Private varsity donates Rs 50 lakh to build govt-run girls' hostel

Vijayapura: Bharatiya Lingayat Development Educational (BLDE) Deemed to be University donated Rs 50 lakh to Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women's University (KSAWU) in Vijayapura to build a girls' hostel . Industry minister MB Patil, also president of BLDE, announced the contribution after learning about the shortage of hostels. The gesture drew praise from educationists and the public alike. Dr Raghavendra Kulkarni, registrar of BLDE Deemed to be University, told TOI that minister Patil participated in the International Women's Day ceremony at KSAWU in March. "Officials of KSAWU put forward a demand for a hostel for women research scholars, who struggle to stay in Vijayapura. Since many students are poor, Patil forwarded the memorandum to govt. Meanwhile, seeing the fate of students, he took immediate measures to offer Rs 50 lakh to construct 10 rooms for students under the Institute Social Responsibility (ISR) scheme," he added. Acting vice-chancellor Prof Shantadevi T said, "There was a need for a hostel for PhD students. Hence, we requested the minister to get help from govt. However, BLDE offered it in the interest of students, and we are thankful to them. As of now, we are considering assigning the construction work to BLDE itself. However, there is a need to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between both varsities, and we can conclude after getting approval from our syndicate in a meeting to be held within a week," she stated. Kulkarni said if the women's varsity wants, the construction and maintenance section of the BLDE Association is ready to take up the construction. Prof VB Maganur, former acting VC of KSAWU, commented that it's a good development that a private varsity is helping a govt varsity in the interests of women empowerment. "During our tenure as VC, many girl students struggled for accommodation due to lack of hostels. We arranged accommodation in rented buildings, but security was a concern. Despite all sanctions in recent years, the women's university still suffers from lack of funds, and govt should sanction the required funds," he added.
