$260k raised for vulnerable children, youth and families at charity golf event

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Senior Minister of State for Defence and Sustainability and the Environment Zaqy Mohamad during the tee-off at the BH-AMP Charity Golf and Dinner 2025 at Orchid Country Club on July 22. SINGAPORE - Over $260,000 has been raised to support vulnerable children, youth and families through a charity golf event and dinner on July 22 . The proceeds will support programmes by AMP Singapore , a non-profit organisation that serves the Muslim community, and the Singapore Children's Society . A portion of the funds will also be directed to book prizes for students pursuing communication, media or Malay studies in higher education. The charity event, organised by Malay-language daily Berita Harian and AMP Singapore, brought 96 golfers together at Orchid Country Club , where Senior Minister of State for Defence and Sustainability and the Environment Zaqy Mohamad launched the tee-off. Matching grants are expected to take total contributions from corporate and individual sponsors to $400,000 , surpassing the initial target of $300,000 , said SPH Media , which publishes BH, and AMP Singapore in a joint statement. With donations of $60,000 each , supermarket chain Sheng Siong Group and the Salleh Marican Foundation were the biggest donors at the event. Local bakery chain Bengawan Solo donated $20,000 , while construction firm AGSH Builders , travel agency Karva Travel Group and Maybank Singapore contributed $10,000 each. BH editor Nazry Mokhtar said the event reflects the newspaper's commitment to giving back to the community and standing by fellow Singaporeans during challenging times. He added that when the event was being planned, he was unsure if it would meet its fund-raising target, especially given the current tough economic climate. 'I am glad to say I was proven wrong. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and golfers, we have not only met - but surpassed - our goal,' said Mr Nazry. This is the first time BH has organised a charity golf event. It was held in conjunction with Singapore's 60th anniversary celebrations. AMP Singapore executive director Mohksin Rashid said his organisation's partnership with BH, along with the support of the event's donors, sponsors and golfers, is a reminder that collaboration across different segments of society can create lasting and positive change. Holding the event a day after Racial Harmony Day is deeply symbolic, said Singapore's former president Halimah Yacob , who was the guest of honour at the July 22 dinner . Madam Halimah added: 'This observance is a reminder of the strength we draw from our diversity. And tonight, we take it one step further - by turning harmony into action, and goodwill into tangible support for those who need it most.' 'By uplifting vulnerable families, supporting our children, and empowering youth through education, we are not only meeting today's needs - we are also shaping a brighter future for Singapore,' he said.

Forensic crisis in Malaysia: Delays jeopardise justice system

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is grappling with a critical shortage of forensic experts, particularly in pathology and anthropology, raising concerns over delays in criminal investigations and the integrity of the legal system. There are currently only 31 registered forensic pathologists in the country under the National Specialist Register. This equates to a ratio of one forensic expert for every 1.1 million Malaysians, based on the 2024 population of 34.1 million. Law Enforcement and Investigation Association chairman Arie Dwi Andika, said the shortage is causing delays in conducting autopsies for certain cases. "Post-mortem examinations can only be carried out at government hospitals. If conducted in private hospitals, they must be performed by specialists registered under Section 330 of the Criminal Procedure Code," he said. He said that the number of government forensic specialists is inconsistent and cannot meet the demand, especially for serious cases such as suspected suicides. "Because of this, for certain forensic cases — especially serious ones such as suicides — it takes a long time as we have to wait for the availability of a qualified officer." "As a result, there are forensic cases where the findings cannot be obtained immediately — either because the results are not yet ready, or sometimes because there is no officer available to be assigned to the case," he told BH. Arie emphasised that post-mortems cannot be rushed, as doing so risks compromising the findings. "Conducting a post-mortem depends on the staff on duty. One officer may be able to handle two or three bodies a day." "In emergencies such as natural disasters, forensic specialists from other hospitals will assist — but this all depends on how the hospital's schedule is arranged," he added. He said that strict procedures must be followed to maintain the quality of autopsy results. "This is not like treating an outpatient who comes in with a fever. The post-mortem process involves multiple steps and must be conducted thoroughly." He outlined five key stages: determining the cause of death, identifying the body, analysing biological evidence, forensic entomology to confirm time of death, and final body management. "This issue is not about how many bodies we can process in a day — all relevant aspects must be considered." "We ask the public to understand and leave this work to the hospital. At the same time, the hospital must also explain to the public the realities of medical forensics." "Clear communication is important so that the public does not misunderstand why the post-mortem process takes time," he said.

My wife has osteoporosis. Which car will be the most comfortable drive?

Dear Alex, We've owned our Renault Captur Esprit Alpine for three months and need to change it for a car with a softer ride. My wife's osteoporosis has worsened and the ride is too harsh for any reasonable degree of comfort. We'd like to retain a similar high seating position. What should we choose? – BH Dear BH, This is difficult to answer, because small SUVs such as Captur are generally not the smoothest; what's more, the Captur is toward the more comfortable end of the spectrum (although the large diameter wheels on the upmarket Esprit Alpine version won't help with the ride comfort). There are a couple of even more comfortable models, however. I suggest the Citroën C4. Nifty hydraulic bump stops means Citroën has been able to fit softer suspension, with the result that it floats over road imperfections in an uncanny way. Memory foam seats help dampen the bumps further. It's not quite as soft as the mirror-smooth hydropneumatic Citroëns of old, but you'd be amazed how close it gets – and it's actually slightly better over shorter, sharper bumps, which were always the older system's Achilles' heel. The C4 has just been facelifted and is now offered with the option of a mild hybrid petrol engine. This is the one to choose, because it doesn't have the potentially troublesome 'wet' timing belt of the pure petrol models (avoid anything badged as a PureTech). What's more, as with all Citroëns, you can now keep the C4 in warranty until it's eight years old, thanks to a new service-activated warranty offer – you just have to use a main dealer for annual servicing to extend cover by a year. Also worth a look is the Skoda Kamiq, the Czech firm's rival to the Captur. Like all Skodas, it's pretty comfy; I drove one from Edinburgh to London in a day and felt surprisingly fresh at journey's end. It's best as a lower-spec model with smaller diameter wheels to get the best possible ride quality, with the excellent 1.0-litre turbo engine that provides peppy performance.
