I'm a Frequent Flier, and These Are the 8 Packing Mistakes Wasting Space in Your Carry-on
I come from a family of avid travelers. My mom has been traveling for more than 40 years and has racked up at least 2,000 hotel stays, and my dad takes an average of four work trips a year to Europe. I've been taking regular trips—both domestic and international—for more than 20 years, and I never check my bags. Needless to say, I've become a pro at packing a carry-on. Whether it's for a weekend getaway or weeklong trip, I strictly travel with carry-on luggage to keep my belongings close and to avoid a checked-bag fee. So I've had a lot of practice, and there are eight mistakes I see many travelers make that lead to overstuffing their bags. Below, I've broken down what you should pack instead to avoid those mistakes, and to become a pro carry-on-only traveler, and you can find everything in Amazon's travel store for as little as $9. Before discovering these packing cubes, I would just roll my clothes into my carry-on. It helped save some space, but I also had to unpack my bag just to find a belt or vitamins. With compression packing cubes, you can organize your bag by outfit or article of clothing. Bagail's packing cube set comes with four different-sized bags that, when zipped, condense everything down to a more compact size. Save additional space by creating a capsule wardrobe of a few bottoms and tops that can be mixed and matched to create different travel outfits. Wrinkle release spray is my secret weapon for keeping vacation outfits looking smooth and fresh without a lot of work. Portable steamers and irons are bulky and require an outlet, time, and patience. Downy's wrinkle spray works in a matter of seconds: Just lay your clothing flat, spritz it with wrinkle release spray, and use your hands to smooth the material out. That way, you can spend less time on your clothes and more time exploring. A hanging toiletry bag, like this one from Bagsmart, won't require digging around to find your makeup and skincare products. Instead, the built-in hanger can be placed on a hook or over the door to help you get to your products easily. Plus, the clear pockets put your toiletries on display, so all you have to do is glance, grab, and apply. Hotels provide a mix of toiletries, like shampoo and conditioner, that'll help you conserve bag space. So, I only bring a small hair oil, like this shopper-loved formula by Verb. Not only does it help reduce frizz, but it protects my strands from heat, and I find it makes my hair softer and shinier. Storage space is limited in a carry-on, but that doesn't mean you can't still pack hair accessories. Hot tools are big and bulky, and most hotels provide some sort of blow dryer. These Luckybear hair rods can give you curls or a fresh blowout look overnight; Just roll your hair before bed and use the built-in clips to keep it in place. Packable rain jackets make it easy to bring an extra layer without taking up a lot of space in your bag. This style from Outdoor Ventures is water- and wind-proof to keep you dry and warm during rainy days. The jacket can fold down into a packable size you can store in your carry-on and still have space for a pair of shoes. When you pack pill bottles separately, they take up space, and you have to spend time digging around your carry-on to find each one. Pill organizers are small enough to fit in a personal item bag and keep all of your vitamins and medicine in one convenient spot. Betife's travel-friendly design has seven compartments to separate what you need by day of the week or type of pill, and it has side locks to keep everything secure. I used to throw my necklaces into a side mesh pocket inside my carry-on, but it always left my jewelry all knotted up. Fed up with wasting time unknotting necklaces, I started using a travel jewelry case, and it completely transformed my unpacking experience. This Bagsmart travel jewelry bag has a fabric that's flexible enough to bend and fold into your luggage. It also has a button closure to keep everything extra secure. My jewelry is now organized into separate pockets and hooks, which makes it easier to locate what piece I want to wear when I'm ready to go out. Love a great deal? I'm a Flight Attendant, and These 12 Life-changing Products Are My Secret to Being a Better Packer—From $6
Amazon Prime Day really is Christmas in July. As a flight attendant of 10 years, I use Prime Week as a chance to refresh the items that live in my carry-on (and work overtime when I'm on the clock). For the casual traveler, it's a great time to look ahead and grab essentials like a new vacation outfit or leakproof TSA-compliant bottles for your next trip. Below, I've found 12 fantastic pieces of gear and accessories that have been total game-changers for me this summer, and they will upgrade the way you travel for the rest of the season by making you a sharper packer. There are also a few Amazon Prime Day deals that I've been eyeing, like the all-in-one Eeeza 5-piece Luggage Set that will help me tailor my packing depending on my trip. Don't wait until right before your next trip to update your luggage, especially since this five-piece set is on sale right now. My trips are mostly a day or two, but sometimes they can spread out to a week-plus, and I love having several travel bag options. Here, the tote included is the perfect carry-on or personal item bag with its expansion zipper, so if you shop a little extra on your trip, you've got plenty of room to pack your treasures to come home. Compression cubes are the real travel game changers, and this Bagail set includes everything I need: a shoe bag, a laundry bag, and multiple sizes of compression cubes. It even has a small zipper bag and a cosmetics case. If you haven't used packing cubes before, this is your nudge to start. I find that not only is everything more organized when I use them, but I can fit more items into smaller luggage. If you're more of a minimalist packer (like me) and larger totes aren't your bag , you might want to try this awesome crossbody sling backpack, on sale for $24. I love the two external mesh pockets for small water bottles, lip balm, and other tiny things you'll need as soon as you're seated. The zippered compartments provide spots for valuables while keeping you organized, and it hangs close to your body to keep everything close by and secure. Dressing appropriately for your adventures should be a top priority, which is why I gravitate towards matching sets; they're instant outfits that take the guesswork out of packing. When I'm shopping for travel sets, I look for a relaxed fit, pockets, and of course, stylish details that will make the pieces mesh well with my wardrobe. This Anrabess set, in particular, is appealing as the pants have elastic around the ankle to keep them off the floor of the airplane bathroom. The top, on the other hand, adds fun flair to my suitcase with its knit texture and posh front pocket-cap sleeve duo. Comfort is key for me while traveling, and I love this neutral sneaker by New Balance that ties together your travel outfits without sacrificing arch support (resulting in fewer shoes packed in my suitcase since these do it all). The mesh upper part of the shoe allows for comfort when feet inevitably swell on longer trips. What's more, this style slips on and off easily, helping you move quickly through TSA security lines. I won't even consider packing without toiletry bags and compression cubes to keep me organized. Mumi has this three-piece set in several trim colors that's perfect for any traveler. These clear bags make it easy to spot everything from your daily medications to your tweezers. I actually use each bag for a different task: hair products in one, face routine in another, and odds and ends in the smallest. So, when it's shower time, just grab the shower bag and go; it's got everything I need. Also on sale are these Vera Bradley rip-resistant travel pouches, which are up to 53 percent off and offer even more organizational bliss when you're traveling. Not everything hair and skin-related comes in convenient TSA-approved sizes, so this travel bottle set solves the problem for me. I'm grateful for the snap top closures, which give me peace of mind that everything in the bottles is secure at just a glance. Labels are included in the set, so there's no mixing up products. After 10 years as a flight attendant, I've found that I never regret being extra cautious with my bags. I have two of these small, cable luggage locks in my carry-on at all times; sometimes, the flight crew has to stow our luggage away from our jumpseats, so I slap one of these locks through the zipper pulls to make sure nothing goes on vacation with someone else. Outside of work, the Forge locks come in handy for lockers at the pool or the gym on layovers. The constant changes in charging ports are enough to drive a person crazy, which is why I always have one of these multi-charging cables in my bag just in case I leave my primary cords in a hotel or someone needs help charging their device. It comes in two different lengths, but I always recommend getting the longest cord available (5 feet long) to ensure that it works with your space. I was recently on a 1,800-mile road trip with family, and every day, I found myself on the sunnier and warmer side of the car. I was really missing my little Jisulife rechargeable fan, which is on sale for Prime Day. For faster cooling on the go, I recommend the foldable fan version; the kickstand is great for tray tables or for hanging it in the seat back organizers. I love the 13-hour battery life and that it's just a little bigger than my phone. It doesn't take up much space and ensures I'm the most comfortable person in the cabin. It seems inevitable that when traveling, we put our hands in something sticky or need a quick refresh. Witch hazel has been around forever and is gentle enough for anyone to use, and these travel-friendly pads work great to clean up makeup smudges, treat scratches or bug bites, and double as a face wash if you're saving toiletry bag space. A wrap or scarf is a must-have item on my leisure trips. Whether by plane, train, or car, temperatures are rarely comfortable for everyone, and I love having a lightweight wrap to snuggle with. This Amazon-favorite scarf can act as an outfit saver if I spill a little something, and it mixes well with almost every shirt and bottom combo I have packed. Love a great deal? I'm a Travel Writer, and I Have These 8 Amazon Finds to Thank for Easy Packing and Long Flights—From $8
As a travel writer, I get to share my more than 20 years of experience exploring the world, and the products that have made my trips easier. Out of the thousands of travel essentials out there, only some have stood out to me so far this year—and they're all available at Amazon. I've decided to stop gatekeeping my favorite travel finds from this year that have made packing easier and long flights comfy. That includes everything from a handy portable luggage scale to a supportive neck pillow, and it can all be found at Amazon's travel store for as little as $10. Best 2025 Travel Essentials at Amazon Jisulife Handheld Mini Fan Amazon This portable mini fan is always with me during the summer (even when I'm not traveling). It's slim and compact enough to slip into a purse, fanny pack, or backpack. When I'm overheating on a train with weak air conditioning, I just unfold it and choose one of the two speeds to quickly cool down. Travel Inspira Portable Luggage Scale Amazon There are few things more anxiety-inducing than getting to the airport and finding out my luggage is overweight, but this mini luggage scale has completely eliminated that issue. It has a digital display screen that'll instantly show how much a suitcase weighs, so I can check before I even get to the airport. And, the packable size means I can take it with me to check my suitcase's weight when it's time to fly home. Bagail Compression Packing Cubes 4-pack Amazon Packing cubes are great for organizing your suitcase, but when you combine that with the magic of compression, you can also save some luggage space. This set of four will condense clothing and keep everything tidy, whether you sort your clothes by article or by outfit. The set has become a shopper favorite, with more than 9,000 purchased in the last month. Cabeau Travel Neck Pillow Amazon Sleeping comfortably on a plane is nearly impossible, which is why investing in a supportive neck pillow is crucial. Cabeau's pillow attaches to your seat to keep you from slouching or dropping your head forward. The front strap also lets you adjust the tightness so you can feel fully supported around your neck and chin. Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Carry-on Luggage Amazon Travelpro's carry-on is flight attendant-approved—and we can see why. It has four 360-degree spinning wheels that make it easy to move through the airport and other spaces. It also has a spacious interior that's expandable, so overpackers can easily fit an extra outfit or two inside. Basic Concepts Airplane Foot Hammock Amazon As a 5-foot traveler, it's rare that a seat is short enough for my feet to touch the ground, but that's what makes this foot hammock so handy. By attaching it to the seat in front of you, it becomes a foot rest and extra leg support. Plus, the memory foam material makes it extra cozy. Aphuwj Magnetic Portable Charger Amazon This portable charger is worth the investment, because it magnetically attaches to the back of your iPhone, so you can use it without a wire getting in the way. You don't ever have to rely on charging cables to juice up your phone and other devices. Lisen Airplane Phone Holder Amazon This genius phone holder will save you from neck aches. You can attach it to the airplane seat in front of you and watch videos or read ebooks without having to bend your neck for the entire flight. Love a great deal? I've Been a Travel Editor for 10+ Years, and These 12 Overrated Products Are Wasting Space in Your Suitcase
You could fill an entire checked suitcase with overly hyped-up travel products. But after spending more than 10 years as a travel writer, I've found even the most popular gear can sometimes fall short. So, how do you tell an overrated travel product from a truly useful one? The best travel essentials maximize space and solve multiple packing problems. When in doubt, remember: less is more. A few of these picks might ruffle some feathers. Good packing is subjective, and what's worth it to you might not be for another traveler. Maybe you absolutely need that travel pillow to be able to sleep on a long-haul flight. But if it's space you want (hello, carry-on-only travelers!), this travel pro has you covered. Here are 12 overrated travel products you should drop—and what to pack instead. Sure, over-ear headphones look cool. But they're bulky, take up valuable space, and aren't great for side sleepers trying to nap on planes. The AirPods Pro 2 deliver excellent noise cancellation in a compact, palm-sized package that fits easily in your carry-on or pocket. They pair seamlessly via Bluetooth. Packing cubes are all the rage for organizing clothes, but they often add volume and weight without saving space. I pack about the same with standard cubes as without. Instead, invest in compression packing cubes like Bagail's, which actually reduce bulk by flattening clothes, making it easier to fit more in your suitcase, especially paired with a roomy, well-designed bag. Unless you need serious neck support, skip the bulky travel pillow. They take up a lot of room, and you only really use them twice per trip. Airlines often provide basic pillows anyway. I prefer wearing a cozy sweater on the plane and folding it for support. But if you simply must have a pillow, try The Tube. The stuffable pouch can hold up to three days' worth of clothes and packs down small when not in use. Duffels are cumbersome and offer little organization. A structured weekender like the Béis Weekender Bag stands upright, has multiple compartments including a shoe section, and keeps gear tidy and accessible. The Etronik Weekender offers similar features, along with a USB charger at a fraction of the cost. Organization helps maximize packing efficiency and saves time searching for items on the go. Travel bottles often claim to be leak-proof but rarely deliver. I learned this the hard way when my last bag flooded. Cadence Capsules changed the way I travel with more ease and less stress. They're sturdy, truly leak-proof, and magnetic for neat stacking while keeping your bag organized. The modular design helps you customize the size for everything from shampoo to sunscreen, making packing a satisfying game of Tetris. Backpacks are roomy but can make maneuvering in crowded spaces awkward while making you an easy target for pickpockets. After friends had their backpacks robbed twice while traveling, I switched to a smaller crossbody. The Baggalini Anti-theft Sling Bag is slash-resistant, RFID-blocking, and has locking zippers. Swing it to your front to keep an eye on your valuables. Inflatable footrests look fun but are bulky and tricky to inflate mid-flight, and are banned by some airlines. Instead, consider a compact lumbar support pillow like Tempur-Pedic's. It fits in your carry-on, supports your back, and takes up far less space. I love Birkenstocks, but if space is tight, I opt for versatile white sneakers like Adidas Sambas or Veja V-12s. They go with sundresses, athleisure, and casual looks, while protecting your feet during city walks. Add foldable ballet flats for dressier occasions. They pack small and polish off any outfit. Bright statement dresses are often one-note, hard to style multiple ways, and take up precious packing space. Neutral matching sets like this Sampeel duo can be mixed and matched with separates for several looks with less bulk. Simply dress the pieces up by pairing the top with a skirt, or the bottoms with a flowy blouse and fun jewelry. Water bottles are a travel must-have, but many popular stainless steel ones are heavy and awkwardly sized. The Larq water bottle is lightweight, insulated, and self-cleaning with a built-in UV-C light—no more musty smells or bacteria buildup. It fits well in cup holders and has a handy clip, making hydration effortless on the go. Travel hair dryers—even foldable ones—take up space and often perform worse than your at-home model. Voltage differences abroad can also fry them. Most hotels provide dryers anyway. Instead, save time and space while protecting your hair from heat damage with heatless curlers like Kitsch's Satin Curlers. Simply put them in overnight and wake up to blowout-esque waves. Towels are bulky and are usually provided at hotels and pools anyway. If you're camping or hitting the beach, opt for a quick-dry microfiber towel like Rainleaf's. It's super compact, soft, and fast-drying. Many travelers also love Turkish towels, too. They roll up small and double as stylish wraps or scarves. Love a great deal? Travel on a budget this spring with these 18 under-$50 essentials
Whether you're looking to relax at the beach, explore a new city or spend time hiking in nature, spring break is a great time to travel — and it doesn't have to break the bank. We spoke with numerous travel experts to find budget-friendly products that will help you make the most of your trip. From space saving travel gear like compression packing cubes to cool tech gadgets that will make your vacation extra fun, we rounded up the best spring travel essentials under $50. Bagail Compression Packing Cubes Sophie Anderson, founder of The Wanderful Me, enthusiastically recommended compression packing cubes. They're her 'secret weapon' for maximizing space and packing a range of outfits in her luggage. This half-mesh option from Bagail is lightweight, breathable and comes in many sizes — perfect for a suitcase or carry-on. Bay Laurel Turkish Towel With numerous colorful options and a convenient storage bag, this Turkish towel also comes highly recommended by Anderson. She likes that it's 'lightweight, easy to pack and usually dries within 30 minutes.' T&I Home 100% Cotton Turkish Towel Shelbi Okumura, travel photographer, creator and founder of Bucketlist Bums is also a fan of Turkish towels. She recommends this 100% cotton version that comes in three color options. 'I always like to travel with my own beach towel, and Turkish towels are lightweight, compact and very affordable,' she said. Aluan Handheld Mini Portable Fan Courtney Jackson, founder and travel advisor at Wishful Escapes, recommended this handheld mini fan particularly for those visiting a warm climate. 'A portable fan allows you to stay cool while enjoying the sun,' she said. It's rechargeable via USB and has two fan speeds to choose from. Veger Portable Charger 'Never worry about your battery going dead and missing all the moments of vacation. With this charger, no extra cords are required,' Jackson said. This slim charger has three types of cables built-in to, making it extra convenient for travel. Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch If you're planning on spending some time in the water, Jackson suggests bringing this waterproof phone pouch to keep your device dry. I used a phone pouch last time I was at the beach, and it allowed me to take photos free from worry about water damage. Suokeni Water Shoes 'Anytime I visit a tropical destination, I always bring a pair of Suokeni water shoes so I can explore the coastline without scraping at my feet,' Michelle Steinhardt, founder of The Trav Nav, said. 'These quick-drying slip on water shoes help me feel more comfortable wading into the ocean when the rocky shore can be challenging to navigate.' Epicka Universal Travel Adapter Anderson said this travel adapter is 'a must if [you're] heading anywhere that doesn't have US outlets.' With four different plugs, a USB-C port and four USB-A ports, you can charge up to six devices at the same time. WunderLeelyShop Cotton Tote Bag Anderson recommended picking up a local tote bag or a cute cotton tote like this one from Etsy. Totes are 'handy for carrying all [your] beach essentials, like a towel, water bottle, book, Kindle and sunscreen,' she said. The added zipper, pocket for your water bottle and spacious design ensure you won't drop anything on your way to the beach. East Water Straw Sun Visor 'This straw visor is very chic, comfortable and affordable,' Okumura said. 'It'll keep you protected from the sun during spring break without breaking the bank.' The hook-and-loop design makes it a comfortable fit, and the breathable material is perfect for warm-weather destinations. Plus, it's foldable, so it can easily fit in your luggage. Yamiu Travel Shoe Bags Shoe bags are a travel must-have, according to Steinhardt. 'They protect my shoes, keep them separate from my clean clothes, provide extra space for additional items like socks and can double as a dirty laundry bag,' she said. Plus, they come in different sizes so you can pack flats, heels or boots. Sun Bum SPF 50 Sunscreen 'We should all do our part to be more responsible travelers. That's why I always pack reef-safe sunscreen,' Anderson said. At 3 ounces, this Sun Bum sunscreen is travel-friendly and suitable for a carry-on bag. Plus, it's dermatologist-approved and even has vitamin E. Nuun Sport Electrolyte Tablets For those who plan on hiking during their spring break, Steinhardt recommends these electrolyte tablets. 'On long hikes, I take Nuun Sport Electrolyte Tablets with me for an extra energy boost and to stay hydrated,' she our review Yaktrax Pro Traction Cleats 'In the spring, when the snow begins to melt, hiking trails become more accessible. I use Yaktrax, which are like chains for your feet, to help me navigate steep trails and prevent me from slipping and sliding down the mountain,' Steinhardt said. 'Even on short snow-covered paths with little incline, Yaktrax provide enhanced grip and stability.'Bombas Men's Friday Slides 'These ultra-light waterproof slides are great for spring break destinations,' Okumura said. 'You don't need to worry about water from the pool or ocean damaging your shoes.' Bombas Women's Friday Slides With good traction and comfortable support for all-day wear, these slides are perfect for any water adventures this spring break. Not to mention, they look sleek and come in a range of tasteful hues. Jasonwell Giant Inflatable Pool Float Jackson recommends an inflatable pool float to amp up the poolside fun. This one comes in three whimsical options: Pegasus, flamingo and golden swan. And because they deflate completely, the floats are surprisingly packable. Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 50 Sunscreen Steinhardt always applies Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 50 Sunscreen before heading out for the day, whether she's skiing, hiking or relaxing on a beautiful beach. 'I find that the Neutrogena Clear Face Sunscreen helps keep my skin protected from the sun without causing breakouts.' The following FAQs have been answered by travel experts Sophie Anderson, Courtney Jackson and Shelbi Okumura. Which spring break essentials for under $50 can you fit in a carry-on? Which spring break essentials for under $50 can you fit in a carry-on? Though some of the spring break essentials you decide to pack will depend on the destination, Jackson recommended packing a toiletry kit, reusable water bottle, foldable beach bag and sunscreen. Anderson said if she's heading somewhere warm for spring break, her go-to travel essential is a Turkish towel. 'They're lightweight, easy to pack (they roll up tightly), sand doesn't stick to them like regular towels and they often dry within 30 minutes,' she said. She's taken one with her all over the world, including the desert in Arizona and the beaches of Thailand and Greece. She also loves that it can be used as a blanket for the chilly airplane ride. Okumura also recommends packing a Turkish towel in your carry-on, along with swimsuits, a pair of waterproof slides, a book and a cute visor if you're traveling to a beach destination. What spring break essentials under $50 should you invest in for an international trip? What spring break essentials under $50 should you invest in for an international trip? For an international trip, Jackson recommended investing in a universal plug adapter and compression socks. Okumura also recommended bringing a passport holder with RFID blocking technology, since it's 'a great minimal investment for any international travel.' Additionally, Anderson emphasized the importance of compression packing cubes. She said these are her 'secret weapon for keeping [her] bag organized and packing plenty of outfits for a 7-10 day international trip — all in just a carry-on bag.' What spring break destinations are the most affordable? What spring break destinations are the most affordable? For an affordable spring break, Jackson recommended booking a cruise or an all-inclusive resort. 'Both options offer great value, but all-inclusive vacations tend to stretch your dollar even further,' she said. 'With meals, drinks, entertainment and activities already included in the price, you can avoid the surprise expenses that often come with traditional travel. Many resorts also feature complimentary kids' and teens' clubs, water parks, nightly entertainment and non-motorized water sports — making them perfect for families or groups looking for fun without constantly pulling out their wallets.' If you're looking for an affordable international destination, both Okumura and Anderson recommend visiting Mexico. 'Mexico City, Sayulita and Todos Santos are particularly great destinations that are generally pretty affordable,' Okumura said. If you're after a more under-the-radar destination, Anderson likes Bacalar, Mexico for the beautiful Bacalar Lagoon, aka the Lagoon of Seven Colors, and for its affordable accommodation, food and activities. 'For those wanting to experience Mexico but itching to go off the beaten path, Bacalar is perfect. It's just a four-hour bus ride or drive from Cancun Airport,' she said. Apart from Mexico, Okumura also recommended visiting Belize since 'it offers a bit of everything — beautiful islands, pristine diving and ancient ruins to explore.' If you're planning a longer spring break of at least 10 days, Okumura suggested Thailand. 'Thailand is a very affordable destination with an amazing selection of beach destinations (Krabi, Railay, Koh Samui and Phuket can all be reached by plane),' she said.
