Armaan Malik: I need a departure from my good boy image
Singer Armaan Malik is feeling "rebellious". 'I've always believed you must be on your best behavior because you're a public figure. I am 90% a good boy, but I think that I've tapped into that little edgy vibey side of mine for my latest song. That's also a side of mine, but people don't get to see it. I need a departure from my good boy image. I have matured so much in the last few years. I just want to dabble into something different and show a different side of mine,' says the singer. His latest track, Baari Baari , marks that shift—one he describes as 'a very fresh Armaan Malik.' He adds, 'We were done with this song in just two hours.' For the 28-year-old singer, the track isn't just about sonic experimentation. It's also a statement. 'I've always done things which are off the beaten path. I've never been in this one box that people like to put me in. Everyone loves to put you in a box. I just want to break open that box,' he says. Known primarily for his romantic ballads, Armaan acknowledges how his success has also boxed him in creatively. 'I haven't offered much of my artistic side to my fans and my listeners at large. I feel what happened to me is that because of the whole playback singing situation and because I sang so many romantic songs, everyone thought he sang only romantic songs. But that's unfortunately not in our control, because if one song becomes a hit, everyone comes to you for that vibe again,' he reflects. 'But for us as an artist, it's our responsibility to show that different side to the listeners or the public at large. If an artist doesn't push himself beyond his own capacity, he won't break new ground. You become very monotonous and redundant as an artist if you are just in that one space. And unfortunately, in India, for the longest time, playback singers have always been this. Now since the last five to eight years, you've seen this emergence of indie pop," he explains. As for what drives him now, the singer is clear: 'It's that time or that era in my life where I'm like, to hell with everyone and what they think. I just want to try something cool for myself because I have already done all those things. I've done the romantic hits. I have all those songs and those are songs for posterity. Now it's about writing a new chapter, writing a new independent music legacy which I think is a challenge and exciting at the same time. '

Armaan Malik on audience judging Indian singers doing English songs: In our country, we think lesser of our own artistes
The recent collaboration between singer Ed Sheeran and Arijit Singh on Sapphire became an instant hit, with praise being showered on Ed's attempt at Hindi lyrics. While he is happy about the collaboration, singer Armaan Malik states that when the reverse happens, the Indian audience is a bit judgemental. Armaan Malik(Photo: Instagram) 'Indian audience has this preconceived notion that Indian artistes don't sing English well. However, there are so many of us who sing English beautifully, sometimes even better than some of the English artistes. But we just have this feeling in our country where we think of our own people lesser,' says the singer who recently released his song Baari Baari, adding, 'Our biggest drawback is that our Indian audience loves to bring our own people down. I don't know why it is, but it is inherently in our nature.' But Armaan Malik feels things are heading towards a better situation. 'I can see a change now with a lot of people championing Indian artistes because a lot of international artistes are collaborating with Indian artistes. So, suddenly it's cool to support Indian artistes,' he says. While the singer believes it's a great time to be an Indian artiste with so many global collaborations and acceptance happening, he also takes credit for being one of the firsts to do that. 'I did it at a time when no one else was doing it. I kind of opened that portal, which I am very happy I did. In 2020, when pandemic hit and I'd released my debut English single Control, that was the starting point for people viewing an Indian singer differently. I was not then looked at just a playback singer,' he insists. Armaan asserts that it took him a while to venture into English music because he didn't have anyone to look up to doing the same growing up. 'I remember I had this conversation with my father at the age of 14 that I wanted to be an English pop singer, and he was like 'ye kahaan se aaya?' He gave me a great advice, and told me to focus on Hindi music and Bollywood for now, make the following, build yourself as an artiste, become big, then do it. I think that was the greatest advice I ever got. I built my whole career first in my home country, in my home language, and then took the decision to do English pop music. I dreamt of doing this at 14, but I had to wait 10 years to put out my first English song. When I was 14, if someone else was already doing it, I wouldn't had to wait that long. So, when I did it, a lot of kids came up and say thank you as it gave them confidence,' he says, adding, 'The next big global song has got to come from India, and it will happen in the next two to three years.'
