Freshman quarterback Evan McCalister is Valencia's latest ‘secret weapon'

Almost every summer, Valencia High football coach Larry Muir tries to make it a mystery as to which of his newcomers projects as a top player. He likes to keep it a secret until after the summer competition is finished. Well, Valencia is headed on its two-week dead period next week, so Muir couldn't hide his thrill watching freshman quarterback Evan McCalister unleash a long pass on the final play Saturday in the Simi Valley passing tournament. The ball was caught in the end zone for a dramatic touchdown by sophomore Michael Wilder as Valencia players roared in delight with a victory over Sierra Canyon to complete a 5-1 afternoon. The 6-foot-2 McCalister, 14, has been getting playing time behind returnee Brady Bretthauer since graduating from middle school. There's little doubt he has the arm and mental make-up to become Muir's latest summer sensation, joining the likes of Steven Manfro and Brian Bonner, who were both young, unknown players before using the summer to take off at the running back position. McCalister moved from Texas and is the younger brother of Denver Broncos defensive back Tanner McCalister. 'He's very talented,' Muir said. 'He sees the field really well. He plays beyond his years.' Saturday was the busiest day so far for summer football competitions. Burbank won the Simi Valley championship by beating the host Pioneers in the final of the Platinum Division. The Bulldogs also had wins over Valencia and Sierra Canyon. Junior quarterback Deshawn Laporte led Burbank on offense. Mission Viejo won its own tournament championship by beating Mater Dei in the final. San Clemente went unbeaten to win the eight-team St. John Bosco tournament. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated Inglewood in the championship of the Baldwin Park tournament.

Baldwin Park Police Department According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, when officers found the suspect, he "immediately" opened fire on them. Two officers were shot during the incident, as well as the suspect. The officers and the suspect were taken to the hospital, where Riveros was later pronounced dead. A man was also found dead at the home with multiple gunshot wounds. The man was identified as 43-year-old Darius Wong, a Hacienda Heights man and father of two. Federal agents capture alien accused of rape, assault while LA politicians condemn ICE operations

Amid fiery anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, federal agents in Baldwin Park, California, on Wednesday arrested an illegal Mexican national wanted for rape and other violent crimes. In an exclusive video shared with Fox News, Arturo Terron-Quevedo could be seen being handcuffed near what appears to be the City Hall building. A senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official told Fox an ICE Los Angeles officer and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) criminal investigator made the arrest after Terron-Quevedo was released from local custody. He has pending charges for rape, assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury, and inflicting corporal injury, an ICE spokesperson confirmed. The arrest comes hours after Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, along with 30 other city officials, held a press conference on Wednesday and claimed ICE agents were unfairly targeting illegal immigrants who did not have criminal records. On Sunday, the City of Baldwin Park and Baldwin Park Police Department released a statement noting the entities have "a long history of supporting its immigrant community, regardless of immigrants' legal status." "As Mayor, I speak and advocate for all members of our community, including our undocumented immigrant residents," Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila wrote in the statement. "The City firmly supports your membership in our community. I recognize that for many this is a scary time, and I hope you know that the City of Baldwin Park and Baldwin Park Police Department support the wellbeing of all our residents." The Baldwin Park Police Department issued a separate statement reiterating it does not participate in the enforcement of civil immigration laws. "Our Baldwin Park police officers are not involved with immigration enforcement activities, and in no way are we participating in their federal actions," Police Chief Robert Lopez wrote in a statement. "The men and women of Baldwin Park Police Department are committed to ensuring that our city continues to be a place where people feel respected, supported, and safe." Lopez added a request for citizens not to "assault law enforcement, commit vandalism or otherwise engage in illegal behavior against any law enforcement."

Baldwin Park shooting suspect makes first court appearance, ordered jailed without bail

The 22-year-old man accused of shooting and killing a Baldwin Park police officer, and another man, made his first court appearance on Wednesday and was ordered to remain jailed without bail until his July 31 arraignment. Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, who was injured in a gun battle with police during the May 31 incident, appeared at the Pomona Courthouse for his hearing in a wheelchair. He faces two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of 35-year-old Officer Samuel Riveros and 43-year-old Darius Wong, a Hacienda Heights man and father of two. He also is charged with two counts of attempted murder for allegedly firing at two other Baldwin Park police officers, one who was wounded by gunfire. Wong was shot and killed as he was attempting to park his car on the street after dropping off his daughters, wife, and sister-in-law at a Baldwin Park family party Saturday evening. Minutes later, just after 7:12 p.m., police responded to reports of a man armed with a rifle, shooting on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. Sheriff Robert Luna said earlier that as two police officers arrived, they found a man lying on the sidewalk "unresponsive, that ultimately, unfortunately, was Mr. Wong." The two officers who arrived in separate cars, were "immediately fired upon by this suspect, who had a rifle" Luna said. "An officer-involved shooting occurred at that time and Officer (Anthony) Pimentel was injured as a result of the suspect's gunfire." Riveros, a nine-year department veteran, arrived shortly after and was struck by gunfire, Luna said. More officers responded to the scene and a second officer-involved shooting occurred with the suspect. Medina-Berumen suffered gunshot wounds and was treated in the hospital. An AR-15-style weapon with two high-capacity magazines was recovered at the scene, Luna said earlier. Medina-Berumen also faces a possession of an assault rifle charge. During Wednesday's brief court hearing, Deputy District Attorney Michael Michelena told Superior Court Judge Ramiro P. Cisneros that prosecutors can prove the defendant was standing outside his home with a short-barrel rifle and "started firing indiscriminately." Michelena said Wong was shot before officers arrived. Officers "took him (Medina-Berumen) into custody after he ran out of ammunition," the prosecutor said.
