This Sonoma County Lakeside Property Will Live as a Brewery Again
is the associate editor for the Northern California and Pacific Northwest region writing about restaurant and bar trends, coffee and cafes, and pop-ups. A local beer garden is giving a defunct Sonoma County brewery space a new lease on life. The team at Brewsters Beer Garden is nearing completion on their new Waterhawk Lake Club, remodeling the former Bear Republic Brewing Co. location in Rohnert Park. This restaurant is a separate project from the original sprawling Petaluma restaurant. Co-owner Mike Goebel told Sonoma Magazine the vibe will be similar, though, with lots of outdoor seating and approachable food. An Instagram post on Sunday, July 13, from Brewsters showcased a bit of the new restaurant. The huge space, which sits next to Roberts Lake, has sat vacant for two years. In April 2025, the Press Democrat reported Brewsters had taken the lease. The Bear Republic location shut down after local player Drake's Brewing Co. acquired the business and moved operations to San Leandro. A final opening date for Waterhawk Lake Club is still TBD. SF's carb party is back for a third year The outstanding Pizza, Bagel, & Beer Festival hits North Beach Saturday, August 16 from noon to 4 p.m. The neighborhood party brings 65 local pizzerias, bagelries, and breweries together for a day of indulgence. There's the Ooni Pizza Championship competition, a full beer garden, DJ sets. General admission tickets start at $90, and there are absolutely pricier versions with more bells and whistles (and bagels). New specialty cafe hits Japantown Best Boy Electric, a new coffee shop, just popped up in an area not known for its swanky pour-over coffee services. The large-ish space on Post Street serves standard coffee drinks and, of course, It Girl-once-again matcha. There are also a number of pastries on hand, including doughnuts. The business is open every day of the week, with Monday through Friday service 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Restaurant raffle and tasting event is on The Golden Gate Restaurant Association's first-ever Taste Summer SF launches today, July 14, and runs through Sunday, August 31. Participants in the event can dine at or visit any seven San Francisco restaurants or farmers markets to be entered in a raffle to win one of three staycation packages. Tribals are ‘biggest Hindus', says Chhattisgarh Chief Minister; Baghel rebuts claims
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and his predecessor and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel have joined the debate over whether members of tribal communities were practising Hindus. While Mr. Sai, speaking at a religious event on Sunday (April 20, 2025), asserted that tribals were the biggest Hindus, Mr. Bagel, rebutting the claim, said the Chief Minister should read the Constitution. Speaking at the Dharma Raksha Mahayagya and Sanatan Sanskriti Sammelan in Raipur, the Chief Minister said that in the tribal areas of the State, there was a culture of worshiping symbols in the form of Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati. '...We the adivasis are the biggest Hindus who not from today but since ancient times are worshipping [symbols] in the form of Mahadev and Parvati. In the Gond [a tribe]-majority areas, they call [them] Gauri-Gaura, they are also Shiva-Parvati,' he said. Responding to the statement, Mr. Bagel said that the Constitution granted a special status to the tribals because of which they get the benefit of reservation [in public institutions and political representation]. 'Vishnu Deo Saiji is busy calling the tribals Hindus, he should read the Constitution. The tribals have been given a separate status in the Constitution, if that status is abolished then the reservation of the tribals will end. So first decide this, read the Constitution first and then give a statement,' he told presspersons on Monday. He added that if the tribal community starts writing Hindu then they would stop getting reservation. As per the 2011 census, the share of tribals in Chhatisgarh's population was 30.62% with the population concentrated in Sarguja and Bastar regions of North and South Chhattisgarh respectively.

Look: Cat, sheep win 'Couple of the Year' award at Ukraine zoo
Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The Odessa Zoo in Ukraine announced an unusual duo won its annual "Couple of the Year" contest: a cat and a sheep. The zoo said on social media that Masazhik the cat and Bagel the lamb were chosen as this year's Couple of the Year, beating several same-species pairs including lemurs, tigers and porcupines. The finalists were revealed in a YouTube video earlier in the week, and the winning pair were unveiled Thursday on Facebook. Masazhik, whose name translates to "massage therapist," can often be seen perched on Bagel's back. The duo will be officially presented with their Couple of the Year title at a public ceremony on Valentine's Day. The Couple of the Year award is an annual tradition at the zoo. Last year's winners were a pair of mated sheep.
