FDA Drops REMS Programs for Some CAR-Ts

Using chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies for blood cancer should be less burdensome following labeling updates from the FDA. Specifically, the FDA removed the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program requirements from two BCMA-directed CAR T-cell therapies for multiple myeloma — ciltacabtagene autoleucel (Carvykti; Janssen) and idecabtagene vicleucel (Abecma; BMS) — and one CD19-directed therapy for lymphoma, lisocabtagene maraleucel (Breyanzi; BMS). In a June 26 letter to Janssen explaining the move, the agency said that 'the established management guidelines and extensive experience of the medical hematology/oncology community in diagnosing and managing the risks of cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurologic toxicities across products in the class of BCMA- and CD19-directed autologous CAR T cell immunotherapies' means that REMS programs are no long necessary to ensure safe use. The agency further streamlined the labels of the two BMS therapies by reducing requirements to stay near a health facility after treatment from 4 to 2 weeks and by dropping driving restrictions after treatment from 8 to 2 weeks. In a press statement, BMS applauded the 'class-wide label updates that will help ease known barriers to treatment and administration while maintaining patient safety.' The company also noted that recent studies have made it clear that the 'vast majority of serious adverse events' with CAR T-cell therapy occur within the first 2 weeks of infusion. 'Today's announcement reduces some of the most onerous requirements that may have previously discouraged patients, particularly those who live far from a treatment center, from seeking the potentially transformational effects of cell therapy,' said Sally Werner, RN, BSN, CEO of Cancer Support Community, in the press release. BMS will not participate in general strike on July 9, says All India Organising Secretary

The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) will not participate in the All India General Strike on July 9, the call for which was given by various trade unions, says B. Surendran, All India Organising Secretary of BMS. He was in the city as a part of a tour of North Andhra on Monday. While other trade unions are totally against the Labour Codes, brought out by the Centre, BMS welcomes certain clauses like the wage code and social security code, which are beneficial to workers, Mr. Surendran said in a chat with The Hindu. At the same time, BMS is opposed to the Industrial Relations Code and the Occupational Safety Health and Working Conditions Code, which are detrimental to the interests of workers, he said. 'Contract system' He felt that the legalisation of the 'contract system' under different names such as 'outsourcing workers' and contract workers was not suitable for India, which has the highest population. The government should realise that human capital is as important as money capital to run an industry or factory. Workers require permanent jobs and forming a trade union to safeguard their interests is a fundamental right of workers. BMS has sent its objections to the Union Minister of Labour, he said. 'Overstaffing in VSP' Replying to query, Mr. Surendran said that the Centre was taking fiscal measures to tide over the losses in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). The officials had recruited much more than the required number of contract workers. The production at the plant was not affected even after a few thousands of workers were terminated, indicating that there was huge overstaffing, he said. He, however, said that the manner in which the workers were asked to leave, had caused discontent among them. The non-involvement of trade unions in the process, and failure to give certain benefits to VRS employees was another cause for concern among the staff, he said and expressed optimism that VSP would not be privatised.

BMS has succeeded in drawing attention to concerns of Indian international workers and students at ILO, says Surendran

The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), which led the Indian workers delegation to the 113th International Labour Conference of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), held in Geneva from June 2 to 13, has succeeded in drawing attention to challenges faced by Indians abroad, national organising secretary of BMS B. Surendran said. A total of 5,164 members from 187 countries, including 46 from India, participated in the conference, Mr. Surendran, in the city on Monday (June 30) as part of his tour of North Andhra, said. He held a meeting with BMS leaders from A.P. — MVS Naidu, Anil Kumar, K. Lova Reddy and Bhavani Shankarudu. 'We had raised the demand for international portability of social security funds of Indian workers, who return to their motherland, after serving abroad for sometime. Currently their funds are not being transferred when they return home. We had also sought bringing out international parameters for skill certification of Indian students, studying abroad, who are being forced to study for some more time on return to India,' Mr Surendran told The Hindu during an interaction. 'Children of workers are going to Russia, China and other countries for higher studies and on their return to India after completing their studies, they are facing difficulties in clearing one more qualifying examination for taking up jobs in the country. We had also appealed to the global leaders to regulate AI and other emerging technologies and confine them to critical areas like space and health sciences. We had succeeded in raising global problems as a country delegation,' he explained. The Director-General of the ILO appreciated the Indian social security model, and appealed to other member nations to study it and strive to implement the best practices in their respective nations. A total of 31 crore workers in the unorganised sector have already enrolled in the e-shram portal of the Government of India. The details of those who register on the portal would be maintained in the National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW) and e-shram cards would be issued to them to enable them avail the benefits of various government schemes. The social protection coverage has doubled from 24.4% in 2021 to 48.4% in 2024 for workers in the unorganised sector. This is the second highest in the world after the United States of America (USA).

Over 75,000 students, parents participate in UGCET Seat Allocation Manthana

Aiming to streamline the admission process for professional courses, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) organised the 'UGCET-2025 Seat Allocation Manthana' programme on Saturday at various government engineering colleges across the state, which received an overwhelming response. Higher Education Minister .M.C. Sudhakar inaugurated the programme at a VTU-affiliated engineering college in Chintamani andinteracted with students and parents, answering questions raised during the session. KEA executive director H. Prasanna participated in the event at the Government Engineering College in Hassan. Each participating college had one KEA representative and the necessary technical staff assigned. Due to the large turnout, multiple sessions were conducted to facilitate smooth participation. In Bengaluru, the Manthana event was held at BMS, Ambedkar, and SKIT engineering colleges. At BMS college of engineering alone, more than 10,000 people attended, prompting the use of 19 rooms to conduct simultaneous sessions. Commonly asked questions such as 'How does counselling work?', 'How to choose a college?', and 'How to do option entry?' were explained through video demonstrations detailing the entire seat allocation process. Participants were also cautioned against falling prey to fraudsters promising seat allotments through dishonest means. More than 75,000 students and parents directly benefited from this interactive programme. Mr. Prasanna informed that all the videos used during the Manthana programme will be uploaded to the KEA Vikasana YouTube channel.
