Coconut milk trader, 64, charged with raping 18-year-old sister-in-law in Bachok
KOTA BHARU, July 27 — A 64-year-old man, who has two wives, was charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping his 18-year-old sister-in-law in January. According to the New Sunday Times (NST), the accused, whose name was not revealed, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. The charge stated that the man was accused of raping his sister-in-law in a room at a residence in Kubang Golok, Bachok, at around 3pm on January 18. He faced charges under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and whipping upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ahmad Nurie Ab Rahman. NST reported that Siti Hajar opposed bail, citing the close family ties between the victim and the accused, as both families live together. However, Ahmad Nurie requested bail on the grounds that his client, a coconut milk trader, is the sole breadwinner and has two wives to support. The court eventually granted bail of RM12,000 with one surety, and set August 25 as the next hearing date.

20-year-old claims trial to raping younger sister over 2 years
The lawyer for the accused said his client is a first-time offender who got married just three months ago, and that his wife is in the early stages of pregnancy. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : A 20-year-old in Kelantan was charged in the Kota Bharu sessions court today with raping his younger sister on three occasions over two years. The accused, who works at a food outlet, claimed trial after the charges were read before judge Zulkifli Abllah, Sinar Harian reported. He was accused of raping his sister when she was 11 at a house in Bachok in April 2023, and again in December 2024 and April this year. The charges were framed under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for between eight and 30 years in prison and at least 10 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Firdaus Zainal Abidin. The victim, now 13, is currently in the care of the welfare department. Firdaus had appealed for the accused to be allowed bail, saying he was a first-time offender and that the first offence allegedly occurred when he was 17. 'He got married just three months ago and his wife is in the early stages of pregnancy. His father and wife are both here today, ready to act as sureties and to ensure that he doesn't bother the victim,' he said. The lawyer added that the accused would be moving to Kuala Lumpur with his wife for work. Faiz objected to the bail application but asked the court to impose an amount of RM15,000 if it decided to allow the accused bail. 'The rapes allegedly occurred when the victim was 11, 12 and 13. These are three serious accusations against her own brother. And the court is well aware of the seriousness of these cases in Kelantan. 'The victim is traumatised and receiving treatment after confirmation that she's experiencing psychological stress from the incidents,' he said. The judge fixed bail at RM30,000 for all three charges and set Aug 6 for case mention. The accused did not post bail.

PAS leader dismisses talk of Abdul Hadi stepping down, say president's health ‘better than before'
MARANG, July 5 – Those close to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang have denied claims he plans to step down from his post amid his health woes, saying such speculation has only come from outside the party. Utusan Malaysia cited Bachok MP Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman, who previously served as Abdul Hadi's political secretary, saying the rumours had surfaced ahead of the party's 71st Muktamar or annual congress in September but were unfounded. 'We haven't heard anything about it internally. It's just talk from outsiders,' he was quoted saying. 'Even the deputy president has addressed this. Those of us close to him, even his family, have heard nothing,' he added, referring to Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man. Tuan Ibrahim had recently said he feels Abdul Hadi should remain in the role, rather than being moved to be the spiritual leader. Mohd Syahir added that Abdul Hadi's health had significantly improved following a medical procedure at the National Heart Institute last week, and that his recovery has been swift. He said the doctors treating Abdul Hadi were also satisfied with his progress and that he is expected to attend more public events in person moving forward. 'Tok Guru's health is very good, even better than before. He's already resumed his lectures and attended meetings, so there's nothing preventing him from joining more physical events,' he said, referring to Abdul Hadi. Following the lecture, Abdul Hadi's aides requested that media personnel give the PAS president space and refrain from seeking comments from him. Abdul Hadi resumed delivering his weekly duha lecture on Friday, which he had paused for over a month due to treatment at IJN on June 17. He has conducted the session weekly for decades, with the last held on May 30 before his recent break. Despite still recovering, Abdul Hadi also attended funeral prayers on Monday for the late Hamzah Ngah, former PAS Kuala Terengganu deputy chief, at Masjid Rusila in Terengganu.

We made wrong call on 2022 election date, says Umno's Ahmad Maslan
Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan striking a gong to open the delegates meeting of the Bachok Umno division today. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno's lacklustre performance in the 2022 general election was partly down to calling for the nationwide polls at the wrong time, according to a party leader. Umno Supreme Council member Ahmad Maslan said although the party then suffered its heaviest election loss, it has not lost its fangs and remains politically relevant, citing Umno's success in winning multiple by-elections since the unity government was formed. 'It's not that Umno isn't strong as some say, but we placed the wrong bet in terms of choosing the date for GE15. We were still in power at the time, and the then prime minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob was from Umno. 'However, because we chose the wrong date, we suffered our heaviest election loss ever,' he said at the Bachok Umno division's delegates meeting. Umno won only 26 parliamentary seats in 2022, a sharp drop from its high-point of 102 seats in 2004. 'However, since then, by winning the by-elections in Nenggiri, Pelangai, Tioman, Ayer Kuning and Mahkota, we have shown that we are still formidable,' he said according to Harian Metro. Ahmad, who is deputy works minister, urged Umno's election machinery and members to take encouragement from the by-election results as they prepare for the next general election. He added that Umno must carry out several measures in order to ensure victory, including holding frequent grassroots activities on the ground and ensuring unity at the machinery level. The 2022 general election was called by Ismail, then an Umno vice-president, who announced Parliament's dissolution on Oct 10 that year, well ahead of its expiry in July 2023. Umno had been pushing for a snap election to be held by the end of 2022, but Ismail denied that the dissolution was due to Umno pressure. He said it was because his government could no longer function well, as the 12 Perikatan Nasional ministers in his Cabinet were being pressured by their 'boss'. The general election was held in November 2022, resulting in a hung Parliament, when no party won enough seats for a parliamentary majority. Pakatan Harapan won 81 seats, Perikatan Nasional 74 and the Umno-led Barisan Nasional 30. A coalition government was then formed by PH, BN, East Malaysian parties, and independents, who command a total of 153 seats, well over the 122 needed for a majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
