BMW M5 is so good I had to test it twice and jumped at the chance to drive this Bumblebee Beast again
NOW the dust has finally settled on Bumblebee 1000's Talladega Nights road trip and life has returned to normal. I can reflect on another amazing adventure and an awesome time spent behind the wheel of the ballistic new BMW M5. 6 BIG, BEAUTIFUL, BALLISTIC, 727BHP BUMBLEBEE WEAPON: The M5 once again was the perfect choice to take part in Bumblebee 1000's latest charity road trip Credit: Jacob Liggett I drove the M5 at Bumblebee's first road trip of 2025 in April, and was trying to source the new M2 for this one in June, but that didn't work out. However I was more than happy to be back behind the wheel of this beast again as it's the most powerful M5 ever, producing a supercar-rivalling 727bhp and impressive 1,000Nm of torque. And it's also the first plug-in hybrid M5 ever, with a huge 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 crammed under the bonnet that works alongside a 145kw electric motor and 18.6kWh battery. But all of the above adds weight, a lot of it, making it the heaviest M5 ever too — weighing in at 2,510kg — so with a full tank of petrol, four passengers on-board plus the driver, you could be tipping the scales at three tonnes. 6 SOUND OFF: Despite its quad exhausts the M5 could do with being lot louder Credit: Jacob Liggett Key Facts: BMW G90 M5 Cost: From €137,055 Engine: 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8, 145kW electric motor Power: 727bhp Torque: 1,000Nm 0-100kph: 3.5 seconds Top Speed: 305kph Economy: 48.7mpg Real world: 30.2mpg Emissions: 43g/km Rivals: Mercedes-AMG E53, Audi RS7, Porsche Panamera 6 SUPERCAR POWER: M5's 4.4-litre, twin-turbo V8 and hybrid system produces 727bhp Credit: Paddy McGrath It can launch from 0-100kph in just 3.5 seconds, and with the optional M Drivers Package fitted, max out at 305kph, which makes the new M5's performance figures all the more impressive. BMW has done a great job trying to hide the weight, and it's only when cornering hard or under heavy braking that you really notice its heaviness. My test car came fitted with the optional M Carbon-Ceramic Brakes that are incredible, as is the Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering. This allows the rear wheels to turn by up to 1.5° allowing the M5 to become a lot more nimble and sure-footed than you'd think for a heavy, five-seater saloon. The battery takes 2 hours 30 minutes to fully charge providing you with a handy 70km electric-only range too, plus as the M5 is a PHEV, the annual road tax is only €140. BMW quote a 148.7mpg figure, and impressive stats like those are possible with a fully charged battery and very gentle driving. But with so much power available and when driving in an environment like Bumblebee, the big Beemer is a thirsty beast. 6 COOL SEATS: BMW's curved dual screens take centre stage and there's heated and cooled front seats Credit: Paddy McGrath After the road trip ended, the fun was over and I returned home from the Portlaoise Plaza at a more leisurely pace. And here I recorded 30.2mpg, not bad for a car that has a top speed of over 300km. It could be louder though. That big V8 should really be allowed to sing, but sadly the M5 is too quiet for its own good. Inside, BMW's brilliant curved dual screens dominate the dash, and like the exterior, there is carbon trim everywhere. Read more on the Irish Sun The front sports seats are superb, heated and air-cooled, with an illuminated M badge and there are heated seats in the back. The M5 saloon starts at €137,055 and the Touring model is €139,515 but that's before you start ticking boxes and there are loads of options to choose from.

2026 BMW M5 Touring Sinks Deeper Into Six Figures
M5 Wagon Whips The Wallet In 2026 The BMW M5 Touring arrived less than a year ago, and although it has an uncommon body style, plenty of buyers have gravitated to it quickly. Unfortunately, its magnetism may have to wane slightly with the 2026 model, as order guide data obtained by CarsDirect indicates a higher base price for the new model year. While the current 2025 model sells for $121,500 (before delivery or any options), the 2026 M5 Touring will reportedly retail for no less than $123,900, an increase of $2,400. What do you get for the extra cash? Just a new VIN, it seems. 0:06 / 0:09 2025 Audi S3 vs Mercedes-AMG CLA 35: the executive decision Watch More The M5's Price Increase Is Not Unique Source: BMW The new MSRP represents an increase of 2% and falls in line with a previous report from the same publication, which indicated that BMW's pricing would be increasing by as much as 3% from July, depending on the model. Although BMW will doubtless be impacted by new tariffs on imported vehicles, the increased prices don't appear to be a direct result thereof, as this is no more aggressive a price adjustment than we've seen from the Bavarian brand in years gone by. MY2025 MY2026 Difference BMW M5 Sedan $119,500 $121,900 +$2,400 BMW M5 Touring $121,500 $123,900 +$2,400 Indeed, the M5 sedan went from $119,500 for the 2025 model year to $121,900 for 2026. With the Touring getting a similar price bump, the difference between the two body styles remains $2,000. If you want an M car with four doors for less than six figures, you'll have to spring for the 2026 M3. M5 Touring Success Is Good For Buyers Source: BMW With no updates for 2026, buyers won't be getting anything more for the extra outlay, but they're doing themselves and other wagon enthusiasts a service. According to BMW M CEO Frank van Meel, the wagon is outselling the sedan, and that may be good news for those hankering after an M3 with a long roof. Although the G81 M3 isn't available in the U.S., a BMW executive told BMW Blog earlier this year that the G99's success could lead to the M3 wagon being sold in America. Sylvia Neubauer, VP of Customer, Brand, Sales at BMW M, told the publication that 'it's just too late for the current model of the M3 Touring,' but hinted that enough vocalized demand could change that. 'Please tell them [prospective M3 Touring buyers] to go for the M5 Touring. And tell the dealers next time when we ask the question that they say, 'Thumbs up, we want an M3 Touring.'' Mercedes-AMG's Most Hated Engine Is Being Replaced
In a recent interview, Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Shiebe admitted that converting fans of the brand's old V8 to the newer four-cylinder plug-in hybrid in the C63 has been a challenge. Prior to that, he said some customers have been lost in the midst of the brand's downsizing exercise. No intention to formally discontinue the four-pot engine was proposed, but that now seems to be happening, with a senior insider confirming that this unloved powertrain will be phased out in favor of larger inline-six and V8 mills. "Technically, the four-cylinder is one of the most advanced drivetrains available in a production car," said the source who spoke to Autocar. "It's also right up there on performance. But despite this, it failed to resonate with our traditional customers. We've recognized that." Mercedes would not necessarily have to develop a new engine from scratch for smaller AMG models. In the E53 AMG, for instance, the company uses a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged hybrid that produces 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. It's not a direct BMW M5 rival, but it's not far off in terms of performance, either. This engine in a smaller AMG model could make for a special performance car. More exciting is the possibility of a new flat-plane crank V8, not dissimilar from the one in the GT Black Series. Whatever replaces the four-cylinder unit, it's sure to mark a return to the emotional character that has defined AMG models for so long. The current C63 S E Performance is a heck of a performer, boasting 671 hp and 752 lb-ft, but the previous V8-powered C63 set a high bar that it hasn't been able to surpass, no matter how quick it is. The GLC 63 S E Performance shares the C63's 671-hp four-cylinder plug-in hybrid, so is also in line to get either a bigger six- or eight-cylinder engine in the years ahead. A notch below these full-fat AMG models are the AMG SL 43 Roadster and C43 sedan, both of which use a 416-hp version of the M139 four-cylinder engine. In a car of the SL's caliber and price, the use of a four-cylinder has been especially contentious, so we expect these models to ditch the 2.0L engine for a larger Six. Other than its more ordinary soundtrack, there's another reason to phase out the M139: It won't be easy or cost-effective to get it to comply with new Euro 7 emissions regulations. "There's no doubt about its potential - this is one of the most sophisticated engines we've ever built - but the investment to make it EU7-compliant is very high," said the insider. Related: 2025 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance First Drive: Overkill through complexity Markus Schäfer, Mercedes CTO, said at the same event that EVs and hybrid gas engines will continue being developed in tandem, and that the new V8 "will support upcoming emissions regulations." Both six- and eight-cylinder engines will use either 48V or full hybrid systems. Ultimately, Merc's four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain looks like it will only last for a single generation, although a specific timeline wasn't given. Over time, it may come to be regarded as a rare misstep in AMG's legacy. That's only if you're a cylinder snob like most enthusiasts, of course; the current C63 and GLC 63 are brilliant performance vehicles in many respects. But their incredible technical achievements came at the expense of the emotional qualities of their predecessors. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Judy Garland's Death And Ted Bundy's Last-Meal
Do you love all things weird, dark, and creepy? Subscribe to the That Got Dark newsletter to get your weekly dopamine fix of the macabre! It's a scary good time you won't want to miss. Welcome to That Got Dark! I'm Crystal, and I have a habit of going down deep and dark rabbit holes, which maybe isn't recommended for a good night's sleep, but hey, I just can't help myself! Here's the thing: I love to share all the terrible, weird, and scary things I discover. So, every week, I'll gather the darkest and creepiest things I find on the internet (and beyond) to share just with you, my spooky-loving friend. So, tuck yourself in tight and get out that flashlight…it's about to get dark. So, here's something I wish I had never learned — a teenage TikToker in Florida, known for his "high-speed" driving videos, recklessly killed six innocent people while driving 151 mph. What's even worse is the fact that he was sentenced to only 12.5 years in prison, just two years for each death. Noah Galle, who was 17 years old at the time of the crash, was driving a BMW M5 when he violently crashed into the back of an SUV carrying six farm workers. The impact forced the back of their vehicle forward several feet into the passenger compartment, killing everyone in the SUV. Galle was known on TikTok for regularly speeding and asking his followers to guess how fast he was driving. In January 2025, Galle entered a plea deal to avoid his case going to trial and received a reduced sentence of 12 years and 180 days in prison. Occasionally, I like to ask the BuzzFeed Community to tell me about the most mysterious, cult-like, bad-vibes towns in the United States they've ever been to. And you'd be shocked at how many responses I get each time (or maybe not). This week's spotlight: Island Pond, Vermont. 'My family and I visited friends there a few years ago. The town was very quiet and empty, which always creeps me out, but it wasn't that bad until we decided to go into a cafe that, I guess, was run by the same people as the Yellow Deli (which is run by the Twelve Tribes cult). The interior did not look like a cafe. It was an empty tarp-covered room, and they just had bread for sale, which the people I was with actually bought. I was so freaked out and thought they were going to get poisoned. Only one guy was working there, and he was creepy as hell and kept telling us to go to the Yellow Deli in Plymouth."—cwthree Wikipedia is like the Wild West. It's vast, lawless, and sometimes you can find some extremely weird (and horrifying) things out there. This week's spotlight: a medieval 'punishment' device called a scold's bridle. Used almost exclusively on women, this terrible mechanism was essentially an iron muzzle that went into your mouth and pressed down on your tongue, sometimes with a SPIKE, to prevent the wearer from talking. It was used to punish women whose speech or behavior was considered 'too offensive' or 'unruly' and was designed to inflict extreme pain and humiliation. You know, I would say it's hard to believe this thing was real, but then, humans (*cough cough* men) have been making diabolical devices for thousands of years, so… Judy Garland — Died: June 22, 1969, Cause of Death: Barbiturate overdose How she died: The iconic singer and movie star, who was just 47 years old at the time of her death, was found dead in her London townhouse by her fifth husband, Mickey Deans. Garland had a long history of substance abuse and struggled with addiction for much of her life, which was compounded by the pressures of fame, financial and career issues, as well as mental health challenges. Her death was ultimately ruled accidental. Companion (2025) What it's about: A weekend getaway at a remote cabin turns chaotic when one of the guests goes you should watch it: If you're in the mood for a less traditionally 'scary' horror film, Companion errs more on the side of sci-fi thriller bordering dark comedy. A good date night movie for those with a dark you can watch it: Streaming for free on Max or for rent for $5.99 on Fandango at Home. Ted Bundy Often remembered for the widespread media coverage of his trial and the self-proclaimed admiration of many women, Ted Bundy was a serial killer who kidnapped, raped, and murdered at least 30 young women and girls in the '70s. However, many believe there may have been over 100 victims. After several years in prison, Bundy was executed by electric chair in January 1989. His last meal: Bundy declined to choose, so he was given the standard last meal provided at Florida State Prison: Steak cooked medium-rare, eggs over easy, hash browns, toast with butter and jelly, milk, and juice. Well, it's another dark AF week in the books. In the next issue, I'll talk about a man who died from eating a hot fishcake (seriously!), a missing person Wikipedia page that will haunt you, and an impressive body horror film from Norway. Until then, stay safe, keep the lights on, and I'll see you for another horrifying trip down the rabbit hole… Thirsty for more? Subscribe to the That Got Dark newsletter to get a weekly post just like this delivered directly to your inbox. It's a scary good time you won't want to miss.

Next Audi RS 6 will have electrified powertrains only
Both hybrid and electric performance A6s are being readied for 2026, the former based on a V8 engine. Camera mirrors may be an option for next RS 6. Whatever the choice, all RS 6s will be electrified for the fifth generation of the go-hard large family Audi. And the electric variant will be the first full EV for Audi Sport. A competitor to BMW M5 and i5 M60, the new RS 6 will be the most powerful version yet, as you'd expect with an additional power source on board. It is likely to produce up to 544kW in combustion-engined form. And it will also come in both saloon and wagon versions, something not offered by Audi in 15 years. A couple of years back, Audi Sport was intending to take the RS 6 fully electric. But sluggish EV sales have convinced it to extend the life cycles of key ICE models to the middle of the 2030s. The electric RS 6 e-tron will use Volkswagen Group's new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) underpinnings. But the hybrid example will run on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. In other words, an update of the MLB mechanicals it already uses. Power galore Expect the 4.0 twinturbo V8 petrol engine to be carryover. To meet Euro 7 emissions legislation, it combines with a plug-in hybrid system that has a motor mounted in the gearbox. A similar powertrain is used in Porsche's Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. There, it is good for 575kW and 1000Nm, sufficient for a sub 3.0sec sprint time. Audi will likely be chasing similar spirited performance. The electric RS 6 e-tron will run a dual-motor, four-wheel drive powertrain similar to that in the S6 e-tron, only with greater output. Expect around 500kW and 950Nm. It should almost give the RS e-tron GT a run for its money. Audi is expected to give the RS 6 e-tron similar paddle and sonic treatment to the Ioniq 5 N, for greater driver engagement. The engineers are also working on a 'progressive torque curve'. The EV will use the same 95kWh (usable) battery as the A6 e-tron but it won't have as much range, around 640km. Styling will involve the usual amped up aggressive appearance compared with their more mainstream stablemates. Cue wider wheel arches, a bigger diffuser and spoiler, and a lower, wider stance. Read our review of the S5 Avant here. The PHEV will feature bigger air intakes and central tailpipes. Both models will be 4900mm long. Expect the PHEV to be around 2090kg, and the RS 6 e-tron to weigh in excess of 2500kg. Audi Sport will likely employ a new active suspension system similar to that used on the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. Brakes will likely be carbon ceramic units with 10-pot front calipers.
