Bengali migrant workers identifying Rohingya, claims Samik
Kolkata: With Trinamool upping the ante against BJP-governed states for harassing Bengali migrant workers, Bengal BJP claimed on Monday that migrant workers from the state were identifying Rohingya who had taken shelter there. Commenting on BSF's role in preventing infiltration, he added: "India has a porous border with Bangladesh. Infiltration cannot be stopped if there is no combined operation of Centre and state police and if there is no political consensus on the issue." Meanwhile, Bengal BJP netas on Monday pointed out that a systematic revision of the electoral rolls, expected sometime next month, would be able to cleanse the voters' list in the state. "The chief minister of Bengal will not be able to manipulate the voters' list the way she wants to and conduct polls in 2026. She will soon see what happens to Rohingya, fake voters and illegal immigrants from Bangladesh," Bhattacharya said. "People have seen what happened during the panchayat polls. They actually want NRC in Bengal now," he added.

The father of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder victim spoke out against the alleged gangrape case in Kolkata's law college, expressing his frustration and disappointment with the recurring incidents of violence. He accused the government of having a significant role to play in preventing such incidents and that the accused should be severely punished. He said, "Such incidents are happening again and again. After what happened with my daughter, many people came out on the streets in protest. Even after that, such incidents continue to occur. People inside the college are committing such incidents. The government has a significant role in this, which is why all these incidents are happening. All three people arrested are from the TMC, so this political party should ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The accused should be severely punished." Addressing a press conference, Shashi Panja said, "There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs. Trinamool Congress Student wing is not teaching the students to rape. The police took immediate action, and within 12 hours of the complaint, three people were caught. They are in custody, and the investigation is on. Their mobile phones have been seized, and the victim's statement has been taken. She has named the accused. It has been taken seriously. The BJP cannot even think the way Kolkata police swung into action. They started maligning since such swift action is missing in the BJP-ruled states. If they want to be in Bengal as a responsible Opposition, then they have to behave responsibly." A female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba on Wednesday evening. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for the purpose of a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused, and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested on Thursday, near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation.

The Kolkata police, being panned for arresting social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, have claimed that the controversial action was taken after " duly investigating and adhering to legal procedures". The police claimed they acted lawfully against the 22-year-old woman as she had been sharing offensive content that promoted communal hatred. The police said Sharmistha Panoli wasn't arrested for expressing patriotism or personal belief. "Kolkata Police acted lawfully according to the procedure established by law. The accused was not arrested for expressing patriotism or for personal belief; legal actions were taken for sharing offensive content which promotes hatred among the communities," Kolkata Police posted on Facebook on Sunday. The police said all legal procedures laid down by the law were adhered to. They claimed in a post on Facebook on Sunday that they had issued notices to the influencer but she was allegedly found to be absconding. "Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court, following which she was apprehended lawfully from Gurgaon during the day. She was thereafter produced before the appropriate Magistrate and was granted transit remand as per due process of law. Later, the court sent her to judicial custody," it said. In her videos, Panoli had called out Bollywood actors for being silent on Operation Sindoor. The police termed the narrative claiming she was arrested unlawfully, "mischievous and misleading". "Some social media accounts are spreading false information that Kolkata Police has unlawfully arrested a law student for opposing Pakistan. This narrative is mischievous and misleading," the Kolkata Police added. They said they had filed a case on allegations that she posted a video which was "insulting to the religious belief of a class of citizens of India and amounted to promoting disharmony and hatred between different communities". Hate speech and abusive language should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, the Kolkata Police stated. BJP West Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar has alleged that the police's action was rooted in the state government's policy of appeasement and "vote-bank vendetta". "Sharmistha Panoli, 22, a law student, arrested for a now-deleted video and a public apology. No riots. No unrest. Yet Mamata Banerjee's police acted overnight — not for justice, but for appeasement. 'Over the next two days, I will be attending programmes in Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh," the Prime Minister wrote on his official X handle on Wednesday. 'The development works that will commence over the next two days will bring innumerable benefits for people and strengthen our resolve to build a Viksit Bharat," he added. PM MODI IN WEST BENGAL TODAY In West Bengal's Cooch Behar, PM Modi will on Thursday lay the foundation stone of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project for Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts. The Rs 1,010 crore project will supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households, more than 100 commercial establishments and industries, and establish around 19 CNG stations. The same was confirmed after the Prime Minister wrote on X, 'It is always a delight to be among the people of West Bengal. At a programme in Alipurduar in the afternoon tomorrow, 29th May, the foundation stone for City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts will be laid. This will benefit several households, improve the environment and provide job opportunities for people." Following the event, PM Modi will also address a public meeting in Bengal's Alipurduar. 'I will be addressing a BJP West Bengal public meeting in Alipurduar tomorrow afternoon. Over the last decade, the various schemes of the NDA Government have been greatly appreciated by the people of West Bengal. At the same time, they are tired of the corruption and poor administration of the TMC," his X post read. The terminal will cater to one crore passengers annually. In the city, he will also lay the foundation stone of the new civil enclave at Bihta Airport, a Rs 1,410 crore project aimed at serving the rapidly expanding educational and residential areas near Patna. 'Tomorrow, 29th May is a landmark day for the people of Bihar and Patna in particular. This would be Modi's second visit to Sikkim as the Prime Minister. 'The PM will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of several projects, including a 500-bed district hospital worth over Rs 750 crore in Namchi, passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling in Pelling in Gyalshing district, statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji at Atal Amrit Udyan in Gangtok, among others," an official release stated. He will also release a commemorative coin, souvenir coin and stamp of 50 years of statehood, it stated. 'The PM's visit has been preponed and he would be landing at Libing Helipad at 9.45 am and his motorcade would reach Paljor Stadium at 10 am. He would participate in 'Sikkim@50' celebrations till 11.30 am," Gangtok's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tenzing Loden Lepcha told reporters in Gangtok. He said that elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth conduct of the grand celebrations of 50th year of Sikkim's integration with India as the 22nd state. Lepcha said that the main function at Paljor Stadium will be from 10 am to 11.30 am, followed by a brief private meeting till 11.45 am. PM MODI IN UTTAR PRADESH ON FRIDAY On May 30 (Friday), Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth about Rs 20,900 crore in UP's Kanpur. The move aims to boost the region's infrastructure and connectivity, an official statement stated. He will launch the Chunniganj Metro Station to Kanpur Central Metro Station section of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, worth more than Rs 2,120 crore. It will include 14 planned stations with five new underground stations integrating key city landmarks and commercial hubs into the metro network. Besides, he will also inaugurate road-widening and strengthening work of the GT Road, the statement mentioned. In order to boost the power generation capacity in the region, Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone (from Kanpur) of a 220 kV substation in Sector 28 at Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), Gautam Buddh Nagar. He will also inaugurate 132 kV substations worth over Rs 320 crore at Ecotech-8 and Ecotech-10 in Greater Noida. PM Modi will inaugurate a 660 MW Panki Thermal Power Extension Project in Kanpur worth over Rs 8,300 crore. He will also launch three 660 MW units of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project worth over Rs 9,330 crore, the statement read. Rail over bridges over Panki Power House Railway Crossing and Panki Dham Crossing on Panki Road at Kalyanpur Panki Mandir in Kanpur will also be inaugurated. Besides this, a 40 MLD (million litres per day) tertiary treatment plant at Bingawan in Kanpur worth over Rs 290 crore will also be inaugurated. It will enable the reuse of treated sewage water. PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for the widening and strengthening of Gauria Pali Marg for industrial development in Kanpur, and widening and strengthening of the road to connect Narwal Mode (AH-1) on Prayagraj Highway to Kanpur Defence Node (four lane) under Defence Corridor. He will also distribute certificates and cheques to the beneficiaries of PM Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojna, National Livelihood Mission and PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, according to the release.
