Devanahalli land: CM Siddaramaiah to take call on July 15

BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will take a final call on land aquisition for the proposed hi-tech Defence and Aerospace Park in Channaraypatna hobli of Devanahalli taluk on July 15, said Industry Minister MB Patil. 'The State government wants to balance industry and agriculture,'' he said. Patil told reporters on Sunday that there are two sets of people in Devanahalli -- some are against land acquisition, and some are ready to give their land. 'Some are even demanding Rs 3.5 crore per acre of land. There are different versions and the government is working on the pros and cons,'' he said. Patil had said on Saturday that some farmers, under the Channarayapatna Hobli Farmers' Association, had met the CM and told him they were ready to give 449 acres of land. 'The government gives value to farmers' voice and to others who are talking in the name of farmers,'' he said. Patil also said they are aware of builders who have acquired land in and around Devanahalli. 'We know how much of it belongs to political leaders. We know who is behind this agitation. There is a demand to save agricultural activities in and around Devanahalli. The government wants to make it a permanent agriculture zone, some are opposing that too,'' he added. Patil said some writers have written to the party high command against land acquisition, which we do not oppose. 'They have the right to protest in a democracy. We are taking experts' opinion,'' he said. 'BJP sending agents' Patil alleged the BJP is eying 50 Congress MLAs and is sending agents. The Congress has 140 MLAs and any defection needs 80 to 90 MLAs. No one is a fool in the Congress to shift parties. Earlier, 17 MLAs had jumped to the BJP, which will not happen now. In fact, BJP-JDS MLAs are trying to join Congress,'' he said.

CM Siddaramaiah demands rollback of train fare hike

BENGALURU: CM Siddaramaiah on Tuesday urged the Centre to roll back the railway fare hike. 'This fare hike must be rolled back immediately. Don't make people's daily travel another jumla. Let the trains run, not the people's patience,' he stated taking to 'X'. The CM said daily wage workers, students, small traders, and the common man are struggling under rising prices. 'When we increased milk prices to help our farmers, BJP shouted on the streets, and called it anti-people. But now, when the BJP-led Centre hikes railway fares, there is deafening silence. Why? Because this hike doesn't help farmers or the poor, it only helps the BJP government fill its own coffers,' he said. Meanwhile, AICC general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala on Tuesday lashed out at the Centre for increasing railway passenger fare and toll on highways. He also said the hike also affects motorists on the Electronics City Elevated Expressway in Bengaluru. He mocked Karnataka BJP for keeping mum over price rise and asked them to insist for the roll back the hike. He urged PM Narendra Modi to withdraw the hikes immediately without burdening the masses. 'From roads to rails to the kitchen, BJP is road-rolling India's common man with unprecedented price rise breaking the backbone of India's masses. The BJP government promised bullet trains, but gave us derailment, burning coaches, and broken hopes. While the tracks lie in disrepair and passengers hang on to life, they've silently hiked tolls and squeezed every paisa from commuters', he alleged while addressing a press meet. 'If Karnataka's BJP-JDS MPs and MLAs can't raise their voice against Delhi's loot, they should raise their hands and resign. You can't sit in power and play mute while the state gets looted — either defend Karnataka or vacate your seat for someone who will,' he suggested.

We will win more seats and form the government under the leadership of our leader, DK Shivakumar.' HDK can neither win nor form government, asserts Shivakumar

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday hit out at Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy saying he will neither win nor form a government in Karnataka. Speaking to reporters at his Sadashivanagar residence, he said, 'Kumaraswamy had called on his supporters to get ready for a BJP-JDS government. I had then replied to him stating that I will present him a suit if he won the election and formed the government in 2028.' He was replying to a reporter who Kumaraswamy's statement that he wasn't that poor to take clothes from him. 'The Housing Minister has only transferred the quota of minorities from rural areas to urban area as the number of minorities is low in the rural areas. The quota is not being snatched from anyone to give it to minorities,' he clarified. 'As per the Sachar Committee report, minorities were given quota in rural areas also. But the quota was not being utilised as the number of minorities in rural areas was low. It is now being transferred from rural areas to urban areas. We are not snatching away anything from anyone. As much as 90% of the SC/STs have been given homes. The government can't provide funds unless they lay the foundation for the house,' he explained. 'Opposition parties are politicising this, let them do it. The government can't incur losses due to flats lying vacant. We had given the opportunity for SC/STs and their quota was over. We then transferred it to backward classes and general categories. We are a government which believes in equal life and equal share philosophy. Let them discuss our work in the Assembly session,' he added. Asked about B R Patil's accusation that houses are allotted under Rajiv Gandhi housing scheme only if bribes are paid, he said he was not aware of it.

Congress names four nominees for legislative council; eyes Lakhan Jarkiholi's crucial vote

BENGALURU: The Congress has announced the party's four nominees for the State Legislative Council. They are: Dinesh Amin Mattu, media advisor to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah; Arathi Krishna, deputy chairperson, Karnataka NRI Forum; Ramesh Babu, chairman, the party media cell; and Sagar, Dalit leader. The names were cleared by the party high command. They would be sworn-in after getting the assent of governor. With their swearing-in, Congress will have 37 members in the 75-member House, the same as the BJP-JDS combine. All eyes are now on the independent, Lakhan Jarkiholi, brother of minister Satish Jarkiholi. Lakhan's vote could shatter or solidify the balance of power in the House. If the Congress wins him over, the party will seize both the chairman and deputy chairman posts, currently held by the BJP. It was Lakhan's brother, Ramesh Jarkiholi, who toppled the Congress coalition by defecting to the BJP. Ramesh might yet convince Lakhan to back the BJP-JDS alliance, ensuring status quo. There has been a precedent of having a person from another party as chairman of the Upper House. When Ramakrishna Hegde was the CM, Congress member Rehman Khan was chairman for about two years. If the Congress does get Lakhan's vote, the question is who will become chairman and deputy chairman. Veteran BK Hariprasad was once seen as a frontrunner. Now he has been elevated as the party general secretary for Haryana. There is no clarity on what his next role could be. Minister Bose Raju, Chief Whip Saleem Ahmed and former minister Nasir Ahmed could emerge as choices, as sources say the party would assign roles according to its priorities.
