Man goes missing after causing car crash that turns his girlfriend paraplegic and burdened with massive medical bill
A Chinese woman was left paralysed after a car crash caused by her boyfriend. Now, the boyfriend has gone missing. The accident happened while 25-year-old Bai was travelling with Zhang's family in Gansu province on April 5. Zhang was driving when he got distracted during a turn. The car hit a truck head-on and another car behind it. Police said Zhang was mainly at fault for driving into the wrong lane. Zhang and his family had only minor injuries. However, Bai suffered serious spinal damage and multiple fractures. Bai is now paraplegic. The couple had planned to get engaged and marry in 2026. At first, Zhang promised to marry her and care for her. He and his family visited her in the hospital and said they would support her. Zhang told her, 'We will get married after you recover.' But, just three months later, Zhang left her. His actions shocked social media, with many calling it heartless and cruel. At first, Zhang and his family helped. When Bai was moved to a rehab hospital, they disappeared. They stopped visiting, stopped talking and gave no more money. 'I asked his mother on WeChat if I could see him. At that time, I had suddenly become paraplegic and was abandoned. I completely broke down,' the South China Morning Post quoted Bai as saying. Bai is now fully dependent on others. She suffers from nerve pain and cannot care for herself. Her first treatment cost around 300,000 yuan (nearly ₹ 36 lakh). Zhang's family gave only one-third. She still needs more surgeries, costing another 300,000 to 400,000 yuan. Her savings are gone. Her parents are poor farmers and cannot help much. Bai is thinking of taking legal action. She says she cannot stop her treatment to wait for the court case. She wants Zhang's side to pay for her medical needs now as she continues to struggle both physically and emotionally. 'The only thing I can do now is demand that the other party pay the medical expenses in advance,' she said. Lawyer Zhang Yonghui said Zhang must pay compensation as he was mainly responsible for the car accident. Even if he disappears, Bai can still take legal action and investigate his assets. Bai's situation has moved many online. One person said he should face criminal charges. Another quoted an old saying: 'When trouble comes, even close ones run away.' 'Let him bear the criminal responsibility,' SCMP quoted a social media user as commenting. 'The old Chinese saying holds true: 'Husband and wife are like birds in the same forest; when disaster strikes, they fly their separate ways',' posted another.

Photo: Douyin Tragedy struck when Zhang reportedly became distracted while making a right turn, causing his car to swerve into the oncoming lane and collide head-on with a truck. His car also hit a smaller vehicle behind the truck. Justifiable Defense: The First Frost star Bai Jingting returns in new Chinese crime drama
The First Frost star Bai Jingting is back - and this time, he's trading charm for chaos. Known and adored as the swoon-worthy Sang Yan, Bai is making a dramatic return to the screen in Justifiable Defense, a gritty legal thriller that plunges deep into moral grey zones and courtroom battles. Gone is the light-hearted romance of The First Frost; in its place is a shadowy world of past traumas, shocking truths, and justice that comes at a price. It's a stark transformation, but Bai proves once again that he's not just a fan favorite - he's a powerhouse. Bai Jingting's new Chinese drama Justifiable Defense: What is it about? Justifiable Defense explores Article 20 of China's Criminal Law and opens with Duan Hongshan (Zhang Luyi), a veteran prosecutor, investigating a controversial case. Housewife Jiang Ting (Ye Qing) has killed her abusive husband, claiming it was an act of self-defense. As the case gains media attention and public scrutiny, Hongshan teams up with rising prosecutor Fang Lingyuan (Gao Ye) to uncover the full story. Their investigation leads them to a connected case from 14 years ago - a campus incident of excessive self-defense involving Li Mufeng (Bai Jingting), a student who was imprisoned after killing a school bully to protect senior Mei Zheng (Zhang Bojia). The threads between Jiang Ting's present-day trial and Mufeng's past conviction start to intertwine in surprising ways, forcing the prosecutors to reconsider what justice really means. As layers of the past resurface, Justifiable Defense challenges the law's rigidity, asking whether moral righteousness can override legal boundaries. When and where can fans watch Justifiable Defense in India? The drama premiered on July 9, 2025, and concluded with its finale on July 15, 2025. With just 15 tightly packed episodes, the series is now available for streaming on iQIYI in India and globally. Bai Jingting's fans can expect a performance that's subtle, intense, and unlike anything he's done before. To stay updated on the stories that are going viral follow Indiatimes Trending.

19-year-old admits to crypto scam to steal $32,000
A teenager who conspired with an online acquaintance to rob a man using a fake cryptocurrency deal as bait pleaded guilty to attempted robbery with hurt on Wednesday (July 9). Bai Chunjie, 19, plotted to lure a victim into bringing $32,000 in cash to a meeting under the pretext of purchasing Tether, a type of cryptocurrency. The scam was aborted after Bai spotted a police car in the area and backed out, but his accomplices went ahead with the attempted robbery. Shin Min Daily News had earlier reported that last September, Mr Zheng, 20, brought cash to Hougang Green Shopping Mall for a crypto transaction, but was attacked by several men who tried to snatch his wallet. He managed to escape and later called the police. The suspects include Benedict Yee Hong Fai, 30, Mohamad Ihan (transliterated), 21, and Syazafirul (transliterated), 19. Bai will be sentenced at a later date. Schemed hatched over Telegram According to court documents, Bai met Yee on Telegram through a mutual friend. The two hatched a plan to rob a buyer by pretending to sell him cryptocurrency. Bai later connected with Mr Zheng via a cryptocurrency trading group and offered to sell him $30,000 worth of Tether. The pair eventually agreed to meet at Hougang Green Shopping Mall at about 6pm on August 29 last year. On the day of the meeting, Bai and Yee roped in Mohamed and Syazafirul to confront the victim, telling them only that the victim had "done something wrong" and needed to be "taught a lesson". They were not told of the robbery plan. When Bai saw a police car in the area, he backed out and said he no longer wished to be involved. He later observed the meeting from a nearby bus stop. According to court documents, Mr Zheng was assaulted by Mohamed and Syazafirul. Syazafirul punched him and tackled him to the ground, while Ihan held onto his legs. Yee then tried to grab the victim's sling bag, which contained $32,000 in cash. Mr Zheng managed to struggle free and fled the scene in a private-hire car. If convicted, Bai may face a jail term of between five and 20 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

PLA naval fleet continues to attract large crowds Naval officers greeted the crowds with singing. Photo: RTHK Thousands of people on Saturday visited the PLA naval fleet on the third day of its five-day port visit to Hong Kong. Tickets to tour the Shandong aircraft carrier and two other naval vessels had been snapped up within minutes of their release earlier this week. Large queues formed ahead of the day's first session which began at 10 am. 'I am thrilled to board the ships because I know the tickets are incredibly hard to get. I left home at 5 am. It's not exhausting at all. I'm too excited," said a woman who had travelled from Macau. A man surnamed Hui and his wife brought their daughter along with them to visit the Shandong aircraft carrier. 'It's incredible that this is China's first domestically-built aircraft carrier. It's my first time boarding a navy ship and it's a meaningful family activity to foster national awareness and education for our daughter,' he said. Crowds were invited to board the ships in batches according to their arrival time. During the tours, people were free to take pictures with the aircraft on deck and talk to naval officers. A man surnamed Bai said he was impressed by the advanced weaponry and the warmth of the crew. A naval officer from Guangdong was on hand to help with translation into Cantonese. 'This is my first time visiting Hong Kong. I find it a beautiful and prosperous city. The crowds are passionate and curious. They are often asking about the models and functions of our equipment,' he said. Two more sessions are set for this afternoon with another open day on Sunday before the fleet departs the SAR on Monday.
