Pop-up market celebrates royal birthday
Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam's managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) Junaidi Masri touring the booths. - Borneo Bulletin BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: In conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's birthday celebration, the TMJE Pop-Up Market was launched at BIBD Connects on Thursday (July 18) afternoon at Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas. The event features the participation of local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as students from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (Unissa). Their involvement is aimed at providing meaningful exposure to real-world business environments while encouraging the development of practical skills and an entrepreneurial mindset among youth. The pop-up market will run until July 20 and then from July 25 to 27, operating daily from 4pm to 9pm, offering a vibrant mix of food, crafts and lifestyle products by Bruneian entrepreneurs. Present at the official opening were Unissa Assistant Rector (Student Affairs and Alumni) Dr Lilly Suzana Shamsu and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Junaidi Masri, along with members of BIBD's management and staff. The event is part of BIBD's broader efforts to promote community engagement and support Brunei's entrepreneurial ecosystem through accessible and inclusive initiatives. BIBD aims to create opportunities that uplift and empower others, especially local micro enterprises that form the backbone of the economy. Through platforms such as BIBD Connects, the bank seeks to nurture grassroots entrepreneurship and contribute to a more resilient, self-sustaining community. This event underscores BIBD's dedication to Responsible Entrepreneurship, the first pillar of its Sustainability Framework, which aims to foster ethical, inclusive, and resilient businesses that contribute to long-term national prosperity. Acting Head of Government Relations and Special Projects at BIBD Zulhazransa Emran, the guest of honour, signed the award letters on behalf of BIBD. This year, 15 new recipients were welcomed into the BIBD Seed Programme, representing a diverse range of backgrounds and agencies, including government ministries and the public – reflecting the BIBD Seed Programme's commitment to inclusivity and equal access to opportunity. Now in its 7th year, the programme began with a bootcamp in May, which all 15 participants successfully completed. Zulhazransa highlighted that the BIBD Seed Programme is more than just training, it is also about building confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose amongst our future business owners. He also commented that BIBD is dedicated to creating an ecosystem where entrepreneurs, especially women, can thrive and contribute to Brunei's development. The BIBD Seed Programme runs for six months, offering training and mentorship to equip participants with the skills and support needed to launch, manage and sustain their businesses. Upon completion, participants will present their business pitches and stand a chance to receive a business grant, supporting their entrepreneurial journey and driving contributions to the local economy. Bank Islam Brunei unveils development project in support of 12th National Development Plan goals

Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Datuk Seri Setia Dr Awang Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah was the guest of honour. In support of the national priorities outlined in the 12th National Development Plan, BIBD showcased its BIBD Connects Temburong initiative, an infrastructure project that exemplifies the bank's commitment to equitable growth and community development across all districts. Launched in October 2024 and expected to be completed by mid-2025, the BIBD Connects Temburong facility will serve as a central hub offering banking services, business spaces for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and a communal venue for local events. Designed with sustainability in mind, the multi-storey building will incorporate green technologies such as solar-powered lighting and rainwater harvesting – supporting both environmental protection and economic activity in the district. BIBD Assistant Managing Director 1 Mohammad Yusri Wahsalfelah said, 'BIBD Connects Temburong reflects our belief that national development must be inclusive, sustainable and people-focused. This project goes beyond infrastructure, creating opportunities for local businesses and communities to grow together. 'As we support the 12th National Development Plan, we are proud to contribute meaningfully towards Brunei Vision 2035 by building resilient eco-systems in every district.' Deputy Minister (Civil Service Governance) at the Prime Minister's Office Datuk Seri Paduka Mohd Riza Datuk Paduka Mohd Yunos and chairman of Cambridge International Financial Advisory (IFA) Professor Humayun Dar presented the award in recognition of BIBD's leadership in embedding sustainability across its operations, community engagements, and national development efforts.
