City sees spike in gastro cases amid monsoon onset
Kolkata: An outbreak of viral fever and gastrointestinal diseases, with symptoms of stomach upset often worsening into diarrhoea, has struck Kolkata over the last week, within days of the Covid outbreak fading. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Cases of severe diarrhoea, typhoid, and shigella have also been reported across private hospitals. The number of patients suffering from stomach infection-related fever has gone up by 10%-15% in the last four days, according to some city clinics and hospitals. "The symptoms range from mild stomach discomfort to severe gastroenteritis with high fever persisting for three-four days. We have been receiving five-six patients with stomach-related ailments daily on average since last week. These include senior citizens, some of whom suffered severe electrolyte imbalance due to fluid loss triggered by diarrhoea. We admitted a few since it's necessary to monitor the electrolyte level and ensure the right fluid replenishment under supervision," said Charnock Hospital emergency head Nishant Agarwal. "We received around five patients with hepatitis A in the last week. Typhoid and gastrointestinal diseases rise around the onset of monsoon, often due to consumption of contaminated water. That apart, cases of severe diarrhoea have been on the rise. This will continue till the rain turns more consistent," said Sayan Chakrabarty, infectious diseases physician, Manipal Hospitals. "We are seeing a variety of gastrointestinal infections, ranging from viral gastroenteritis to bacterial infections like E. coli and salmonella that cause diarrhoea, fever, and stomach pain. Common symptoms include nausea, watery or bloody diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, fever, and dehydration," said Shiv Ratan Pathak, consultant gastroenterologist, BP Poddar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Last week, we had six admissions. Drinking safe water and good hygiene are essential," said Supriyo Chakrabarty, group adviser, BP Poddar. "We detected several diarrhoea and typhoid cases, some very severe, over the last few days. Several pathogenic strains of E-coli have also been detected along with a few shigella cases. We also found campylobacter jejuni and vibrio cholerae in multiple cases with gastrointestinal symptoms," said Peerless Hospital microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri. Techno DAMA Hospital has treated five to six young adults and kids with diarrhoea, fever, bloating, and stom-ach cramps. E. coli, rotavirus, amoebiasis, and a few salmonella and Shigella cases have been detected along with a few cases of typhoid. "We mostly treat by using ORS. Zinc supplementation can also help reduce the duration and severity of episodes. In bacterial infections, antibiotics may be prescribed," said MS Purkait, medical superintendent, Techno India DAMA Hospital.

Season-change viruses on the rise even as Covid cases decline
Kolkata: While Covid is on the verge of making a complete exit, other season-change viruses have started filling the void. The Covid outbreak had kept them in check over the last three weeks. Cases of rhinovirus , metapneumovirus, and influenza A and B , as well as streptococcus pneumonia, are already on the rise, while a couple of cases of swine flu, too, have been reported. "As Covid cases started sliding, we started receiving influenza, parainfluenza, metapneumovirus, and rhinovirus, though they are still few in number. With the temperature sliding suddenly with the onset of the monsoon, there could now be a spurt. The other viruses are making a comeback," said Peerless Hospital chief microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Choudhury. "Like during the pandemic, this outbreak, too, saw Covid ruling out other infections. This happens during any outbreak, be it influenza or adenovirus. When one virus dominates, others tend to recede. It was no different this time, though Covid numbers have gone down sharply. In another two to three days, we would be back to where we were three months ago," said CMRI Hospital pulmonology director Raja Dhar. "Influenza A and B, rhinovirus, and human metapneumoviruses are crawling back. We are witnessing exacerbations of asthma and COPD due to viruses. Several had to be admitted with fever, cough, and breathlessness," said Charnock Hospital pulmonologist Soumya Sengupta. At a Jodhpur Park hospital, an eight-year-old child has been admitted with a simultaneous infection of streptococcus pneumonia, influenza A and B, and H1N1 or swine flu. Seasonal viruses are highly contagious, so an outbreak is difficult to prevent in the pre-winter period, said Manipal Hospital infectious diseases physician Sayan Chakrabarty. "Over the past few days, we are observing a noticeable surge in viral respiratory infections , many resembling illnesses caused by pathogens like Influenza A/B, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and seasonal adenoviruses. Patients typically have fever, sore throat, dry cough, and fatigue," said Abhijit Aich Bhaumik, senior consultant physician, BP Poddar.

Covid symptoms in this round feel like Omicron during pandemic, say doctors
Kolkata: Around 30% of Covid patients in some Kolkata hospitals are showing gastrointestinal symptoms, which were prevalent during the spread of the Omicron variant in early 2022. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Many elderly patients admitted during the current cycle suffered a quick worsening of comorbidities, which may have been triggered by the virus, say doctors. There has also been a spurt in the number of relatively younger patients without any co-ailment. Even though severe cases remain low, several private hospitals have seen a spurt in admissions, leading to an extension of their isolation wards. While initial symptoms of the current surge were restricted to fever and cough, a sizeable section of patients has now started suffering from loose motion and mild diarrhoea — a prominent symptom of the third Covid wave that struck three-and-a-half years ago. "While these symptoms, too, remain mild, it now indicates the presence of the virus if detected in conjunction with fever and cough. Many had gastrointestinal symptoms during the Omicron wave, and it could be possible that since the current strain Jn.1 is believed to be an Omicron variant, symptoms are getting repeated," said CMRI Hospital pulmonology director Raja Dhar. The hospital has seven Covid patients admitted. While most are still elderly with comorbidities, a significant number suffered worsening of their ailments quickly, added Dhar. Charnock Hospital has admitted four Covid patients over the last three days. "They had a persistent fever and nasal symptoms that made them get tested. Their comorbidities are mild, and they are stable. There has been a major spurt in mild positive cases, which don't require admission. Patients now cut across all age groups and are not necessarily just the elderly with comorbidities," said Charnock Hospital pulmonologist Soumya Sengupta. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur now has two Covid patients. "While we received elderly patients till a few days ago, the virus is now affecting all age groups. A vast majority have mild symptoms that don't require admission, which has kept it manageable for us so far," said Manipal infectious diseases physician Sayan Chakrabarty. Peerless Hospital has four Covid patients admitted, including a seven-month-old girl and her mother. It also has a 52-year-old man and a 72-year-old elderly patient, both of whom are stable. With two Covid patients currently admitted, BP Poddar Hospital has intensified safety measures. "Both presented with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) and mild-grade fever. One is a 72-year-old female and the other a 65-year-old male," said Supriyo Chakraborty, group advisor of BP Poddar.
