20 years, and a fine not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. The accused was allowed bail of RM5,000 with one surety, ordered to report to the Johor Baru MACC office once a month, and surrender his passport to the court. The court set Aug 5 for mention. – Bernama
