MACC sorry over Beng Hock's death

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has apologised to the family of Teoh Beng Hock and is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the family. Its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that the MACC has acknowledged the findings from various investigations carried out over the past 16 years regarding the death of Beng Hock, who was last seen entering the Selangor MACC office in Shah Alam. These include the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) in 2011, the Court of Appeal's decision in 2014 and the most recent investigation by the police, which was classified as No Further Action ( A) by the Attorney General's Chambers, Azam said. 'Although the latest investigation did not uncover sufficient evidence to charge any individual under the law, the MACC views with utmost seriousness the fact that the late Teoh Beng Hock was found deceased in the MACC Selangor premises on July 16 2009,' Azam said in a statement. 'This tragic incident has had a profound impact not only on the deceased's family but also on all MACC personnel and the nation as a whole. 'Nevertheless, as a gesture of compassion, the MACC is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the late Teoh's family for the purpose of supporting the welfare and educational needs of his child,' he said. He added that reforms have been implemented to protect the welfare of individuals who are being investigated by the MACC. These include using Video Interviewing Rooms (VIR) to record statements, upgrading and adding CCTV systems with added emphasis on strategic placement and the use of Body Worn Cameras (BWC) during questioning. 'In light of this, I, as the Chief Commissioner of the MACC, wish to express my deepest sympathies and extend an apology to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock for the pain and suffering they have endured over the years.' In a response later in the day, Beng Hock's sister Lee Lan said that the family viewed the apology as a farce because no action has been taken on the officers who were allegedly involved. 'The family feels slighted over the insincerity of the apology by the MACC. They said that they are apologising because they see our pain but they are not surrendering the five officers that we believed were involved. 'This apology is not sincere because there was no further action taken against them. Their offer to donate is also a shameful one to us because we do not want money, we want the truth,' she said in press conference. 'Who killed Beng Hock and who will be held responsible?' Beng Hock was found dead on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, the morning after he was questioned overnight at the Selangor MACC's office which was on the 14th floor of the same building. A 2014 Court of Appeal verdict ruled that Beng Hock's death was the results of actions of 'one or more unknown persons'.

This Legendary Cricketer Was Almost Switched At Birth After Bath, Today He Turned 76

Last Updated: Happy Birthday Sunil Gavaskar: The Little Master was almost switched during birth. Gavaskar recounted the incident and revealed he was sleeping blissfully in fisherwoman's crib. Sunil Gavaskar turned 76 on Thursday. Born on July 10, 1949, Gavaskar propelled Indian cricket to new heights. He braved the tall, lethal bowling attacks of the world without wearing a helmet or breaking a sweat. He batted long sessions and piled on huge scores. The OG Little Master may have bid goodbye to the 22 yards in 1987, but he is still very much in and around the cricket grounds, performing commentating duties and sharing all the precious insights of the game. One fascinating insight that Sunny Paaji shared off the cricket ground was when he was almost switched at birth. Yes, you read that right. Appearing on an episode of Breakfast With Champions hosted by Gaurav Kapur, Gavaskar shared an anecdote about his birth that could have had a major impact on the landscape of cricket in India. Recounting the incident, the Test legend revealed that he was born with a birthmark near his ear on July 10. His uncle, who had visited him earlier, knew of it. However, in a later visit, the uncle had a horrific realisation when he saw the baby in Gavaskar's crib did not have the unique birthmark. Spooked, he searched around frantically before finally finding the little master. Gavaskar was blissfully snoozing in a fisherwoman's crib. Gavaskar relived the life-altering moment in his autobiography titled 'Sunny Days". 'I may never have become a cricketer and this book would certainly not have been written, if an eagle-eyed relation, Narayan Masurekar, had not come into my life the day I was born," he wrote. 'It seems that Nan-Kaka (as I called him), who had come to see me in hospital on my first day in this world, noticed a little hole near the top of my left earlobe," he added. 'The next day he came again and picked up the baby lying on the crib next to my mother. To his utter horror, he discovered that the baby did not have the hole on the left earlobe. A frantic search of all the cribs in the hospital followed, and I was eventually located sleeping blissfully beside a fisherwoman, totally oblivious of the commotion I had caused! The mix-up, it appears, followed after the babies had been given their baths," he concluded. Appearing on BWC, Gavaskar revisited the incident. Kapur gifted him the register entry of his birth. (Breakfast With Champions) You can watch it here: On 7th March 1987, Gavaskar entered the history books when he became the first batter of the beautiful sport to notch up 10,000 Test runs. He concluded his glorious 16-year career with 10,122 runs that consisted 34 centuries. His 34 centuries were the highest for any batter before cricket great Sachin Tendulkar broke the record in 2005. Gavaskar averaged 51.12. In his fascinating career, Gavaskar once received a haircut from umpire Dickie Bird while the match was on! Annoyed by his hair blocking his sight during a windy day at Old Trafford in 1974, Gavaskar asked Bird to cut his hair strands using the scissors the latter had to cut the threads on the ball. 10,000 new body cameras to enhance police surveillance

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are looking to expand the use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) in a two-pronged initiative, beginning with the procurement of 10,000 more units. At present, 7,648 BWCs have already been deployed. The second step in the expansion plan is the purchase of 17,648 SIM cards for all the devices that will be in use to enable real-time monitoring of police operations. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said to expand the implementation of the BWC initiative, police had submitted a proposal under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to procure another 10,000 BWC units. "The SIM cards will also be integrated with the BWC devices, allowing for 'live-stream' monitoring of assignments in the field," he told the New Straits Times. Razarudin added that the move was in line with the force's commitment to increase transparency, integrity and public confidence in the effectiveness of policing in the digital era. He said the use of BWC had so far proven to be a highly effective in enhancing integrity and accountability of the force. "These devices continuously record all activities during assignments, thus enabling every action taken by police in the field to be monitored more transparently and objectively. "BWC recordings serve as crucial evidence in evaluating any complaints or allegations of misconduct. "In cases of procedural violations, the footage can be used as the basis for internal investigations, disciplinary actions or legal proceedings." Before the use of BWCs, Razarudin said, there were no live recordings to support or refute claims. Their presence had reduced opportunities for manipulation and improved public confidence in police professionalism, he added. He said BWCs encouraged self-regulation among policemen and compliance with the standard operating procedure (SOP). "Overall, the implementation of BWCs is part of Bukit Aman's efforts to enhance transparency, reduce misconduct and strengthen public trust in the police. "The full BWC implementation is being carried out in phases based on officer deployment, logistical capacity and the alignment of supporting infrastructure, such as docking station systems and data storage." Razarudin said the initiative was in the strengthening phase, with full usage depending on logistical readiness and field training. He said BWCs were primarily used by patrol vehicle and motorcycle patrol units, traffic police and crime prevention patrols. "They are also used by personnel stationed at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman and other operational units that interact with the public." Razarudin said these units were selected based on operational needs and their level of exposure to high-risk situations to ensure the safety of personnel and the public. He said all video recordings were stored according to police SOP. "However, the SOP is classified under the Official Secrets Act and serve as an internal reference for the police. "Any request for a copy or the contents of the SOP is subject to procedures outlined under the Official Secrets Act and must be made through official application channels." Razarudin added that all BWC footage was stored for one month and would be reviewed if an issue or complaint were to arise. "Recordings deemed important for investigations or as evidence will be retained for a longer period, in line with established needs and guidelines. "The footage will also be reviewed if it is required as evidence in investigations, prosecutions or disciplinary proceedings." Previously, Razarudin had told the NST that policemen wearing BWCs must comply with the SOP and were not allowed to switch the devices off while on duty. The footage is stored via a docking station, which functions as a central data hub and automatically transfers all recordings captured during a policeman's shift. The station also charges the devices to ensure they are ready for the next deployment. Razarudin also said the procurement of additional devices would depend on funding approval and the force's strategic priorities. Last August, Razarudin had said all policemen on field assignments would be required to wear BWCs by year end.

China developing deadly Marine Toxins, may be merging AI with bioweapons: U.S. Report

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Two Chinese nationals have been arrested in the United States for allegedly attempting to smuggle a highly dangerous fungus into the country, which the FBI says could be used as an agroterrorism incident adds to growing concerns over China's alleged bioweapons to a 2025 U.S. State Department report, China may be incorporating artificial intelligence into its biological weapons (BW) program. The report, released in April, warns that China could be leveraging publicly available AI and machine learning tools to enhance bioweapon development."China probably is unable to make complex scientific equipment without Western innovation. It probably is capable of using publicly available artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) tools to advance efforts related to BW applications," the report a signatory to the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), China is prohibited under international law from developing bioweapons. However, the report stops short of confirming current BW activity, while noting China's historical possession of such weapons and the lack of evidence showing their report also alleges that China has failed to disclose two historical BW facilities in Beijing and Lingbao. These sites were reportedly involved in the development of military-grade biological agents including anthrax, cholera, plague, tularemia, ricin, and botulinum toxins.'Historical information suggests that China's BW production occurred at two facilities, in Beijing and Lingbao, prior to China signing the BWC in 1972. Although China has submitted BWC CBMs each year since 1989, China's CBM reporting has never identified these facilities or otherwise disclosed it ever pursued an offensive BW program,' the report particular concern is China's ongoing research into potent marine toxins—naturally occurring compounds from marine organisms with possible bioweapons applications. The State Department believes China still depends on Western innovation to manufacture the specialized equipment required for large-scale bioweapon integration of AI into such programs, the report warns, could have devastating global consequences. It draws parallels to the COVID-19 pandemic, which many believe may have originated from a lab leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology—a facility known for its gain-of-function research aimed at increasing virus transmissibility. The report suggests that similar research, when combined with advanced AI, could result in a future catastrophe of even greater magnitude.
