Ashok Gehlot hits out at BJP, NIA over delay in justice for slain Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal's family
Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central government and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for failing to deliver justice to tailor Kanhaiya Lal Sahu, nearly three years after his brutal murder in Udaipur. Marking the third death anniversary of Kanhaiya Lal, Gehlot paid tribute to the deceased tailor and expressed grief that justice continues to elude the victim's family. "It is a matter of great sadness that even after three years, he and his family have not got justice," the former Chief Minister said in a social media post. Gehlot accused the BJP of politicising the murder case without making any real effort to ensure accountability. "The BJP used this case politically but made no effort for justice, whereas this is a very clear case in which the entire crime and even the confession of the accused is recorded on video," he said. Highlighting the swift action taken under the previous Congress government in Rajasthan, Gehlot said, "During our government, the accused was arrested within just four hours. But that very night, the NIA took over the case. Since then, justice has remained pending." He criticised the NIA and the Central government for procedural delays in the murder case. "Only six out of 166 witnesses have testified in the last three years. No special court or fast-track court was constituted, despite the heinous nature of the crime. Today, this case is being heard under the additional charge of a CBI court," Gehlot said. Taking a jibe at the BJP government in the state, the former Chief Minister alleged that the BJP misled the people with false claims of compensation to the family of the slain tailor Kanhaiya Lal. "They spread confusion with propaganda of Rs 5 to Rs 50 lakh as compensation and used the incident to gather votes," Gehlot said. He also questioned the timing of a new film based on the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal up for release. "Everyone knows who stands to benefit politically from this film, but justice has still not been served," he said, adding that if the case had remained with the Rajasthan Police, the accused would likely have been convicted by now. On this day in June 2022, Kanhaiya Lal Sahu was brutally murdered in broad daylight at his tailoring shop in Udaipur, with his throat slit in a gruesome act that shocked the whole country. Three years later, his elder son, Yash Sahu, continues to live by the three solemn vows he took after his father's death, during a protest demanding justice. Yash has neither immersed his father's ashes nor worn shoes or slippers since the murder. He has also not cut his hair for the past three years. "Until the killers of my father are hanged, I will not break these vows," Yash says with quiet determination. The Kanhaiya Lal case is currently being investigated by the NIA.

'Secularism goes against Indian idea': Assam CM Himanta Biswa backs RSS call to remove words from Constitution; adds 'socialism never our vision'
NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday backed RSS's suggestion to restore the Preamble of the Constitution, saying that this is the right time to remove the legacies of the Emergency, including the words "secularism" and "socialism. " While launching a book titled The Emergency Diaries: Years That Forged a Leader at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati, Biswa said that these words were not part of the original Constitution and should be dropped, as secularism goes against the Indian idea of Sarva Dharma Sambhava, and socialism was never part of India's original economic vision. "Today, we launched the book The Emergency Diary, which talks about the struggle and resistance during the Emergency. When we talk about the Emergency, this is the right moment to remove its remaining impact, just like Prime Minister Modi is working to erase the legacy of colonial rule. Two major outcomes of the Emergency were the addition of the words secularism and socialism to our Constitution. I believe secularism goes against the Indian idea of Sarva Dharma Sambhava. This comes a day after Hosabale proposed that the words "socialist" and "secular" were forcibly added to the Constitution and should now be reconsidered. "The Emergency wasn't just a misuse of power, but an attempt to crush civil liberties. Millions were imprisoned, and freedom of the press was suppressed." He said that those who imposed the Emergency and trampled the Constitution and democracy have never apologised. The words "socialist", "secular", and "integrity" were inserted into the Preamble under the 42nd Constitutional Amendment moved by the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi government in 1976. The amendment changed the description of India in the Preamble from a "sovereign, democratic republic" to a "sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic." Earlier, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the inclusion of the words "socialist", "secular", and "integrity" to the Preamble of the Constitution. A bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said amendment power of the Parliament extends to the Preamble as well, and the fact that the Constitution was adopted in 1949 does not make any difference.

First-level EVM checks done ahead of Bihar assembly polls, faulty units sent for repairs to Hyderabad
The first-level checking (FLC) of electronic voting machines (EVMs) ahead of the Bihar assembly polls has found that 12.26% of ballot units, 4.96% of control units, and 4.67% of VVPATs were declared 'FLC Rejected' following technical scrutiny across the state. According to the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office, a total of 1,76,506 ballot units were checked, with 21,634 units failing to clear the inspection. Similarly, 6,389 out of 1,28,726 control units and 6,369 out of 1,36,317 VVPATs failed to clear the test. At the same time, officials said, a significant majority of the machines, '1,54,872 BU, 1,22,337 CU, and 1,29,948 VVPATs were found 'FLC OK'' and cleared for use in the upcoming polls. 'A total of 189 engineers from ECIL were deputed to carry out the checks across the state. The rejected machines are being sent to ECIL in Hyderabad for repairs, while the status of all units, whether cleared or rejected, was updated daily on the EMS 2.0 portal,' officials said. The FLC process, described by the Election Commission as 'a preliminary and crucial technical inspection process,' was conducted from May 2 to June 25 under the supervision of district election officers and ECIL engineers, with representatives from all major political parties invited to observe. The FLC process was monitored through live webcasting in all districts, allowing real-time oversight by the Election Commission and the CEO's office. 'After completion of FLC, the list of approved EVMs was provided to all recognised national and state parties at the district level,' officials said, stressing on transparency in the process. The electoral officers noted that all 12 recognised national and state-level political parties were informed about the FLC programme at least six times and urged to send their representatives. 'Over 200 letters were sent to parties that were not attending, urging them to participate,' sources said. The election body mentioned that the state-level meeting chaired by CEO Vinod Singh Gunjiyal on May 13 reviewed party participation and the progress of the FLC. 'Most major parties, including the BJP, Congress, RJD, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), CPI(M), CPI(ML), and BSP, actively participated across districts, while others such as the Aam Aadmi Party, RLSP, and RLJP had limited presence. The National People's Party did not participate in any district,' officials said. Officials noted that party participation was 'robust in 31 districts', including Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur, while seven districts – Banka, Darbhanga, Gaya, Gopalganj, Nalanda, Supaul and Kishanganj – saw comparatively fewer party representatives during the FLC. 'All parties expressed satisfaction with the quality and arrangements of the process,' the electoral officials said. They informed that the Election Commission of India and the CEO's office maintained 'intensive and continuous monitoring' of the process through live webcasting and field visits. '28 observers, including senior officials and EVM nodal officers from other states, were deployed for on-ground supervision,' EC officials said, with CEO Vinod Singh Gunjiyal personally inspecting FLC halls in Patna and Katihar. With the completion of the FLC, officials said Bihar is now 'fully prepared for the upcoming Assembly elections, reaffirming the commitment to a transparent and credible electoral process.'
