Timeframe: When Anderson Silva got booed in Abu Dhabi at first UFC event in the Middle East
UFC returns to Abu Dhabi for Fight Night on Saturday - 15 years ago after the Mixed Martial Arts promotion came to the Middle East for the first time. UFC 112 was held as an outdoor event at Ferrari World on Yas Island, with middleweight champion Anderson Silva headlining as he defended his title against Demian Maia after the original opponent, Vitor Belfort, withdrew because of an injury. Yet it was the other fights that got much more traction. BJ Penn, the celebrated lightweight champion, took on No 1-ranked challenger Frankie Edgar. It was quite the coup for Abu Dhabi as Silva and Penn were two of the strongest pound-for-pound MMA fighters at the time. The event was staged at the 12,000-seat outdoor concert arena at Ferrari World. In a rarity for the sport back then, UFC 112 would feature not one, but two title fights. 'Abu Dhabi is our first outdoor event and we are very happy we could deliver what fans around the world will recognise as a stacked card featuring the sport's biggest stars,' UFC chief executive Dana White said at the time. Down the card, Renzo Gracie, a renowned Brazilian jiu-jitsu pioneer, made his UFC debut, going up against Matt Hughes, a former two-time welterweight champion. Excitement built throughout the week in the lead-up to fight night. Several activities along the Corniche climaxed with the official weigh-in at Marina Mall the day before the fighters took to the octagon. It drew a large turnout. As for the action itself, Mark Munoz's second-round victory against Kendall Grove – by technical knockout – won 'fight of the night' on the 10-bout card. DaMarques Johnson claimed 'knockout of the night' by dispatching Brad Blackburn brutally in the third. In the evening's fourth and final fight, Rafael dos Anjos earned 'submission of the night' as his armbar in the second round caused Terry Etim to submit. Each fighter took home $75,000 (Dh275,000) in bonuses. In the major bouts, Gracie succumbed to Hughes in the third, while Penn suffered a surprise loss to Edgar, relinquishing his lightweight belt on a unanimous decision. A tightly contested bout, it was Penn's first defeat in that division in eight years. Much to everyone's frustration, the headline act failed to live up to its billing. Undefeated in his previous 10 UFC outings, Silva ran out a unanimous winner on points, only the second time in 11 fights that he needed the judges' scorecards. However, Silva's performance left those in attendance frustrated. Seeking a UFC record of six title defences, he rarely engaged with Maia, taunting his opponent through the opening rounds. Soon, the Abu Dhabi crowd switched their support to the underdog. As Maia looked to take the fight to the ground, Silva's defence staved off his challenge, but did little to capture the fans' attention. At one point in the fifth, the referee ordered Silva to take the fight to Maia. Speaking afterwards in his native Portuguese, the victorious champion attempted to apologise above a crescendo of boos. 'I'm sorry,' Silva said. 'I wasn't as humble as I should have been. I will be better next time.' By that stage, White had already left. Disappointed with what he was witnessing, he departed the arena during the fourth round, foregoing his usual post-fight routine of presenting the champion their belt. In the press conference afterwards, White fumed: 'It was a disgrace. To end this night the way we did was embarrassing. I apologise to everyone who came to the fight.'

UFC legend BJ Penn arrested again after violating ‘impostor' mother's restraining order
UFC legend BJ Penn has been arrested in Hawaii, reportedly for the fourth time in two weeks, after violating a restraining order that is believed to have been approved for his mother. In late May, Penn posted on Instagram to claim that a 'fake' version of his mother – an 'imposter identity theif' [sic] – had 'tried to get me to assault her'. 'She has already walked around my house with a gun when I asked her about my finances and my families [sic] finances,' wrote Penn, 46, who last competed in mixed martial arts in 2019, falling to a seventh straight defeat. Penn, a former two-weight UFC champion, has had numerous run-ins with the law over the years, and Thursday's arrest was his fourth in two weeks, per MMA Fighting. A statement from the Hawaii Police Department on Thursday (12 June) read: 'Hawaii Island police arrested and charged 46-year-old Jay Dee 'BJ' Penn on Thursday, June 12, 2025, for violating a temporary restraining order. 'Upon responding to the area of Pu'u'eo Street in Hilo at 11.15am Thursday morning to investigate a report, officers learned that Penn had entered within a residence, violating the terms of a temporary restraining order in which Penn is the respondent. 'Penn was located within the area and arrested without incident. He was processed at the Hilo Police Station and released after posting bail, which was set at $3,000. He is slated to make his initial appearance in family court on Friday June 13 2025, at 11.30am.' While the statement did not indicate whose residence Penn had entered, his mother Lorraine Shin recently had a protective order approved, barring him from the home they shared. It was reported by MMA Fighting that Shin said in a prior statement to police: 'I believe my son is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome [a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter]. 'He believes I'm an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets. In the best interest for my safety, I ask the court for a six month [temporary restraining order] and have my son ordered to get medical treatment or other source of therapy.'

UFC legend BJ Penn arrested for violating restraining order weeks after being charged for abusing mom, 79
Hawaii police have arrested UFC legend BJ Penn for violating a temporary restraining order weeks after being arrested over allegations of abuse against his 79-year-old mother. Last month, Penn was arrested twice and charged with abusing his mother, Lorraine Shin, who described her son to police as delusional and subsequently filed for a temporary restraining order. 'He believes I'm an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets,' Shin said in the order, as reported by Big Island Now. It's unclear if Shinn's restraining order is the one Penn is accused of violating before his latest arrest. Daily Mail has reached out to Hawaii police for further information. He is due back in court on Friday at 11:30am local time after posting $3,000 bail. Officers say they responded to an address on Pu'u'eo Street in Hilo, Hawaii after learning Penn entered the residence in violation of the temporary restraining order. He was arrested without incident, according to police. Last month the 46-year-old Penn shared footage on Instagram of police arresting him at his home, with the video showing cops dragging him out of his bed before leading him away in handcuffs. It was later revealed that the former two-weight UFC champion was booked into jail in Hilo at around 9:40pm that evening on a charge of 'abuse family or household member: offensive physical contact.' He was eventually released on $2,000 bail at 1:48am Monday. Penn was arrested over multiple run-ins he had with his mother, whom he allegedly claimed to be an imposter. Police said the woman told them he 'took her mail and then shined a bright flashlight in her eyes when asked for the mail to be returned.' She then claimed she was shoved against a car by Penn when she tried to move the light away from her eyes. The fighter was arrested over the allegations before being released with a warning citation after posting bond. That citation ordered him to stay away from the alleged victim. However, cops said he violated it just hours later when he showed up to the woman's house early the next morning. Penn was therefore arrested for a second time on another charge of abuse of family or household member. After leaving custody, the Hawaii-born American initially posted a clip of officers confronting him in his bedroom, before he shared more footage of the alleged bust-up with an elderly woman which led to his first arrest. Penn claimed in the caption that the woman is a 'fake Lorraine Shin' - which is his mother's name. Lorraine also appears to be 79 years old, according to public records. The video in question seemingly captures someone waving a light, while a woman can be heard repeatedly screaming: 'Hit me!' Penn added in the caption: '[She] has tried to get me to assault her and she has already walked around my house with a gun when I asked her about my finances and my families finances. This lady knows nothing about business and is a murdering theif [sic]. The REAL LORRAINE SHIN MAKES THIS MORON LOOK PARKED'. Penn's mother since filed for a restraining order against her son after telling a court that she is convinced her son suffers from a rare psychological disorder known as Capgras syndrome - a delusional misidentification syndrome where a person falsely believes a person close to them has been replaced by an identical impostor. Shin alleges that she has endured 'extreme psychological abuse' at the hands of the ex-UFC star after being accused of being an imposter who 'killed his family' and took on his mother's identity. Penn has previously posted a series of disturbing social media posts about his mother Lorraine and brothers Jay Dee, Reagan, and Kalani Mamazuka. 'Hilo Police Department I need your help. My mother… my brothers… we're (sic) all murdered and I need you to investigate,' he recently wrote on Instagram. 'I need you to investigate these guys get these people out of my house and my off my properties.' He claimed they had been replaced by imposters who are now trying to 'steal everything from his family'. Penn competed in the UFC between 2001 and 2019 and won world titles in two divisions before being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn arrested again amid family concerns
June 2 - UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn was arrested Friday in Hawaii, his home state, for the third time in six days as his family airs their concerns about his mental health. Penn was previously arrested on May 25 and 26, both times on charges of abuse of a family/household member. Penn's mother, Lorraine Shin, filed a temporary restraining order against him, and the May 26 arrest was because he violated the restraining order. Penn was due to appear in court as a condition of his bail and he failed to do so, resulting in the third arrest Friday. Penn argued unsuccessfully that he did not come to court because he had COVID-19, according to KHON2. Penn also requested a restraining order against his mother, which was denied. Penn has claimed repeatedly on Instagram that his family was secretly murdered and replaced by impostors, which is the main symptom of a rare psychiatric order called Capgras delusion. "I believe my son (B.J. Penn) is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome (a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter)," Shin said in a statement to authorities. "He believes I'm an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets." Shin has claimed in court filings that Penn has stolen belongings from her bedroom and put glue into the deadbolt on her bedroom door in an attempt to keep her from entering it. She further alleged that Penn used a bright flashlight to temporarily blind her when she wanted to call police, and he grabbed her arms and shoved her against the side of a car, causing a sharp pain in her back. --Field Level Media
